His teeth connected with her skin for the first time, the sharpness of them digging into her pillowy flesh.
One of his hands pinned her arms down above her, while the other wrapped around her throat.
He ripped her shirt from her body, sinking his teeth into the vein running through the top of her cleavage. His mouth sucking the blood straight from her heart.
“I can smell your blood from miles away.” He had told her only minutes ago, when the blood thirst had taken over him. “I don’t want to hurt you, Mel. You have to leave, now. Go somewhere far away, somewhere I can’t find you.”
He knew what he was capable of when he got like this; he knew the pain he could inflict. He never, ever wanted Mel to experience that pain.
She should have been scared; she should have taken off running for the hills, but instead she stepped closer to him, his blue eyes drawing her in. She couldn’t leave him; she wouldn’t leave him.
“You don’t scare me.” She said, stepping closer to him.
He showed her his fangs, the sharp teeth dropping down from his gums. His eyes turned a shade of red she knew all too well, dark like blood.
“Are you scared now?” He hissed.
But all she felt was love, sickening, deep, love. He was so hungry and she wanted, needed, to feed him.
“I want you to feed from me.”
She took a knife from the kitchen drawer and cut a deep gash into her skin. The scent of her blood flooded his senses; it was all he could see, all he could hear, the pumping of her heart. It’s all he wanted.
“Mel, you don’t know what you’ve done.” His voice was low, almost a growl.
In a flash, he was on her, his hands connecting with her wrists and throat, pinning her to the wall. He had never been good with self-control—she liked that about him— it’s how they ended up together in the first place.
She had asked for this, wanted this. His teeth sinking into her. The deepest level of connection. If the last thing she does with her life is feed Frank, she will die happy, knowing he is full of her.

Frank has not slept with Abby for months. This does not bother him. Rehab left him with no taste for it, for anything resembling intimacy.
The first time he feels desire, wants connection, again is after speaking to Mel. There is nothing particular about the day, nothing particular about what they say to each other, only Mel standing there after a double shift, hair disheveled, the hem of her scrubs folded, exhausted. This image his mind converts into something else. The thought is intrusive and immediate: this is how Mel would look after sex.
It surprises him—the force of his infatuation, the depravity, the way it takes hold. During the worst of his drinking—heady nights of Librium followed by Lager—he resigned himself to celibacy. Sex couldn’t begin to touch what drugs touched.
And now sex—specifically sex with Mel, her sweet round face and honey-braid and the little yelps she lets out when a patient surprises her—is that what she would sound like? This is all he thinks about. He googles is it normal to fantasize about your coworker and glasses blonde doctor pornhub. Putting Mel in Abby’s place is easy. They have been putting people in each other’s places for half their marriage, he suspects, if not longer.

Really, he married Abby to prove a point: he could be normal. He could have the wife and the house and the pretty yard, the two kids, the dog. He could have it all.
(He can’t, as it turns out, but by then it’s too late).
Abby is just another placeholder, a slot labeled wife in need of filling, and that is the crux of the problem: anyone willing to play the role could have taken Abby’s place. Abby, like cigarettes at the checkout counter, convenient, easy to reach, there at the right time. Abby.
Sometimes I remember that he SOUGHT HER OUT and then without prompting he ASKED HOW THE DEPOSITION WENT and proactively VALIDATED THAT IT WAS STRESSFUL FOR HER while everyone else just blew her off and I just blargh…

there's room for so much tension if they have to treat a patient together and langdon and santos have contradicting viewpoints on what to do, while mel is in the middle of it all just trying her best. or if they're ever in the breakroom or outside at the same time and have an argument
bc afaik mel doesn't even know why they avoid each other, but they're both friendly towards/respectful of her
