Hello everyone! This is a gift exchange in four steps, organised by the Vaderkin community (Vaderkin is a lightning rod discord) around Anakin | Vader’s character, to increase interactions between writers and artists and give everyone some time to shine!
✒️ Step 1: Writers write prompts for artists, everyone get matched depending on sign up answers.
🎨 Step 2: Artists have one month to draw one or more works from the prompts they received.
✒️ Step 3: Arts reveal. Writers get assigned one or several art pieces and have two months to write a minimum 500 words story inspired from them.
🎨 Step 4: Fics reveal. Drawing festival, every artist can draw fanart over the new stories created from the event (and be reblogged by this tumblr for it).

Hello everyone, and welcome to the Vaderkin Creative Exchange 2026!! This is a gift exchange in four steps, organised by the Vaderkin Commun
All works (art and fic) on tumblr will be reblogged by us and all works (art and fic) on ao3 can be added to the event collection. For this the work (on any platform) needs to be tagged properly with “Vaderkin creative exchange 2026” as well as the tag “explicit” if it is explicit (smut, strong graphic violence).
Overall, it’s a typical gift exchange , only writers’ prompts will be in image rather than words, and everyone is strongly encouraged to have fun and try their hand at sketching during the ‘drawing festival’.
Schedule:
Sign up open: March 5th, 2026
Sign up closes: April 27th, 2026
Artists receive prompts & giftee: May the 4th (be with you! 😉), 2026

Rules and FAQ under the cut
RULES
- This is an Anakin Skywalker | Darth Vader exchange. This character needs to be one of the main characters, or at least have a very strong presence in the artwork/story. Crossovers are accepted.
- Respect your Giftee's Do Not Want (DNW)
- Do not reveal who your Giftee is before the reveal date (same as when submissions must be in - June 14th for artists, August 3rd for writers). If you have a question, ask as anon through the Giftee's Tumblr or ask one of the event mods (we will serve as intermediary).
- Do not repost your gift content (especially art!) Mind your giftee’s extra request for AI-scraping protection if there is any. If you can, use the ao3 gift function to link to their profile. Otherwise, mention in your work post that this is a gift, with a mention of your giftee username and a link towards their tumblr/ao3/otherwise page, if they gave one.
- Do not use AI to produce your gift, be it to produce the prompts or to produce your art / written work.
- Avoid character bashing, kinkshaming, and ship wars. If one fits in your DNW (ex: You absolutely do not want Obikin content), mention it politely. This is an event for everyone to have fun! The fandom is wide, and there is space for everyone.
If any of the above rules is not respected, mods reserve the right to ban you from this and any future Vaderkin Community events.
By participating in this exchange, you commit yourself to producing one art piece if you sign up as an artist, one written fic if you sign up as writer, or one artwork and one fic if you sign up as both. If you can't complete your work, you must warn one of the mods at least one week before the deadline.
Please don’t forget to comment on your gift, even a small ’thank you’ to the artist/writer is better than nothing and will make everyone very happy!

FAQ
Can I draw a comic? Yes, a comic panel will be counted as an art piece.
Can I write a multi chapter story? Sure! Feel free to! But your first chapter must be able to pass as a one shot, and be finished by the writing deadline.
I missed the sign up deadline (27th April), can I still join? No, but you can still join during the Drawing Festival! The final event is open to everyone.
I only joined as an artist/writer but also wanted to participate as the other one. Same answer. The sign up closes in order for us to properly match everyone. But don’t hesitate to join and give gifts for the Drawing Festival!
Someone else also have the same writing prompt/art prompt/giftee as me, is this normal? Yes, this is how we balance the number difference between writers and artists. Prompt interpretation varies from person to person!
Can I do several art/fic works? Sure! In the case of art pieces, it will allow the writer to choose from which picture to draw inspiration from, like receiving several prompts, so several art pieces is highly encouraged!
I cannot finish my work in time, what do I do? Contact us ASAP and tell us your estimated delay. If you are an artist, keep in mind that your gifter cannot begin their writing work before your art piece is published.
I do not wish to participate anymore, what do I do? Contact us ASAP. Please try not to drop out right before the deadline, as we may have to create a work to replace yours.
Another @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod Creative Challenge piece, this one is for @nocturnalgremlingiant ! I was excited to try a slightly more angsty piece based off the prompt “Vader looking at his twins and seeing Padme”. Hopefully it translated but I tried to make it look like the scene was being viewed by Vaderkin through his helmet. I also included an unhelmeted version below the cut. Overall this was fun, I don’t draw Luke enough!
I used this Aurek Besh translator for the text. It says “target acquired”
And here's the fic I was gifted based on this art, thank you @totally-nromal-brain-functions for writing such a lovely fic inspired by this piece!! @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod
Author's Notes- Why is this posted on Tumblr and not Ao3, you ask? Because long story short, my account got deleted. But uh, I hope you like it! @sinvulkt, I truly enjoyed creating something off of your gorgeous art, and I hope it's everything you asked for!
Ahsoka panted as she staggered to the top of the mountain. Normally, such exertion was nothing compared to blocking blaster bolts and cutting down clankers for hours or days without respite, but she'd run the entire way uphill without pausing even once in her haste to get away from the negotiations. Was scaling an entire mountain- even if it was only about a three thousand meter climb- overkill? Yeah, probably, but she wanted somewhere where she could sulk in peace, and this was probably the only area where no one would find her for a while. She collapsed onto the ground, chest heaving as she gulped in the crisp mountain air greedily.
Force, she was such a failure. What kind of Jedi was she when she managed to screw up even a simple diplomatic mission? An important diplomatic mission, at that. They really needed Aligi to stay in the Republic, and not secede to the Separatists as they had been threatening- the Republic desperately needed the ore they produced, vital as it was to manufacturing the hyperdrives of the Venators they relied on so heavily. Useless, she thought to herself. Useless, stupid, worthless. Can't even do one thing right.
Well, that wasn't completely correct. She was good at war, good at fighting right alongside the men that made up the 501st legion that she was the Commander of. She was good at being a soldier, but she was terrible at being a peacekeeper like the Jedi were supposed to be. Peacekeepers. What was that even supposed to mean, when they allowed the Senate to turn them into an army of Generals and Commanders, bringing the war to every planet that they went to? This was the type of mission they were supposed to be good at, and she was failing miserably. So then what kind of Jedi does that make me? She wondered despairingly, wrapping her arms around her knees and burying her face in them. A few tears welled in her eyes, and she let them fall- she never let herself cry. Crying was a sign of weakness, and she couldn't afford to be weak, not when so many people depended on her.
She allowed herself to wallow in her frustration- she'd never had the time or the privacy to do so before now- always being shunted from battle to battle, constantly surrounded by the 501st, the civilians of the planets they were fighting on, or her far too perceptive Master. She didn't know how long she'd been on the ground at the summit of the mountain, still hunched over into a ball, when she was suddenly buffeted by a strong wind and something hard thumped the back of her montrals.
She shrieked- though she would vehemently deny ever doing so when teased about it later- and immediately jumped to her feet, lightsabers in hand, crouching into a ready stance, only to falter as a familiar voice sounded in her head, wryly amused-
Well, Snips, I thought I'd find you here.
-and was greeted with the sight of the blunt snout, large, glittering sapphire eyes, massive scaled body and feathery wings that belonged to her Master.
XXX
Anakin didn't bother trying to fight back his toothy smile upon seeing his Padawan's pouting face. She always tried to play tough, but she was still a kid. Ahsoka was far too young to have such large burdens placed on her slim shoulders, far too young to be immersed in the horrors of war.
He'd seen her bolt out of the ballroom after the misstep she'd made in talking to the King's youngest son, but had needed to stay to smooth over the Prince's ruffled feathers. It was an easy task, if he was being honest. The Prince was a spoiled brat who had never suffered a day in his life, and it showed. His parents- the King and Queen- were much more down-to-earth and egalitarian than their spoiled rotten youngest spawn and had torn him a new one. His older siblings were senior officials in the planet's government and knew that their people were the backbone of their society. It was a relief, honestly, that at least some leaders knew that leadership and privilege meant that they served the people first and not themselves, unlike nearly everyone in the Senate.
Force, the Senate. The rotted heart of the Republic that the Jedi served like so many fanatic minions. Like slaves who couldn't see their shackles. Anakin sometimes wondered if he'd simply traded one set of chains for another when he'd left his mother and Tatooine behind to become a Jedi with Qui-Gon. Most days, it seemed that way. Fighting a war he couldn't understand the meaning of. He knew the Separatists were bad, of course. He had seen what Dooku was allying himself with- slavers, and corrupt businessmen who were just as good as slavers. But the people of the Outer Rim who simply wanted freedom from the corruption that was eating away at them? That, he could understand. That, he knew all too well. What good had the Republic done for Tatooine, except to keep the Hutts in power so that they could use their hyperlanes and buy their spice freely? What good had the Jedi done, for all that they claimed to serve all the people? All the people of the Republic and no more, and not even all the people then, too. Just the people that the Senate told them to help.
He was guilty of that, too. Every time he thought of the way that he'd rescued Jabba's son and had had his lightsaber to the slug's throat and instead of killing him had negotiated with him, he wanted to turn his lightsaber on himself instead. He'd massacred the Tuskens like the animals they were - though killing the women and the children haunted him. He kept seeing their dead bodies, surrounding the tent where they had brutalized his mother for the long weeks before he had come for her. Killing the unarmed was not the Jedi way, but he wasn't much of a Jedi, to his eternal shame. Too old when he arrived, too attached to his mother and his past life, too powerful in the Force, too angry, too caring about all the wrong things, too everything. He was married, for the love of it all. He loved Padmé- she was the love of his life, his Angel, his confidant, and he would choose her over the Jedi Order every time with no hesitation. And the Clones… Force, the Clones. He was leading an army of slaves. He'd become the very thing he hated so much- a slaver. It felt like he was spitting on Shmi Skywalker's grave, like he was dishonoring her wish for him to be free, to go be a Jedi, to be a good person. When had he stopped doing that? When had he started to just accept things?
But he couldn't get lost in his own head now. Anakin had a Padawan to find and comfort and reassure. Ahsoka. Another failing of his. She was fifteen, and while he loved her like the younger sister he never had, part of him wished that she had never been assigned to him. What could he possibly give her? An ex-slave, a murderer, a slaver… she deserved more. She deserved to grow up in peace, with someone who wasn't as broken as he was. Someone who could teach her to be what it meant to be a Jedi in peace, not a General. He had seen death from the cradle… one of his earliest memories was of a Rodian trying to run and being blown up from his slave chip. He didn't wish that on anyone. What did he have to teach a bright young kid like Ahsoka? All he taught her was how to kill and how to survive, with the occasional mechanics lesson thrown in. That was all he was good at- none of the philosophy and meditation and inner peace and serenity and detachment that a Jedi was supposed to know. Sometimes he wondered if Ahsoka would've been better off with Obi-Wan as she was originally intended to be. Other times, he thought that Obi-Wan would have smothered all the fire out of his bright, enthusiastic, bubbly, courageous Padawan.
Ah, he was getting lost in his musings again. Well, it wouldn't be too hard to find Ahsoka. Their bond meant that he never truly lost sense of her. And oh, there she was. But honestly, did she have to climb to the top of a mountain? Granted, it wasn't a very tall mountain, more of a glorified hill, really. But still. If she'd wanted to be alone to sulk, there were closer places for her to do it. But no matter. He was a Jedi- long distances were nothing for people who could bolster themselves with the Force- and more than that, he was unique in the fact that vertical distances were especially easy for him.
But first, he had to get somewhere where he could shift in private. More likely than not, he would have to scale at least some of the mountain so that he could transform without being seen. Anakin sighed. He'd hoped to actually get some downtime on this mission- he'd gotten blown up on the last one trying to protect a squad of the Vod'e from a grenade, and Kix had sentenced him to light activity only, and then had proceeded to threaten to sic Obi-Wan on him if he refused. Anakin loved his Master, he really did, but the man was an insufferable hypocrite sometimes. He sighed, nothing to do for it but start. The only way forward is through, as he had heard his mother say so many times before- to whipped friends, slaves in labor with children that had been forced upon them.
He turned and started jogging out of the gardens to the base of the mountain. He thanked whoever had designed and built the palace for making sure that the edge of the gardens blended in with the start of the mountain. The guards posted at the wall nodded acknowledgement as they let him through the side gate that led to the wooded beginnings of the mountain. Once he was out of eye's view of the gardens and surrounded by a dense thicket of trees, he finally allowed himself to shift.
Anakin reached into himself for that thread of otherness that allowed him to change into his dragon form. He'd been told by the few people that he had allowed to see him shift that it looked painful, but to him, it was freeing. He'd spent so many years hiding his true nature, unable to live as he truly was. Even though he still hid the majority of the time for the fear of becoming a subject in some lab, it was still better than nothing. What was the pain of shifting when he'd spent the first decade of his life suffering pain for no reason except someone else's sick amusement? Flight was freedom, after all. At least for him it was.
His dragon form was some odd cross of a bird and a reptile. Reptavian, Obi-Wan had called it, like a varactyl. He had scales on his face and limbs, but feathers everywhere else. Good for cuddling Ahsoka or Padme, but not so great for intimidation. Sometimes he wished that he looked more like the Krayts found in the ever-shifting Tatooine sands- they were properly fierce looking, with their visages matching their reputations as fearsome apex predators.
The wind flowed through the feathers on the fringes of his wings, and he inhaled, filling the bellows of his lungs with the crisp mountain air, untainted by smoke and ash and dust and the scent of blood and metal and fire. He climbed swiftly, wings pumping steadily as he ascended up the slope. He relished the strain in his muscles- he never got to use them as much as he wanted to. The flight was over too soon, though, because he could see the summit above his head.
He paused for a moment, wings beating the air to hold him in a hover. Slower now, though, he didn't want Ahsoka to hear him. He could sense her distress and despair in the bond, and it made his heart clench. She really was far too much like him for her own good- she felt everything and she felt everything fiercely. Why should she feel guilty because a boy- he had to be real, despite the Prince being nineteen, he was still a child in every way that mattered- got insulted when a girl younger than him and more experienced corrected him, ran off crying to his parents? Well, kriff all of it. Ahsoka was so wrapped up in her own mind that she hadn’t sensed him yet. That was good. She needed a little fun in her life.
Mind made up, he cloaked himself even deeper in the Force and shot up the remaining distance to the peak as a black blur, not stopping until he saw Ahsoka and flared his wings in one arresting motion to stop all his forwards-and-upwards momentum, thumping her on the back of her montrals as he did. Not very hard, mind you, he wasn’t trying to give her a concussion. And wouldn’t that have been fun, trying to explain that to Kix when they got back on the Resolute? No, Kix, there wasn’t a battle. How was she injured? Well, you see… I was just trying to cheer her up after some kriffing spoiled son of a bantha hurt her feelings and may have accidentally shoved her down a mountain… Yeah, that would not have ended well. But hey, she was fine, and if the glare that she was throwing at him was any indication… he had sufficiently distracted her from her sulking. Mission accomplished.
Now he just had to figure out how to make her feel better.
XXX
Ahsoka sighed, turning off her lightsabers and clipping them back onto her belt, glaring at her ever-irreverent Master, who was hovering a few feet away from her, blunt snout level with the top her montrals, close enough that his breath washed over them. He did not look suitably cowed by her glower, which was insulting. It was a very fierce glower, if she said so herself. He kept grinning his draconic grin, baring all of his long teeth.
Snips, if you had to choose a place to sulk, did it have to be the top of a mountain? There are other places- better places.
Ahsoka scowled. “First off, Skyguy, I was not sulking, I was brooding. Second, the whole point of brooding is to be left alone with your thoughts, and this was the only place I could think of where no one would find me. Clearly, I was wrong.”
Anakin snorted- and wasn’t that unfair, that was properly intimidating with his barrel chest and massive size- Mmmhmmm, Snips. You never thought, ‘oh hey, maybe my Master has a telepathic bond with me and can track my location pretty much anywhere?’ Or how about this- ‘let’s just climb a three kilometer tall mountain to be alone, and forget about the fact that my Master can transform into a great hulking reptile that can fly?’ And besides, Padawan, you absolutely were sulking. There’s no other word for it.
She crossed her arms, staring at the rocks beneath her feet. “Okay, fine, I didn’t think this whole thing through very well. I just wanted to get out of there. Wouldn’t you, if you screwed up the negotiations with a massively important planet because you couldn’t hold your tongue and now they might go and sell their resources to the Separatists instead?”
A shove to her head, which caused her to stagger, arms coming out to balance her. Well, I don’t have to imagine. Anakin’s mental voice sounded bitter. Do you know how many times I’ve actually ruined negotiations? According to Obi-Wan, I’m a walking disaster with my words. Apparently, telling the rulers and important officials flat-out that their plans will go fantastically wrong is the diplomatic equivalent of causing a speeder crash that ends in flames and sirens. So, really, what you did was nothing. You didn’t ruin anything, by the way- that really should have been the first thing I said. All that happened was that the King and Queen tore their son a new one- and it was a sight, Snips.
Wait, what?
… Right there in the ballroom in front of everyone. Called him spoiled and ignorant and a shame upon the royal house, and then sent him to his room with his tail between his legs. You’ll get an apology when you get back, and it’ll probably be a good one. The rulers may be somewhat shady for threatening to sell out to the Separatists, but they might be genuinely good people other than that. So all your self-flagellation earlier about not being a good Jedi… let it go. Just because you are good at some things and not others doesn’t make you a failure, Snips, or a bad Jedi, it just means that you still have things to learn.
Oh, Force, he’d heard that? She’d really have to work on her shielding. She often forgot just how powerful her Master was- most days, that was, and then he would say little things like this, or do big things like blow up a mountain or melt a platoon of battle droids with just his mind and Ahsoka was reminded that he was the Chosen One, the son of the Force. Destined to do great things, bring balance to the Force. What was she in comparison to that?
Another shove to the head, harder this time. Anakin’s eyes were glittering dangerously when she looked up at him. You are Ahsoka Tano, you are my padawan, and that is enough. And no one knows whether I am the Chosen One or not. I certainly haven’t done anything to be worthy of that title. And I’ve told you before- while Yoda may have assigned you to me when I didn’t want a Padawan, I do not regret you. It is the will of the Force that you are at my side, and I will do everything within my power to keep you there, and keep you there in one piece. That’s a Master’s job, Snips.
The reassurance helped, Ahsoka supposed. Made her feel like less of a burden. And it was nice to hear that her Master didn’t consider her one.
Now, how exactly were you planning on getting down from here? Her Master’s tone had gone back to mischievous.
“I don’t know,” she said sarcastically. “Climb down, using my legs, how else would I get down from the peak of a mountain?”
Or, he suggested, I can give you a ride. Ahsoka perked up- she rarely got to climb onto her Master’s back when he was a dragon, and nothing ever felt quite like it, not even flying in her starfighter. She couldn’t feel the wind whipping in her face then, or feel the thrill Skyguy got out of flying under his own power, just him and the wind.
Anakin chuckled, sensing her shift in mood. Climb on, then. It’s getting late, and I can’t fly us down all the way without being seen, so we’re going to have to hike the last bit. And I want to see the look on the Prince’s face when he apologizes to you.
Ahsoka smiled, and climbed onto her Master’s back when he landed on the ground and crouched down a little. She shifted around his back, trying to get comfortable without impaling herself on one of his spines.
You good? He asked, once she had stopped squirming.
“Yeah,” she replied. “Let’s go.”
And Anakin leapt into the air, wings beating hard as he gained altitude. She grinned, and crouched down closer to his neck as he soared down the side of the mountain.
Author's notes, again- I came up with a planet because I couldn't bother to do research and find a canon one. And on this planet, it's considered rude to use names unless you are close to the person, which is why people are referred to by their titles. Also because I am lazy.
For @silvercrow72, your artwork has inspired the creation of a world, and I hope I did it justice. This will be posted to my Ao3 when I get it back and gifted to you properly, then.
Chapter One
Vader’s powerful wings beat the air as he flew. It felt so natural, to feel the wind currents, to use his wings to shape the gusts to his advantage, his tail swinging as a rudder to stabilize himself. It was so unlike anything he had felt in the past ten years. So unlike anything he had been allowed to feel, had allowed himself to feel. It was freeing, as nothing ever had been. And when he felt movement on his back, in the space between his neck and his shoulders, he remembered why he had allowed himself to feel again, who he had allowed himself to feel for again.
His son. His precious son that he had loved so much before he had even met. The son who he had lost, and regained. The one clinging to the spines on his neck, tiny hands clutching tight.
“Dad,” Luke started, voice unusually serious. The ten-year-old had called him Father for all of two months before he had switched to Dad. “You promised that we would talk today. You promised.”
Luke had been begging him to tell him more about his life as Anakin Skywalker since the day he had found out that his father was alive. Understandable. Everyone wanted to know where they came from, what had shaped their lives before they even existed. Vader had done the same thing, asking his mother how exactly he had been born. He’d never believed Shmi Skywalker when she’d said that he had no father. That he was a gift from the gods. The salvation that she had prayed for. Slaves always said that when they didn’t want to relive the experiences that had given rise to their children. Virginal conception was not real, not for people like them. Except they had been property, not people, and that was the whole crux of the matter.
“Dad,” Luke begged when he had been silent too long. “You have been saying that you would tell me more later for so long. I want to know, please. You said that I deserved to know. So why can’t I know? Why won’t you tell me?”
Why couldn’t he? He’d been drowning in the guilt of his actions for the past decade, flagellating himself over it as penance. He had thought constantly about what he could have done differently to save his family from the fate he had inflicted upon them. But confessing all of his sins to his son… could he bear that? To see the same hatred in his son’s eyes that he saw in the eyes of so many of the Empire’s citizens?
He could. He would have to. He’d sworn to himself and to Luke that he would never lie to his son. That he would teach and protect him, as a Father should. And to do that… he would have to confess. To lay all his sins bare before the last bright thing in his life, and then watch that light leave him, too.
Little Sun… His mental voice was so unrecognizable to himself now, used as he was to the lifeless, cold, harsh tones that came out of Vader’s helmet. He had forced himself to not regret anything about his suit, knowing that he had deserved every piece of it for what he had done. That voice belonged to the past, had belonged to Anakin Skywalker, a person he had killed with his own hands. But to protect his son- to keep his promise about not lying to Luke as so many others had done, even with the best intentions in mind- he would have to tell him. A sigh. I will tell you everything, once we get back to the cave.
“Everything?” Luke asked suspiciously.
Everything. He confirmed, keeping his eyes fixed on the horizon. I promised to tell you, and you deserve to know. The truth- the full truth- is the least of the things I owe you.
“You mean it?”
Yes. No matter how much it hurt, he would tell Luke everything. He deserved the pain, after all. It was all his fault. They flew together in silence the rest of the way back to the cave that was their home.
Turns out I had the same giftee for art and fic, so here is my fic for @mistressaugury, loosely based on her art for the @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod Exchange event.
For the ever amazing @aprimoon 🥰🤭✨this is for the @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod exchange fest!

summary:
The black hole in his chest quivers. He is too unstable to ever reach a state of metanoia; but for Obi-Wan, Anakin will try. Always, unequivocally. So long as Obi-Wan is near, the air in his lungs has purpose, poisoned though it may be. If he infects Obi-Wan, who better than Anakin to extract the poison?
Here is a gift for RivanaRita ( @rivanarita ) as part of Vaderkin Creative Exchange 2026 hosted by @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod !! Some dragon Vaderkin and his sulking padawan :3
Another @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod Creative Challenge piece, this one is for @nocturnalgremlingiant ! I was excited to try a slightly more angsty piece based off the prompt “Vader looking at his twins and seeing Padme”. Well I got ambitious again, I really should stop doing that and make time
I hope you like your present @sinvulkt with all the angst and dragons lol
side notes:
Yes you bet PPT will use the cherry bombs with allergy pollen and poisonous explosives on the battle field - and yes, he will harvest some of the branches as experiments to grab enemies by bursting from the ground.
Ani made good friends with the agricorps - by help growing plants in the garden, and fields.
Memories lit for a moment still slip back into the darkness of regret
For @eldarianduelist for the @vaderkin-is-a-lightning-rod Creative Exchange.
I hope you enjoy!
Vader Content: Ruminating, pining, the deep weight of regret, and a sliver of hope that still burns; the deep stress of being in far too deep, denying yourself the idea of a choice.
