Our askbox is open for suggestions for the 2026 VaaZeLink Week prompt list! This year's event will also be the first week of November, so obviously it's a ways out and we won't have an announcement for a good long while.
Lord help me I'm back on my BOTW Zelda x MC Vaati transgender yuri bullshit again. I've literally never made any content of them but I have the vision so perfectly in my head. With Calamity Ganon sealed away and the Monarchy finally gone, they'd be free to just Be Wizards together. They have so much in common, they would understand each other, share magitech research, explore ruins, study magic artifacts and pour over tomes, brew potions, bond over having shitty leader fathers who tried to stop them from following their ambitions (and from being nonconforming), both having been 17 with far too much pain and weight on their shoulders, both being bound by magic constraints despite their powers (Vaati to the Minish Cap, Zelda to the Cycle), and no one else understanding what being sealed away for a century is like. It'd literally be SO PEAK but I've never had the spoons to actually sit down and write a fanfiction laying it all out.
Originally I was just doing a bunch of sketches to grt the hang of drawing them, but then I liked the vibe of this one a lot more. Not a fully realized piece but it still felt nice to do.
Have another vaazel idea in mind we shall see
def got his colors totally off in the last piece I did of him oops 😬
In this AU, Hyrule is a seaside nation undergoing an industrial age. While their technological advancements have resulted in faster production, military and trade superiority, and a rapid growth along the sealine, it has poisoned the sea and left them at odds with the rich population of mermaids and related creatures... and cut them off from the world of magic.
Magic that their new enemies still use in abundance.
Returning from a "diplomacy" mission from a nation across the sea, one of Hyrule's ships was attacked by a particularly strong band of mermaids...resulting in the princess becoming stranded on a nearby string of islands. Her search for shelter lands her at the site of an ancient sealed sorceror.
Vaati, having failed in his gambit to rule the seas ages ago, had been imprisoned, spared only due to his ability to grant wishes.. something Hyrule had deemed valuable.
As a member of the royal family, the princess has the ability to free him... on the condition she agree to a deal. Determined to hold out for rescue instead, she resolves to last as long as she can on the island without doing so.
Still, the old sorcerer's cave is decent shelter... and he could use the company.
Got a little too ambitious for my current skill set and the fact i only started this tonight haha...
Anyway in my heart of hearts the upper floors of the wind palace (not the parts you fight through) have very nice grounds. If not a bit of an ivy problem. Used this build from @hungry-froxidile as a reference!
Stayed up way too late getting this down, hoping to polish and cross post to AO3 later but fuck it we ball now.
(I am more or less mixing and matching game maps as I see fit. Have you SEEN the four swords one?)
[An Outing in Hebra]
“Lovely, isn’t it? You can see all of Hyrule from up here.”
Zelda pulled the collar of he scarf tighter. Yes, she could see it- not that the view was any better than the more temperate environment of the enchanted palace. That, at least, she could more easily compare to the maps.
“When I… said I wanted to visit the Hebra peak… I was hoping for fall weather.”
“Hah!” Vaati let out a hearty laugh, turning back from the ledge the princess was still far too cautious to approach. “Don’t tell me you’ve never seen the snowcapped mountains in october?”
“Neither have you.” The comment had earned the wind mage a justified sneer. Had her arms not already been crossed to keep her hands warm, she’d have done more than simply reaffirm the gesture. As if either of them even knew if her retort held any weight.
“I still remember some things.”
“Like where that spring was?”
“Like how pretty the snow can be.” It was clear for the moment – Vaati at least had the wit about him to curb the winds and clear the sky for this little outing – so no delicate flakes currently drifted though the air around them. “…The way it glitters in the sun. The smooth sheet of white that breaks up an otherwise rough and bare old mountain. I imagine hylians make the trek up here, just to see what it’s like to stand above the clouds.”
He turned back, and summoned a small whirlwind at his feet to clear a patch of the bright white he’d just been praising, then invites the princess to join him at he took a seat at the ledge.
“I… know a few surveyors have made it, to work on their maps.” Zelda muttered, snow crunching beneath her boots as she steadily made her way over. There was still a ways to go in terms of this fear of heights; by now she was generally fine as long as something was supporting her sides, be it a banister, or a large monstrous claw. An open ledge was a different matter. Really, that should have been a good thing – a healthy fear that kept you alive longer. Most people didn’t have some arrogant sorcerer that could swoop in and catch them.
Eventually, she reached Vaati and held his shoulder in a death grip as she eased herself down.
“That seems a bit much. I swear I’ve seen a man floating around in a balloon.”
“Well, most people don’t have that much of a death wish.”
“You’ve meant people personally who have charged at each other, on horseback, with large spears.”
“Lances. And I only said I knighted them.”
“And that’s not as bad as flying in a balloon?”
She shoved his shoulder. “You can fly! You’re not a good judge of risk, either!”
Vaati snickered, leaning away from the contact just to come right back and swing an arm around her shoulder. “Well, anyway. You don’t think could point out the borders from this angle?”
Zelda sighed. The wind mage’s embrace wasn’t exactly the warmest, but it did have a few layers to go through. For a good while, she looked ahead at the landscape sprawled out before them, before raising an arm out to start pointing. “Well… that forest there is where we found you. We should technically have a claim up to the outer bounds of those woods… but the Sea of Trees has always been far too dangerous to navigate.”
The same forest was taking on a slight yellowish hue… that was unusual, wasn’t it? It was always so warm there, autumn never seemed to touch it. Her hand trailed around the disputed ordonian province, to where she was fairly certain the old ruins were. “We have a claim to the old castor ruins, and… our border runs from that up to Mount Crenel, just before the rest of the Eldin Range.”
“Never seen any appeal in Death Mountain, have you?”
“Hardly. We’ve about mined everything we can out of Crenel, but… the rest of the range is far too active.” Another sigh. Chances were she’d never see that horrid range settle down in her lifetime. Unless their magicians could come up with a more reliable way to fireproof everyday armor. “Veil Falls is completely overrun with Zora, and… past those mesas is the Gerudo nation.”
Vaati surveyed the borders quietly. The Hebra range itself was well northeast of Veil Falls, and easily dwarfed the lesser peak.“...And you’ve never been further than the forest.”
“Not before you.”
“...Pity.”
And it was, wasn’t it? Two of the most powerful people in the world, and yet for princess, it was so small. For him, too hollow. It had changed as much as it had stayed the same, but he was looking at the past through fogged lenses. A empty familiarity.
“...I’ll give it to you, you know.” The promise left his mouth just as his thoughts caught up, and he realized he meant it. Vaati met Zelda’s confused expression with utter sincerity. “All of it. Sunset to Sunrise, as far as the eye can see.”
The princess blinked. Another grand gesture? She hazarded an uneasy smile. “That’s… sweet, but it’s not quite as simple as-”
“Sending a blizzard from here to the falls?” Vaati interrupted. “Suffocating Death Mountain with days of cold winds? Sabotaging each and every crop of your enemies with my incredible control over the weather itself?” He seemed to work himself up once more with each suggestion, an air of excitement already swirling about the idea.
“Ah…” No, no… the proposal was a serious one. It was something he could do. Would do. And it sounded like she had the final say. Complete dominion of Hyrule’s surrounding territories, a golden age, and an unstoppable force behind her to keep it going. Damn her if it wasn’t tempting.
“...Perhaps more tact than that.”
“But you are interested?”
“I…” she ran a hand along her cheek- it felt slightly numb. “...a less brutal approach, maybe. You understand that there’s still the matter of public support – and I can’t just rule all of that from the sky.”
“…” The mage quieted down once more – he tended to, whenever she brought up the prospect of visiting town, or otherwise going near the castle. Zelda was widely adored, of course she wouldn’t be keen to give that up. But that wasn’t an option with the circumstances of her disappearance. Certainly she knew that just as well as he did.
“We can… plan the specifics out more closely, later.” Vaati finally responded, breaking his stare from the castle to meet her eyes. “But… you really do look cold. Cider at the palace?”
Too quick to change the subject. She let out a short laugh. “I thought you’d never ask.”
