Wait. Hold the phone. Stop the press.

You’re telling me. The guy who has been built up over the course of months as spiraling from stress and guilt and self-loathing. The guy who just had a panic attack in the apartment of a man he was in the process of acting wrongfully aggressive towards due to that same mounting stress and loss of control.

And the girl. The girl who had, one panel prior to their argument, had her head buried in her hands from the overwhelm of the immediate situation she was placed under.

Those two people had an argument? Those two severely stressed, wrung out people… acted imperfectly, under imperfect circumstances?

Ho-lee shit dude. That’s wild, dude. Unforgivable. Next you’re going to tell me that people yell when they’re angry. That’s unforgivable. Everyone knows yelling is unproductive. Just don’t yell.

In all seriousness, some fans can be so keen to take offense on behalf of characters that the whole point is missed, which is to reflect how character backstories and relevant plot lines have impacted them through their interactions. You are deriving the least interesting possible conclusion, and worse, allowing it to color how you feel about how (bad) a character intrinsically is, when this behavior is explicitly born of external factors. Even Stephanie, the “aggrieved” party, recognizes the underlying issue, which is why it’s mind blowing to me that the key takeaway still seems to be “wow this person is meaaaaan”.

None of this is to dismiss that he did act poorly, by the way. Him acting poorly was the point. You are simply missing the vital word: “because”. He is an asshole because… you know. Being interested in the why is a critical part of engaging with this kind of media.

Maybe put down the superhero media and pick up Wonder Pets if you can’t handle any level of messiness LMAO.
