Skulls photographed by Paul Koudounaris during Bolivia’s annual Fiesta de las Ñatitas.
Roughly translating to ‘the little pug-nosed ones’, ñatitas are enshrined within the homes of the Aymara people. They’re said to provide a range or services, from spiritual guidance to support with domestic problems.
A ñanita can be the skull of a relative, or those of strangers obtained from medical schools or cemeteries. When a skull is taken as a ñatita, it’s said that the spirit will reveal an identity to the owner, often within a dream.
During the annual fiesta, offerings are given to the ñatitas to thank them for their service. Common tributes include coca leaves, flowers, cigarettes and alcohol.

“Dharma art refers to art that springs from a certain state of mind on the part of the artist that could be called the meditative state. It is an attitude of directness and unself-consciousness in one's creative work.”
