    “I’ve been busy–actually, probably as much as YOU have, hm?”

    Ever since the attempted arrest of Joseph and him declaring The Reaping to begin, it felt like John’s world had kicked up in a flurry of activity. As it stood, none of it GOOD. With the resistance gaining a foothold and John losing his grip on the valley, it was getting all the more DIFFICULT to push beyond the whisper at the back of his mind. The one that begged him to disregard Joseph’s warning. That there was too much for her to ATONE for and he certainly found himself losing the thin PATIENCE he had with he situation the more people turned up at his door to tell him of the latest resistance movements.

    That RAGE was hard to hide, it leaked out in a tension of his tone but John managed to keep his tone even as he let out a steadying breath. As much as he had to unclench his jaw to do so.

    “I wonder when the jokes will stop, deputy, because I can assure you there will be LITTLE to laugh about if you keep on the path you’re on. I can promise that.”

    He knew he shouldn’t reply, just let him make his quips. John had dealt with MANY types of people since arriving in Hope County–it came with the TERRITORY. He wasn’t exactly regarded with the warmest of welcomes sometimes. Especially these days. Still, despite the rather blank stare he returned with, a small grin crossed his face after a few moments. It was a particularly soulless gesture–tight and didn’t touch his eyes.

    “I have never heard that one before. What playground did you pick it up from?”

    He could piece that together.

    It was interesting–John liked to think he could get a read on people, and there were certainly times where he COULD. He could pick up on (and pick apart) people’s secrets, figure out their SINS. Yet, it was always something when they wore them so proudly that he didn’t really need to do much thinking on that. Yet, that only just meant it ran DEEPER. A poison that ran so deep that it was hard to cut completely out, he knew that INTIMATELY. (The evidence of his own sins not being completely absolved reflected in the dried blood on the floors of his bunker, but it was a fact that sat unacknowledged in him at the moment.)

    “And you don’t worry that PRIDE won’t ruin everything you claim to have?”

    His voice was like nails on a chalkboard in that moment.

    Really, John figured it could have been Joseph standing before him, but Jacob was always a bit of a SURPRISE. He didn’t want to say he avoided his older brother, but with him running his program in the mountains and John dealing with people down in the valley, it wasn’t like they had much TIME to cross paths these days. Still, he couldn’t help but run a quick hand through his hair, slowing in his stressed pacing as he let out a BITTER huff.

    It was hard not to feel the PRESSURE to make sure he was doing what he needed–especially when John in particular didn’t have the PATIENCE for long-term struggling. It sat in his shoulders, in his jaw and neck, and in the way his nails dug into the palms of his hands in the current moment.

    “If I did, this conversation would be very different,” John replied, “I’m sure you didn’t come down from the mountains to GLOAT–can I help you with something, Jacob?”

    It had been a while since John had last seen her.

    She had been still a kid back then, he and his family just NEWCOMERS to the county at that point. Joseph had his plans, of course, and John had just been coming clean from his drug addiction–it was a BLURRY memory, one that faded into the back of his mind like so many others. Yet, he definitely knew her face. Friendly and curious–far from the way she looked at him now, still remaining on her parents property despite the fact that John had bought it out for Eden’s Gate once her parents joined.

    “You will soon,” John stated, stepping closer to her as he spoke, “Joseph wants to help lead you to a new beginning, one that is fast approaching. It’s not too late. Your parents made their choice, you can still join them, Itsuki.”
