What Are You So Scared Of?
It feels like Iām getting stabbed in the lungs. Yeah, definitely like getting stabbed in the lungs with blood filling up my stomach. God, I fucking hate cardio. Looking over my shoulder I see six or seven of āem- all big and burly and theyāre coming in fast. I barely know them, but we share a mutual hatred. Itās natural, really. Iām prey and theyāre predators. Luckily, I got a bigger brain than them. If only I could use it for anything other than antagonizing them.
I shouldnāt complain; they motivate me. I love the euphoria of exercise but can never seem to get up and make myself do it. They help with that. They have these helpful, motivational quotes like, āRun if you can you fucking faggot! Weāll find you!ā
Heās pissed. I canāt really blame him- Iād be mad too if someone took a fucking razor blade to the new car Daddy bought me.
Whyād I do it? Why not?
Because thatās the natural order of things.
I haul ass through the weeds and hollowed out trees. The trees steadily control less and less of the terrain-giving room for more and more awful dead grass. There used to be a pond here. Frogs and lizards could be found in childrenās fists while showing them off to their little friends- squeezing the life out of them. Simpler times, really.
āIām gonna fucking kill you!!ā
Past the non-pond are just fields. Fields that seem to meld seamlessly with the horizon- I donāt even know if Iām on public property anymore. I jumped a dilapidated fence a while back, but there are no buildings in sight. Just grass-brown, withered, and never ending.
Probably shouldnāt have done what I did. Probably shouldnāt do most things I do. Being bored and getting high often ends in poor decision making. My dad always lectures me on it.
Every choice you make has consequences, and know this, youāre making choices that are going to affect you for the rest of your life. . Heās probably right.
Like the trees, the assholes are getting further behind me. The ground beneath me shakes a little less and my ears can now hear things other than their threats. But I know theyāre still coming.
And I do. I keep running. Ā I run so much I can feel my feet catch fire and the skin on my toes peel away- slowly fusing with my socks.
FUCK!!! ā¦Didnāt see that rock there. Everything slows down and I watch the horizon glide above my head. My eyes are closed and my breath is held.
Situational awareness! Dad always says. If you donāt know whatās going on around you, how can you react effectively?
My face becomes immediately acquainted with the dirt and pebbles beneath me. It sounds like a train car colliding with a couple hundred pounds of TNT. It hurts, to say the least. Did I just fall into a pressure cooker? Everythingās both amplified and muffled; I think I cracked my skull open.
Shit. My head slowly rises and my eyes see two of everything. The blades of grass are two-stepping, the clouds swirl in tiny circles. Heh, look at the birds. Somethingās in front of me. I can barely make it out at first. The pain is less intense now, but thereās something else in its place. Paralysis, maybe petrification, but instead of inhibiting my body- itās attacking my soul. I can only lie here, trying to figure out exactly what it is I see. The first thing I see is the reflection of the sun in its marble eye. Then, I see its tongue- its nostrils and its tail.
Isnāt this quite the surprise?
It moves like one of those illusion things. You know those posters or whatever that look one way depending on your perspective then another if you change your angle? Itās surreal. It unwraps itself and creeps toward me. The ground is shaking again
Whatās your name, young man?
Its mouth doesnāt move- it just keeps sticking its tongue out at me and flaring its nostrils. I canāt answer. I try, but my jaw feels Ā wired shut. All I can do is stare. And it stares directly back.
You know, itās rude to ignore a direct question.
It keeps moving toward me. The thing seems to be a mile long- just uncoiling and uncoiling and uncoiling. Ā Fuck cardio- Iām exhausted. Come on- come on- just...stand up. I slowly push myself off the ground- keeping my eyes steadied on it. I can see it now in its entirety. It stops unravelling and puts its head on the ground- somehow the eyes still seem fixed on me.
Youāre scared. Thereās no need for that. Your slack-jawed enemies have given up their pursuit and I mean you no harm.
Pull it together, man! Iām in the field with the dried up pond. I was running from a bunch of sociopaths and I fell and hit my head. Iām hallucinating. Thatās it. Thatās all this is, a head injury. I double check to be sure. Thatā¦thing is gone. Whatever it was. Thereās nothing here but me and my screaming skull. Iām leaving. If I can cut through the back way, I can get home and lie down. I just need to lie down.
Thatā¦was fucking terrifying. Iāve never been so scared my whole life. That was like a red hot knife cutting my soul. The most piecing feeling Iāve ever felt.
Is this how you treat all those who try to help you?!
Itās directly in front of me now. But this isnāt real. This is fake. Thereās nothing here. Itās just me.
Tsk-tsk-tsk. What a shame. You seem to have the capacity to do great things. But, I suppose youāre tired of hearing that old diatribe, arenāt you?
That voice. Its voice is parental and sincere but- seductive and enticing. I see it a little clearer now. Fully spread out, itās about six feet in length- six inches in diameter. It never lifts itself off the ground- or at least I havenāt seen it do so.
āWhatā¦whatās going on? What are you talking about?ā
I swear I see a smile flick across its face.
Well then, thereās a fellow! You can speak! I must say, I was a bit worried I found myself a rather slack jawed compatriot.
Try not to speak, if you can. I find the arbitrary rules of auditory language detracts from the real crux of the conversation. I can understand you fine without you ever even having to think about the words to say.
āWhat?...the fuck are you talking about?ā
Please! I cannot stand to hear you speak.
Thereās that smile again.
Youāre a troubled young man. I can see it.
Please, please! I do not mean to offend. In fact, I intend to help you.
Help me? I donāt need help! Iām fucking fine.
Oh, hush! Foolish pride begets only negative results. I should know. Besides, how can you say that? You exist in a constant state of purgatory. No happy past to relish in, no rewarding present to help ease your pain, and certainly no promising future to motivate you. At least not as long as you stay on the course youāre currently jaunting about on.
Ok, Dad. Wait, how do you know all this?
I told you I intend to help you. And I do. I can provide some reprieve for you, if you would like.
Reprieve? Whatā¦what do you mean?
This whole situation is completely out of control. I need to get home. I need to lie down. I need to stop talking to this thing. Is it even, real?
If you would like to leave, you may. You hold no obligation to me. But may I ask? When do you plan on facing your consequences? When will you realize that you simply cannot out run life itself?
Iā¦Iā¦I donāt know how to answer that.
Of course you donāt! You, like untold millions before you, wander through your life without regard for anything. You, however, are extremely fortunate for having met me. Most others live for decades in constant dissatisfaction before dying in a small room filled with a small few who, though they would never admit it aloud, are just waiting for the whole ordeal to be over so that they may return to their hollow lives and repeat the entire process. I can save you from all the misery.
Speechless, I slowly fall to me knees.
What⦠what are you suggesting?
All that is required of you is quiet compliance. Butā¦you will be done with this life. And that is what is important.
Backwards, I fall to my ass. This is insane.
Iāve always hated those asshole suburbanites- nuclear family bullshit. Everyone grows up to be a drone. Buy this, fuck that. Then have kids and buy this shit. Fuck that.
I feel it slowly make its way up my leg; like its voice, itās warm to the touch but thereās a lingering sensation of thrill and terror. The world begins to spin like when you try to sleep but youāre too dehydrated. I feel a fever coming on. There was a sharp pain somewhere along where it slid across me, but the pain has spread all throughout me now. This was the best decision Iāve ever made. Are you proud, Dad?
