Description: After what happened in Kijuju, Chris was taking him and Jill to Claire's house to get some rest. Being troubled by her actions, Jill opens up to Chris about the burden she bears.
Read Burden from the story Valenfield Oneshot by CaitlynHexStrap by CaitlynHexStrap with 1 reads. residentevil, angst...
In the light of the evening sun, Jill sat in the passenger seat, wind blowing in her face. Chris was in the driver's seat with one hand on the wheel and the other holding his head up.
They were finally back from Kijuju, and Chris was taking them to Claire’s house while she was out of town. It was a bit of a way out, but he didn’t mind the drive. They both could use some time away from the city anyways.
Jill hadn’t spoken a word the whole ride. Chris knew that whatever happened to her was traumatizing, but her silence felt strange. Chris took his eyes off the road and peeked over at her, seeing her looking out the window with her arms crossed around her chest. Her head was leaned up against the door. She looked tired but also sad.
“Claire mentioned there is a steak house by her place.” Chris broke the silence, shifting his gaze between Jill and the road. “We should try it one night.” Chris’s proposal was left hanging in the air, with no response from Jill.
He let out a sigh, seeing Jill didn’t even flinch at his words, as if she was purposely ignoring them. “What happened to you… I imagine it was hard. Being trapped in your own body forces you to do things you didn’t want to do. You're stronger than I can ever be.”
Despite Chris’s attempt to try and get Jill to open up, she still stayed quiet in her seat, staring off in the grass fields that were painted with an orange hue. Chris gazed at her one more time, seeing the light paint her face, before turning his head back to the road and reaching for the knob of the radio, not being able to only listen to just the wind blowing into the car, but as he reached for the knob, Jill turned her head and spoke.
“I tried.”
Chris froze his hand and looked over at her. She was staring aimlessly at the road ahead of them. “I really did try to kill you, to kill Sheva; there was nothing I wanted more in that moment.”
Chris’s hand backed away from the radio knob and went back on the wheel. “It’s a good thing we found you when we did. Without you, I don’t think we would’ve been able to stop uroboros and Wesker.”
A tear streaked down Jill’s cheek, completely disregarding his words. “You know how many innocent people I killed or infected and felt nothing.”
“You had no control; it wasn’t you.” Chris tried to defend her actions, but Jill didn’t agree, shaking her head at his response.
“No, it was me. My finger pulled the trigger. My hands attacked you. I remember all of it, Chris.” Her voice trembled. “I remember looking at you and knowing exactly who you were.” Jill swallowed the lump in her throat. “And I still tried to kill you.”
“Jill—”
“I know what you're going to say.” She shook her head, already hearing what Chris had to say, knowing he was going to repeat himself. “That I wasn't myself. That Wesker controlled me. That there was nothing I could do.” Her eyes lowered to her hands. “I don't know how many people were involved; I don't even remember what all I did while I was under his control. And that's the part that scares me.”
There was a moment of silence between them, neither one of them knowing what to say, but when the words came to Chris’s head, he flickered his gaze back over to her. “I've spent years thinking I should've done more to save people. People died because we weren't fast enough. Because we didn't know enough. Because somebody wasn’t fast enough to save their partner.” He took a pause for a breath. “If I started blaming myself for every single thing that happened because of this job, I'd never be able to get out of bed.”
Jill looked over at him and watched him quietly.
“I'm not going to let you handle this burden alone.” Chris reaches over, grabbing her hand. “We will get through this together.” His thumb brushed small circles on top of her skin.
“I missed you.” She whispers as a tear falls off the bridge of her nose, landing on the back of his hand, where she quickly wipes it off.
“I missed you more.” Chris said back in a soft chuckle, feeling her rub the tear off his hand. Jill couldn’t help but chuckle at herself, smiling for the first time in years as she tried to hide it by looking back out the window, but Chris caught it, and he was glad he did.
JILL: Listen. I'm gonna be alright. You two need to stop him.
CHRIS: We can't just leave you here!
JILL: You have to! This is your only chance! If Wesker succeeds, Uroboros will be spread across the globe! Millions will die!
CHRIS: Well yeah, but--
JILL: I'm all right! You need to stop him!

"...standing in the dark wearing nothing but honesty, jill could feel his jaw clenching against her temple, his breath stirring her hair. the only one who'd dug through a three-year tunnel full of dead leads and an empty grave and the whole world telling him no, jill is gone, chris, let it go — and still came to take her home.
now she was home, in his arms, with her hand gripping his, his heartbeat thumping against her chest and a long-kept confession he was trying to hold back, the words catching in a broken, uttered syllable of her name; and all she could think was say it — say it, whatever it is, ruin us, I don't care. please don't stop, don't stop, hold me until i feel whole again."
