Six months had passed since Naruto had been found by Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi in the forests outside of Konoha. It had taken a lot of time and patience, but his wounds had finally healed fully, leaving a few scars but nothing that caused a hindrance to the blond's movements. Now, he was back to full strength again, but even now, his boisterous personality had never fully recovered.
He'd become far more cautious, careful, moving with a newfound wariness for his surroundings that he'd never previously gained. He was much calmer, quieter, followed instructions with none of his usual complaining. He wasn't playful anymore, didn't joke around, poke fun at Sasuke's attitude or really even smile as much as he used to.
At the moment, he was sitting quietly in the mist of the early morning, settled by a small stretch of river. Naruto's current task was waiting patiently, a fishing pole to his right, catching fish was something that took patience that he never would have previously possessed. Yet now, there he sat, senses alert despite his eyes being closed, listening to the usual sounds of the forest and paying quiet attention to any movement within the water in case a fish decided to bite.

He was upset, very much upset, but there was nothing that could be done on his end to make this any better. It frustrated him.
How come the things he could do for Naruto always seemed so small? For once, it seemed like he could understand Sakura Haruno, at least a little bit. She had mentioned as such to him once as well. It seemed like a lot of people tended to feel that way when it came to Naruto.
But there was one thing he could do.
"...I will stay in the room for the duration of the procedure." Naruto might protest, but Gaara refused to back down on this. It wasn't that he distrusted his doctor's, but he wished to be by Naruto's side regardless.
Perhaps he was being selfish, but...
"...Hey, c'mon Gaara. Chin up a little, will ya? What's with the long face?"
Naruto tilted his head a little, reaching a soft hand out to take one of Gaara's own. He didn't like seeing someone he loved so upset and it bothered him greatly, especially when he was the cause of it.
"You can stay with me. I'd honestly rather have you here, I'm not exactly a fan of medical procedures in general anyway."
He could already tell that this wasn't going to go smoothly. A surgery might have been easy enough for a normal shinobi, but Naruto was not a normal shinobi. Gaara knew that better than anyone. He sincerely doubted anesthetics would work on Naruto in any capacity--and doing that sort of procedure while Naruto was awake--
Especially when he really didn't seem like he was comfortable with the attention or being touched at all--
"...Is there no other option?" He asked, not because he doubted the physician but because he wanted Naruto to see that he was trying to explore all other options before allowing something so invasive to take place.
"...It's okay, Gaara."
For the first time since this whole exam had started, Naruto spoke up. His voice was soft, but steady despite his current situation. After all, he'd survived on his own with these injuries for months, he could handle one more operation if that was what it took.
"If they said that's what needs to be done, then....Let 'em get it done. I've survived worse than that, I can handle it. I'll be alright."
The physician was honestly a bit surprised, though slowly nodded and turned back to look at Gaara. "Surgery is our only option at this point. If we don't remove the infection now, it'll kill him."

It was one of those rare, quiet moments of rest that he'd finally managed to get. Just a few minutes to rest beneath a large tree without anything or anyone chasing him, his arms crossed over tucked knees. He even managed to close his eyes for a little while, listening to the quiet chorus of the forest birds and the wild creatures of the undergrowth.
Being a rogue ninja was not an easy lifestyle, constantly having to keep out of sight or only appearing in such quick flashes that most thought he was a wandering spirit. In fact, every village believed he had died several years ago, and those who saw him (or those he helped along his path) referred to Naruto as "the Ghost Of The Leaf Village". Whether to justify not trying to capture him or whether they actually believed he was no more than a spirit, he wasn't sure, but it was rather nice.
Despite his relaxed demeanor, Naruto sensed someone nearby, cracking one eye open in a lazy fashion even though they were not yet in view with a soft hum. From what he could tell, that energy signal wasn't any sort of threat...So he closed that eye again with a sigh and went back to resting for the time being.

He was trying to pretend there wasn't rage clawing through him and threatening to surface. Not at Naruto. Never at Naruto, not anymore, not for a long time. No, at the people who caused Naruto to flinch like that.
The desire to tear into flesh and hear screams and smell the blood was flashing behind his eyes. And yet, never once did his stoic expression break. He had gotten pretty good at the mask he wore now. Just because he still had those feelings didn't mean people needed to know about them.
"Can it be fixed...?" He asked the physician quietly. He needed to know that now. Could it be properly fixed or was it going to heal wrong even if it was healed? Would Naruto have long standing repercussions for this?
The physician gave a soft sigh, lowering their voice slightly. "His jaw is healing, but it isn't healing properly like it should. Broken bones are very painful, and while they take a while to heal, this break is taking much longer to heal than most should." he said after a few moments of thought. "It seems as though there's an infection within the bone, in order to allow it to heal properly he may need surgery to fix it, we would have to rebreak the bone within his jaw and remove the pieces that are infected. Otherwise, it will not heal properly, if at all and the infection could very well kill him."
Naruto listened in silence, shifting slightly once or twice but otherwise just staying still and quiet. Normally, he'd have been up in their space, curious about what they were talking about and being a little bit obnoxious, but now he was well-behaved and while he did tilt his head in their direction a little, he didn't move from his current spot.
