âYouâre getting married?âÂ
She only just got Frank backâafter ten years of phone calls and facetimes and rushed visits and being on opposite coasts for undergrad and med school and early residency, heâd finally moved home, sheâd finally gotten him back.Â
And now heâs getting married?Â
âAbbyâs pregnant,â he says, running a hand through his hair and pacing. âWhat am I supposed to do?âÂ
âI donât know,â she squeaks. She always thought someday theyâd figure it out, that all his girlfriends were just temporary, and that maybe heâd figure out that he loved her too. But now his girlfriendâhis supposed to be temporary girlfriend heâs only been dating for six monthsâis pregnant and theyâre getting married?Â
Thatâs not how this is supposed to go.Â
âDo you even want to get married?â Mel asks, grasping at straws. Theyâre twenty-eight today, she supposes itâs not a bad age to get married, but theyâre still in their residency for godâs sake. She couldnât imagine getting married right now, let alone having a kid.Â
âI donât know,â he answers, exasperated. âI always thought Iâd get married, someday, I just didnât thinkââ He looks away from her and puts his hands on his hips. âI didnât think itâd be now. With Abby.âÂ
âYou donât have to do anything,â Mel points out. âYou donât have toââÂ
âWhat would you have me do, Mel!â Frank yells. âAbby is having a baby, my baby, and Iâm just supposed to not be a part of the kids life? Or figure out custody and only see the baby a couple weekends a month?âÂ
âNo, of course not,â she agrees. âI justâŚI donât know, weâre in residency, weâre so young, I didnât thinkââÂ
âCan you think of any reason why I shouldnât marry Abby?âÂ
Melâs eyes snap to his. The question comes out of nowhere, but thereâs weight to it, desperation to it. Frankâs looking at her like heâs waiting for something, like heâs waiting for her to connect the dots, to say something specific, but her mind goes blank.Â
Everything Frankâs said makes sense. He likes Abby, sheâs a kind and loving woman who is having his child, why wouldnât he get married to her? And heâs always wanted kids, why wouldnât he want to have a baby, this baby, with Abby?
So what if she loves him? So what if sheâll never love anyone else as long as Frank Langdon roams the earth? Frank wants this, and Mel could never take this from him, not ever, no matter how much she loves him and always has.Â
âNo,â she says softly, shrinking away from him. âNo, I canât.âÂ
Frankâs face falls. He puts a hand over his mouth in disbelief, his eyebrows raising, the breath huffing out of him like heâs been punched in the gut.Â
âOkay then,â he says after a long moment, refusing to look at her. âIf thatâs what you want, Mel, then okay.âÂ
âFrank, what do you meanââ
âHappy fucking birthday, Mel.â
