OnS Theories (10S). Second Theory -Â The deal between Shikama and Shinoa
I know readers are distressed, but letâs keep up with the theories shall we?Â
As many saw in the chapter, Shinoa managed to return back but of course her body had slight changes since she now has to control the power of the First Progenitor, which only clears one thing, Shikama did fulfill his promise about showing Shinoa about his past.
But, why do I state that?
To begin with, Shinoa remembered Rigr after Guren used the sinful keys and got control of her body again; thus it means either she could see what Shikama was doing or, Shikama did show her a part of his memories.
Now, is there a reason in particular for this?
For now, it is uncertain what he really seeks; it is clear he needs a vessel to reside in, but at the same time, heâs overprotective of his vessel, he knows Shinoaâs body condition and is aware that if he ends up going full strength, sheâll likely break, therefore, there are still mysteries the story needs to cover up in order to understand what the First Progenitor truly seeks.
But, returning to the main topic of this theory, Shikama Doji seemed to gain self control when Shinoa commanded him to get a hold from the building, after power was released, Shikama started to drag Shinoa, making at the end the whole Shinoa squad fly for brief seconds which was sightly hilarious given the situation.
To begin with, this can only reflect one thing, Shikama Doji is likely to regain control after being sealed within Shinoa, this means, it is just a matter of time until he manages to start taunting Shinoa again; but, at the same time, itâll seem more difficult for him, since the main point of the sinful keys is to actually seal him in one sole body instead of allowing him roam other bodies or hosts.
Therefore, what kind of deal would Shikama offer to Shinoa?
Returning Mikaâs physical body
Knowing that Shinoa treasures Yu with selfless feelings, it is possible Shikama will attempt to taunt Shinoa with that, to offer a deal for her in order to return Mika to life or have him being in body and flesh making this going into a certain deal.
Though, as much as it sounds nice as an offer, thereâs one problem as well, and one of them is the main goal of Mikaâs âdeathâ. The reason of his sacrifice is to teach Yu a lesson, and breaking or tearing apart that lesson would make it have less sense or relevance.
    2. The secrets and key for humanity to succeed on returning
As we can see, Shikama is extremely powerful and it is likely that theyâll fight against the final enemy to detone the final piece for the resurrection, therefore, how exactly would Shikama benefit from this?
To begin with, heâs aware that humans are fighting to restore the world, and humbly, it seems he doesnât mind that humans are restoring the world since he pretty much enjoys playing as God, but, at the same time, heâs aware that it is likely that the humans will push their limits to fight and win for the world therefore, now knowing heâs sealed within Shinoa, it is highly possible that his final offer is to actually guide the humans on how to recover the world for humanity; it might be one of the biggest offer he has to give towards Shinoa; and Shinoa herself is aware that everything the squad wants is to revive their loved ones, which is likely theyâd end up making a deal which could consist on this:
âThe key to restore the world at the expense of oneâs freedomâ
Shikama is well known to be trickish, smart, overconfident, arrogant, and extremely powerful, but one thing is for sure, he does fulfill his promises.
What do you think? Do you think itâs likely heâll put up a trick for this?
Let me know!!
@capriva what do you think?
Future theories after chapter translation
Hey guys, since many are still shocked by the spoilers, I'll share with you the theory titles I came up with; therefore, let's mention these titles
First Theory - The reason behind Mika's transformation
Second Theory - The deal between Shikama and Shinoa
Third Theory - Yu's lesson
Fourth Theory - Project Michaela
Fifth Theory - Escape from the progenitors
Sixth Theory - Guren's goal
These are the current titles of the theories I'll update tomorrow, if the official translation holds more, I'll update more theories.
As usual, there will be an analysis about the chapter, of course, it'll be held within a neutral view which means, ships aren't involved.
Official cover, Owari no Seraph Vol. 20
Cheers!!
OnS Theories (S7). Fourth Theory - Vampire progenitors resolution and Krulâs possible secret unfold
Hello guys! Itâs been a while and I apologize again about it. I had a surgery and thankfully it wasnât serious; nevertheless, it had to be done and well, Iâve been on recovering mode Now that I have free time and Iâm able to handle the weight of my device, letâs keep up with some new theories, thoughts and analysis about all that has gone through our fave story.
For all that, letâs begin!
Thanks to all the mess that has gone through both chapters 85 and 86, we can have a better idea of whatâs been happening around the progenitors head.
First of all; we know that whatever information Krul shared with Urd, Ky and Lest is deeply related with the memory fragment they gave in chapter 85 which refers to Ashera, Yu, Noya and Krul finding the body of the first progenitor; it is likely that this memory fragment gave away information about how Yu was able to live through those years and how they experimented on him until the current Yu managed to grow, managed to have a soul.
But, thereâs something that most readers are not seeing; what might that be? Of course, the punishment.Â
By punishment, what do I mean?
To begin with, Sika Madu was aware of everything that happened within all the vampires he sired; he was aware about the inner curiousity everyone had along those who were deeply loyal to him. Within chapter 85, Krul and Ashera got bothered when Noya cut Yuâs head and the reasons are mainly because they got human hearts, what do I mean? Simple, they retained emotions, they didnât think that killing would be entretaining, they were simple kids; compared to Noya, it seemed that his life wasnât sweet but instead he was used to it; but returning to the topic, whenever they killed a Yu, Sika Madu would notice the course of actions; therefore it is likely that Sika Madu guessed and punished Ashera, Krul and Noya in a way for entering into a forbidden chamber.
Why do I state the punishment on the first place? Taking a solid reference to chapter 68, Krul stated sheâd share details of what the first progenitor did to her and her brother; which is likely life wasnât sweet compared to Rigr and Urd along the other vampires that eventually joined them.
To all of this, what does this have to do with the other progenitors resolution?
First of all, we spotted that in chapter 75, the vampired headed off to Shibuya in order to reach the First; but with what intention? what did they have in mind?
First of all, they seek answers, they do still have attachment to the one who sired them, which is something natural in a vampireâs nature thanks to all the daddy issue we saw between Rigr and Sika along Ferid with Rigr.
Urd and comany arenât likely to return to Sikaâs side specially since heâs asleep for the time being again though; it is likely theyâll be able to find where his current location is thanks to the outcome of the battle between Sika, Rigr and Guren.
It is possible that the vampires will kill the remaining humans as one of the possible options taking in consideration how far the human experiments have gone; it is possible that theyâll seek the answers they need through any methods; or, in a possible scenario, theyâd seek to put an end to everything that doomed humanity along their curse to find the well desired dead they long seek.
What do you think guys!!

As of late, I've been addicted to this beautiful OST from Fire Emblem Three Houses.
It is a wonderful game I received last year, and the stories are pretty good, just like character designs, OST, graphics, etc.

Vampires, Demons, and Angels
Iâm tagging @lostsoulaltair in this hot take because I want to know your opinion on this (if youâve covered this already I apologize, I donât remember or I missed any post about it)
This was actually from my other post, but it got kinda further away into another subject, so Iâm slapping it in its own post.
âŠOn the subject of demons: Since Rigr is making himself full of demon curse, and we can assume Yuu may or may not be made of the same material, then what about the demons in the weapons? Were they some of the most successful of Sikaâs experiments, which is why they ended up as they have? Sika said himself that there are no such thing as âdemonsâ in the world, and that he created âHellâ himself while experimenting.
With that in mind, we also do know that the names of âdemonâ weapons are mythological beings in Buddhism, most of which are deities (Yaksha, Dakini, etc.). Something they have in common aside from that is either that they are/can be benevolent or they act as guardians, which is similar to how Sika protected Shinoa when the world ended and the demons were spread to humanity as a way to protect them from the âvirusâ. Sounds vaguely similar to what an angel is supposed to be, and by now we can probably infer that the âdemonsâ are something more like âcorrupted angelsâ or something. (As if the angels in the series arenât corrupt af as it is but still.) The only one that stands out (I think) is class âBodhisattvaâ, which is actually referring to people reaching enlightenment, or working to become a Buddha rather than being a deity. (The only known Bodhisattva series weapon atm belongs to Goshi, which is ironic since his character personality trope is the laid-back monk/ex-monk type.) There are stories of Buddhas that have been mistaken as gods, which is probably the tie-in that Kagami was going for.
Though I canât actually find anything on it, Iâm assuming then that âBlack Demonsâ are a possible made-up term to describe the most successful of the series. This could be a loose reference to say that these are somewhat the equivalent of gods, or specifically âDevasâ, somewhat inferred by how Sika is referred to as one himself. (The difference being that Devas are divine beings that are closer to human nature than other beings, hence why a lot of Black Demons retain personality and some retain or can regain their memories.) So, while the other demons are in certain categories, Black Demons are loosely in reference to actual Buddhist Devas, or possibly just miscellaneous deities in general. aka, Noya could be Shiva, Byakkomaru -> Durga, Raimeki -> Radha, Mahiru -> Mahadevi, etc. [I came up with these on very little research, mind you]. Hence, the demon weapons being the most successful creations of Sikaâs, in which he almost builds his own mythologic system of higher beings known as âdemonsâ, being the opposite kinds of creatures from the angels that âseek sinnersâ rather than attempt to destroy sinners. âSinnersâ referring to human beings, but the humans are viewed differently under these two opposing mythologies. Referring back to above about the parallels between these Buddhist mythological figures and angels, the beings can be benevolent but can also have a great degree of malevolence, hence what technically could set them apart from angels into something more like what a demon would be.
However, there could also be a bit of a tie in with Hinduism, since Hindu mythology also has Devas in them, in which the Black Demons could by some of those instead. e.g., Sika -> Yama, Raimeiki -> Indra, Noya -> Chandra, Gekkoin -> Shani, etc. If weâre to classify Rigr into falling in with these guys, I might say that he could be considered to be Rahu, while Urd would theoretically be his counterpart âKetuâ. (This was also done with limited research wheeze) (If anyoneâs curious, I came up with these quick assumptions based on the characterâs name meanings and/or symbols that are closely related to them.)
I absolutely forgot what else I might have wanted to say so Iâll end this here. If I remember Iâll add it in later;;
OnS Theories (6S). Fourth Theory - The consequence of becoming a demon
Itâs been two chapters since we saw Guren becoming a demon, which means he threw away his human heart completely.
Weâve seen a merciless side of him and yet, he still cares for his squad. Of course, it will heavily depend a lot on the perspective you have on him but nevertheless, Iâm just stating what the chapter 83 gave.
But letâs begin!!
For the meantime, weâve seen Guren as thoughtful, logical and quite sadist but at the same time, heâs been in control of his actions; what do I mean?Â
Guren has been able to master the power of Noya and Mahiru within him to the point the strenght he received is under total control for now.
We saw him being able to be able to face the first with certain ease but, is that all? What will happen to his body?
To begin with, if we recall what happens when a demon or cursed gear starts taking control of a human, that person will start losing control of its body, allowing the demon to take control of it; the medicine Guren took in order to retain control of his own self no longer works like at the beginning and this was stated by Mahiru in chapter 56.
Therefore, after everything is over, it is most likely that Guren will end up losing his own self, it means that, his sanity, rationality will no longer exist even if Mahiru is restraining Noya.
Even so, thereâs another thought that crossed my mind as well, if Guren lost control, what would humanity do?
Taking in count that Gurenâs the most powerful demon right now, no one will be able to stop him unless, someone tries to do so; what do I mean?
The most logical answer to this is that his squad will try to do so but, knowing that his squad doesnât have the power, it is required to have someone with power to do so, thereforeâŠwho might perform such task to give the world the end of a âvillianâ?
Yes, some candidates for that job are:
Shinoa squad, Yuichio, the vampire progenitors and lastly Mika.
Everyone so far has shared the point of view that Guren is evil, but in fact, heâs kept hidden all the pain heâs been through but like history itself, it is required to finish those who go against humanity or seem to harm humanity or those loved ones.
Therefore, the most terrible outcome is that someone will have to finish Guren but, with what purpose?
At first, it seems crazy to do so, and being honest, I donât want him to die but taking the neutrality as always, the reason of his death might be in order to detonate the world resurrection as he always planned from the very beginning.
Is it possible?
As crazy as it sounds, it is, heâs a powerful entity right now, and to be able to perform such act, he requires the blood of a seraph, a human, a vampire and a demon. Heâs the most powerful demon so far, the result would give a higher result for the world resurrection; likewise, for many would seem like the end of a villian, for few ones, will be the hidden plan of an anti hero
What do you think?
OnS Theories (6S). Third Theory - Sika Maduâs real body or real manifestation
Well, here goes another theory guys, so far, the recent chapter was a bomb of emotions, feelings and doubts no less; something caught my eye and therefore, Iâll proceed with a new theory. Letâs start!
In the recent chapter, we saw Rigr having a conversation with Shikama, saying that Shikamaâs manifestation hasnât begun yet; which generates some doubts.Â
To begin with this, letâs talk about how Shikama works as a demon/seraph with total or absolute power:
Shikama as a demon and seraph
Shikamaâs the most powerful to no end in the whole seraph universe, to the point heâs unnerved by many threats towards him to the point he answers with a smile and a careless attitute to this.
Though whenever it came to Shinoa, more known as his host, he was serious and aware of the fact that Shinoa gained his respect to certain extend as someone with power.
To all of this, whatâs his goal by possessing Shinoa?
To begin with, letâs rewind time and remember some aspects from the story itself; we know so far that Shikama possessed each head of the Hiragi family until Tenri Hiragiâs timeline came; he made Tenri fulfill experiments in order to find a vessel for himself, what do I mean?
Along all the members of the Hiragi family, each Hiragi had a will, emotional strenght to certain extend but yet, they had desires humans tend to have or possess except for one sole person, that being Shinoa herself.
As stated by Shikama, Shinoa was the perfect result of the experiments Tenri performed in the past; he also mentioned that it was thanks to her that all the demons or more likely, the cursed gears were available for humans (yes, itâs in the light novels)
To this, we saw Shikama being the protective type with his host, but, after a long while, after he got free of Tenri, he started to be aggressive or more direct with his host or wielder of his cursed gear. But all along, returning to the question, whatâs his goal?
The answer depends a lot, one can be related to power, the second, to achieve something only Shinoa can make him achieve and no, itâs not power itself but perhaps something related with almighty but, thereâs one sole issue.
Even if he managed to possess Shinoa, Rigr made a point towards him, saying he needed to manifest his real body, by that, what does this exactly mean?
To begin with, we know that Shinoaâs body is not only capable to hold down a demon with absolute control but in fact, her body is able to retain sanity and control when it comes to the power of a seraph/vampire/demon like creature like Shikama.
What do I mean?
To begin with, Shikama before turning himself into a cursed gear, he was a seraph, thus he waited for a long time until he was able to find someone who could hide his presence from others and âfadeâ for 1000 years. After a long wait, Shinoa was born, Shikama being inside her from the very beginning until Mahiru managed to extract him in order to make Shinoa have self control of a brutal power like his.
Even so, after he managed to break free, his powers were regaining its strenght, which means, the battle he had against Rigr was only the start, he wasnât at his full strength, he was just toying around or losing his time with Rigr while he regained his strength.
Therefore, it means that, if the battle continued, he would have been able to be unstoppable. But now, returning to the question, how will he manifest himself?
Many might think that heâll find his real body somewhere else and will use Shinoa to find it but, in fact, his real body is well kept hidden deep inside of Shinoa. What does this mean or more likely, why do I state this?
To begin with, his main goal was to reach Shinoaâs heart, he wanted to gain access to her heart; which only means, that Shinoa herself, and Shikama are one entity as a whole.
Whyâs that?
When Kureto stabbed him in chapter 57, Shinoa felt the pain of Kuretoâs sword, she flinched in the place Shikama was stabbed; likewise, when Ferid was about to kill Shinoa, he quickly acted in order to defend his vessel from harm.
The vessel itself is not only for a host purpose before adquiring what he desires, instead, it is to slowly regain his flesh and body to the real world, which would be easy to say that Shinoa and Shikama would switch places.
What does this mean?
Instead of being locked in a cursed gear, Shikama would be allowed to roam freely with his own flesh by locking Shinoaâs soul deep inside of a cage just like he was locked or, simply, protecting Shinoaâs body and soul from any harm anyone could intend to do so in order to exist as a physical entity.
What do you think! Share your thoughts!!
OnS Chapter 84 - Analysis and review
Well, letâs have a small review before I proceed with other theories. First we have an scenario on which we see Ferid and Crowley talking about Rigr himself about how hard he is trying to defeat the first but, knowing Ferid, he was smart enough to tell that it wasnât Rigrâs goal completely.
We saw Guren adquiring another dagger or well known now as a sinful key. He attacked Mirai in order to do so making Kimizuki lose control along Yoichi; though Yoichi stopped Kimizuki in order to not make him throw his life in vain.
Likewise, we saw Guren heading off to face the first; the first didnât take him serious until he saw the sinful keys. There were three sinful keys in total, mainly because Guren gave one to Rigr in order to make him give them power but, as expected Rigr instead of helping, he decided to drink Gurenâs blood along his demons (Mahiru and Noya). But before he could even do it, Guren was one step ahead thus concluding the famous âbetrayalâ. He gave a signal to Ferid in order to stop Rigr proceeding to hold the first progenitor before he manifestated completely in the real world.
Now, letâs have a deep analysis to this chapter. So far, Iâve seen that many have doubtful feelings towards Guren and so on but letâs start by events that occured in the chapter.
Feridâs thoughts about Rigr
To begin with, Feridâs always given that sign of having daddy issues with Rigr but, heâs well aware that Rigr was never interested in someone he sired, instead he was interested in the powers of the first. Therefore, it is clear that Ferid is someone who doesnât enjoy to be in someoneâs plans instead the latter.
Ferid once treasured Rigr until he literally discarted him. Which is why, he always tries his best to mess up Rigrâs plans.
Kimizuki, Yoichi, Miraiâs fate and Guren
The chapter indeed held strong feelings when readers saw Guren stabbing Mirai in order to adquire a sinful key. Kimizuki with a normal response, he decided to allow his demon consume him, though Yoichi stopped him before he did something lethal to his own self.Â
Though, Guren told Yoichi about his wise decision and even told him to pick the bodies and leaveâŠGuren ended provoking him. Allowing Yoichiâs demon enter in action mainly for the lies theyâve been living up to.
Though, Is Guren telling the truth?
First, Guren is indeed telling the truth about Tomoeâs body, he might have mocked about it but, Gurenâs been a good liar but as some say, some lies hide the truth.
Guren did warn Kimizuki that he was going to kill his sister, but why? why warn him about that action?Â
NOTE: Iâm not justifying Gurenâs actions, it depends a lot of the readers about how they see him.
To begin with, Kimizukiâs been awfully honest when it came to his sister, he wouldnât allow anyone to hurt her which is sweet to no end. Therefore, if Guren came by and tell him that he wanted a dagger inside his sister, would Kimizuki have agreed to help out?
No, of course not, for him the most treasured person is Mirai and has always been her. Heâd do many things in order to keep his sister safe, therefore, instead of kidnapping or doing anything else to Mirai, he warned him about his actions, knowing that the latter would lose control and make Yoichi stop him.
Therefore, is Mirai dead?
It is hard to tell but I humbly believe sheâs not dead. Why?
To answer that question, Iâll retord to another question. What happens to the human side of a person who ends up transforming into a seraph?
Yep, that person loses its humanity. Miraiâs transformation happpened three times. A person who accepts or embraces the destructive power of a seraph loses its humanity. Which is something that happened to Yu. At first he was close to lose control and rationality, thus allowing the seraph side of him to destroy humanity but, Asuramaru was there. The same case goes with Mirai.
The first time Mirai was used as a seraph (Sorry even if it sounds awful it is true, she was used) was in Nagoya, the second time in the vampire capital Sangiem; the third time was when Kureto faced Tenri, his father in order to destroy the old system that ruled humans.
Therefore, thereâs a huge possibility that Miraiâs not dead. Indeed, he removed the sinful key but he did not destroy Miraiâs heart in order to do so. Therefore, it is a possibility sheâs alive.
But then, why taunting Yoichi?
Along the squad, Yoichiâs a person who cares about his friends even if he hides secrets. Even so, the fact he saw Kimizuki suffer, seeing Mirai laying down in the floor, the fact that Guren mentioned his sister, it was a huge bomb for him.Â
Yoichiâs been delicate when it came to his sister but then again, why saying that his sister is in the basement?Â
To begin with, it is possible that Gurenâs last movement before truthfully dying is to detonate a world resurrection; thus, he has given them a bitter hope to forge a new future without him.
Sinful keys, where did Rigr adquire two and from whom?
To begin with, we saw in chapter 68 that Rigr managed to adquire two sinful keys. Iâll develop a theory for this, but thatâll be later. At first glance, it makes people think that there were more seraphs out there, but if we recall that those involved in the experiments for the seraph of the end are the main characters.
It can be concluded that once the experiments were successful back prior to the catastrophe, Rigr removed those sinful keys from Kimizuki and Yoichi, which would actually explain why they werenât able to transform into seraphs or more likely as to why Guren never gave them a special drug to turn them in seraphs like Yu.
Now, the third sinful key came from Mirai, the other sinful key that Ferid had came from the mysterious boy and lastly, where are the other 3 sinful keys?
Thatâs pretty easy, one is inside Mahiru, the second is inside Yu and lastly the third one is inside Mika no less but as I said, this will be a well explained theory in the future.
Mahiru and Gurenâs real missionÂ
As I stated in a previous theory, Guren and Mahiruâs main focus were saving the world, forging a future for humankind and the most important thing, giving Shinoa the opportunity to be human. Why did Mahiru do many stuff? Simple, she wanted to give her sister a future on which she didnât have to harbor a beast. ButâŠsadly, the beast inside and the title of the newest chapter, it just gives emphasys that Shinoa and the First have more in common than they can think about.
Outcome of the chapter
Everything was left in a cliffhanger, of course, we canât tell if Rigrâs dead or badly injured to die but, it is possible that heâs still alive, just like the first. The first hasnât been completely defeated, he was sealed for the moment. Therefore, the outcome for Shinoa might be her losing her memories of everything.
That will be explained as well in a theory.
Gurenâs future
Guren has no future. He gave up everything in order to give humans the opportunity to stop being puppets of the first, even if he had to take the dark path, even if he had to take the clothes of the villian. The fact that heâs going to die can cover many scenarios, to a battle with Rigr, a battle with the first, a battle against Mika or a battle against Yu.
It is hard to tell the outcome but those are headcanons so far.Â
What do you think?
Let me know!!
P.S = Iâm not defending Guren or anything. This is merely an analysis therefore, Iâm not saying heâs right but at the same time, heâs not completely wrong.
Auteur Theory about Lino Brocka Films: Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag & Insiang
Auteur Theory about Lino Brocka Films: Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag & Insiang A Movie Review for Film Language, Midterms Part 1. Â Introduction & Auteur Theory
Catalino Ortiz Brocka a Filipino film director who made an amazing amount of recognitions as well as several types of film that becomes outstanding later on the awarding because of how he handled and manipulated his creations to provide deep meaning, intention and was they were later showed on as a movie especially during the Marcos era. Lino Brocka from his films latter inspires youths as you keep watching the films that he made, watching films again and again can let you see that the movie is telling you something. He was an intentional film maker when he created his films and you can tell from the way he directed his films meaning, there are actors that are only prescribe to his films over and over again starring his films without any difficulty and the repeating patterns from the casts to who it dedicates to could be seen from every part of his films. His films created in the 90âs are the types of films that has several dictations and they have a flow in their parts, not just your typical shake, rattle, roll series meaning, the film he creates has context, literally you just do not stare at the cinema just to see how the movie comes and goes you somehow become intrigued and mold yourself if you were in their shoes what would you do, how will you survive in those situations. Itâs one of those movie directors that gives emphasis on what reality can do to you and how your mindset will be evolving of, but that is if you had not watch the film he makes yet. Youâll end up beguiled and unexpectedly want to change the fate of the protagonistâs choices and ended up doing it for them in your seats. The way he writes his scripts are unimaginable meaning, you wonât know what will happen next, you think that the characters will obviously do that, but only ending up doing other decisions that you have not thought of. You never expect a Filipino to get these kinds of achievement in life, a wise and cunning tactic he had created to hide the root of his intended target for his films. People like Lino Brocka do not often appear much like the creators of this generation, yes some current directors can satisfy the wants of millennial youths with their genres but the agenda to that is how the directors will be able to actually satisfy the mind of the youths into understanding the factual truth of todayâs actualization like how Lino Brocka was able to confidently hide his true message to the masses much more to the President Marcos back then which he was attacking the system of President Marcos because of how he was handling the country and itâs fellow citizens with communism, the difficulty of being able to provide and be provided is thought to be simpler with Marcos as the leader thinking that heâd do great things, which in some ways President Marcos did but the citizens were never satisfied with anything for the pain and suffering were the cries and that made Lino Brocka think that maybe heâd create something for fun but with realization of the countries situation that is how amazing Lino Brocka was and his mindset for every film remained the same and still sane for all he could use his skills was to announce to the public that are qualified enough to understand his films to shout the prejudice of many Filipinos.
Maynila sa mga kuko ng Liwanag
Filipinos from the early centuries in our country had this vague and risky thoughts that going and longing for Manila can make all wishes happen, from being poor to rich, uneducated to educated, goals to achievements. Filipinos out righted told themselves that Manila Is considered as the tome of âhopeâ for everyone. You can change and could be anything you want to be that you dreamt of since you were little. Whatâs sad is that the most affected Filipinos were the ones living in the provincial area because all the ones who can buy anything are settled immediately in Manila and tend to over crowd the sanctum and dirtying the vicinity with all their seven deadly sins mixed in one point, working hard to earn income and selling their souls to the corporates becoming a slave to let only one reach the highest summit in human satisfactory to hierarchical status, in which should be the opposite. Provincial Filipinos should be the one earning the highest income of all especially in the agricultural course because of how they handle to soil to the sea and so on, they should be the one receiving all the merit and further enhance the country with their efforts, but of course, they are belittled and scammed at thinking that their efforts were all easy as one, two, and three and therefore should be considered as the lowest importance of the human needs. The introduction of industrial mindset has officially  decrease the intellectual of few modern Filipinos because of how they treat others as competition and forgetting that they are Filipinos to other Filipinos too, but of course the society rule was bound to happen either way and there is no escape. Manila a word to sought their dreams and goals in life to remove inequality and disregard their harsh life for their selves or their family, or so they thought and later on regret and lose confidence of their humanity, values, and morals in life and later on fell into despair. The youths are taught that everything in Manila is heaven while those living in Manila thinks everything in Manila is hell. Well to understand ones suffering one must go through it and let the cycle continuously drive us all insane over and over again. Once entered the hell hole called âManilaâ they later on regret how dreadful the municipality is and will be of in the near future, even now âManilaâ has never changed it ways. Lino Bracko who directed this theorizing film made it obvious what Manilaâs situation in worst cases the deepest part of the disgusting area too. Now from the film, simple two love birds that was denied by fate because of one simple contract by their lack of suspicion and knowledge of strangers. Julio the innocent young man from a certain barrio near the shores to fish as his livelihood that has a girl friend named Ligaya whom also comes from the same barrio that Julio grew up from saying that they were childhood buddies. But one day their fate changes, from an unknown woman suddenly appearing in front of Liagayaâs house and saying that she is in need of new beautiful lady recruits that is able to work and tend to the need of their orders from the one recruiting them. Julio insists to not go they do not know of her and unsure of her legality to recruit members, but for Ligaya it was like a chance to go to Manila and seek help to assist for her family and as well as Julio for their future to marry and so on hearing that Julio has no choice but to accept the decision of Ligaya for it was a chance as well to live to a better life then after Ligaya went to say farewell to all her dear love ones. Later on, months passed that the mother received a later that the unknown woman apologizes for Ligayaâs disappearance for she stole a jewelry and ran away which was written in the letter, they were all dismayed and saddened by what happened to Ligaya. But, Julio thought that Ligaya could never do such a thing and therefore realized that thereâs something wrong with what the letter was trying to say. As Julio packed his things to recollect where Ligaya could be and find the unknown old woman that abducted and framed Ligaya for stealing then running away to be found and question her if what she says is actually the truth, while in Manila already Julio kept on standby at that certain are where he might actually conclude that Ligaya is there and therefore insisted on staying to further see. Staying in Manila, Julio worked at a construction site hoping that with the amount of money earned he might look farther to where Ligaya is, and along the way he made friends or buddies as we call them along the construction site. Further along the film, he found Ligaya by accident when sheâs on her way to the nearest church in Binondo, Manila the roughest area where no one wants to be in. Anyways, as Julio took a step closer to insure that, that really is Ligaya was to follow her onto the chambers to seat beside her as he questions her differentially unlike the norms she used to be like way back in their seashore barrio, there she looked vague with the face of awe and guilty expression she showed when Julio truly found her in the damps of Manila like a savior saving the damsel in distress. But unfortunately Ligaya refused the offer for she was clamped and cannot escape the grasp of the Chinese man that bought her to his arms and saved her from the danger of opium addiction that they give to women in prostitution. Also, Ligaya refused because with a sad news she had a child with the Chinese man that swindled and saved her, caring for her the Chinese man doesnât want to hurt her and the child as long as she follows his order in which Ligaya going insane of not knowing what to do has no choice but to follow instead, thinking that no one can save her for it was long months that she disappeared and maybe Julio already canât find her. After their long awaited reunion Julio decided to make a plan for a plot against the Chinese man and then ran away along with the child so that sheâll be away from harm and go back home, Ligaya widely hesitated because that plan doesnât work against the Chinese man and would just end up dead if the plan failed and will be jailed forever. But in the end, they still decided to come up with the idea of meeting very early so that Ligaya can escape quietly by making an excuse that sheâll go somewhere for a minute but then night falls as Julio waits across the area where Ligaya lives and was later revealed after Julio went back to his cousins place and took a drink to ease Julio after the cousin saw in the newspaper that Ligaya was already dead and doesnât want Julio to do any risky move if ever he found out of her death. Huge mistake to think that Julio will be calm after taking a drink together he went rampant and decided to take a leave to make a plan to kill the Chinese man that killed Ligaya, without the notice of the cousin. Julio filled with rage and hatred decided to buy a small icepick to use as a weapon to kill the Chinese man, as he went on in the place Ligaya used to live Julio attacked the Chinese man and as the lady beside the dead Chinese man yelled for the police to help catch Julio fleeing from the scene as they catches Julio in a dead narrow space, Julio knew that it was over the day that he decided to kill someone and accepted the fact of being left off since Ligaya whom he lives for is already gone, he fights back the mobs that is also trying to kill him but in the end he was overpowered and ends of dying being helpless because he was fueled with rage and hatred that the has done something unavoidable and unforgivable to the eyes of the society.
Insiang
Incompetency and the lack of suitable needs provided for you and your family unable to do a protest, strike, anything that you could get your hands on to let other people higher than you to hear your scream of pain and suffering from the moment you were born onto the earth and thought that your destiny rests in these slumps of greyed engraved life placed upon you by the almighty one, cursing everything on across your path hurting everyone alongside you so that you are able to not only suffer alone but at least you brought one down together with you until your very last breath to speak and shout what you want to say until it works no more and as the         time pass by you are and only one rotting heavily to your core unable to speak, hear, and move. Poverty in this film is seen as something disastrous and a stigma to all nation in the Philippines as Lino Brocka thoroughly shows the scams of the damned ones and how they are able to maintain their precious life by forcing their very best to become them until they sprout wings to be free from the shackles of an uneasy life theyâve been given. It has been long years ever since we had issues about poverty as seen from the world statistics we are closer to the graph as of now than we used to be because of the introduction of immediate Industry to every Filipinos.  If I were to describe poverty it would be a gray version of the colorful world the others have with the state of lacking and be socially accepting to have no amount of money to buy their needed material items, a scarce of life passed down to one member to another leading a domino effect of never ending darkness to the ones in front of it and inadequacy of sustenance of abundances this is how the girl from the film survived. Her name is the film itself, Insiang a woman who lacked a father leaving her mother taking care to all of them altogether with their cousins living in the house of frailty and happily joyous working together to unite and restore their former home once lost by replacing them with anew. Insiang, a daughter that grew up in labor working hard for her mother to earn by selling items that she had gathered every day to support the family. The daily struggle to earn and see how they will turn out tomorrow is like a grim fairytale for Insiang and her family not knowing what tomorrow lies for them and how it might change their life forever. Until one moment where Insiangâs mother had a fight with their cousinâs mother that made them leave the house and hate each other for it by then only Insiang and her mother living together in the house that filled them whole only by giving them now a cold shoulders every night. The next day when Insiang was carrying her heavy baggageâs to sell to the place where she goes every day thereâs this man that approached her and seems to have affection for her by trying to help her carry her items, but of course Insiang an independent woman who can totally do what sheâs told to refused the man and went away. The man looked amused and didnât further interrogate Insiang of her items. Later on the film, the news of Insiangâs mother having a sexual relationship with the young man that likes Insiang and used Insiangâs mother to get closer to her and gain her taste. WELL, further along the film we can see that because of Insiangâs mother fallen deeply in love with the man she cannot stand whenever she sees Insiang and the man together and because of that Insiang and her mother had a huge fight and later on Insiang could not stand by anymore due to her motherâs blindness and not believing her after what everything happened and only hopes that her mother would listen to her as a mother figure would do but instead all she would get is the shame and a none existent love that her mother now gives her all because of that one man who went into their lives and destroyed them both all because of greed and lust the man holds to the two used them for his own gain. Insiang going insane of not knowing who to trust and hold on anymore all alone in their own home canât do anything until her mind break and had a devious plan all the while killing all those who once loved and but now left by her because of fear and injustice understanding. In the end, Insiangâs devious and unimaginable skill of manipulating the people around her because of her sanity decreasing very low, succeeded and now the man is dead by the hands of whom her mother loved and to that also her mother went to jail by the act of killing, or we can say a homicide case that happened because of jealousy, hatred, and greed and now Insiang is free of pain and suffering and will continue to live moving forward towards her newly founded life unchained by all those that pained her from her own home making her sane once more, or so we thought. This is what poverty could do to anyone living all those misfortune life that is ahead of them, unprotected, unloved, and no trust can be found to the place that stabbed you in the back whilst living closer to them as we all thought that we are safe from harm even if itâs the slums we all live in, but in the end what kills you is the one that truly supported you since birth and all the toxicity held went on a rampage and killed the âyouâ in the final moments.

Auteur Theory about Mike De Leon Films: Batch 81ÂŽ & Kakabaka Ka Ba? A Movie review for Film Language, Midterms part 2
 Introduction & Auteur Theory
Mike De Leon a Filipino film director whom also made an amazing amount of recognitions as well as several types of film that becomes outstanding later on at the awarding because of how he was able to handle and manipulate his own imaginations and ideas that he tried to express silently that shows the interactive oppressive side of our society with his creations to provide deep meaning, intention and was they were later showed on as a movie also especially during the Marcos era too, later then proves what he is trying to tell President Marcos back then on how Filipinos are being pained during the days of his regime. From his films he then latter inspires the youths as they keep watching the films that he made, watching films again and again can let you see that the movie he makes is trying to explain or tell you something. He was an intentional, and creative as a film maker when he experimented on his films and you can tell from the way he directed his films with meaning and there are actors that are only prescribe to his films over and over again starring his films without any difficulty designating them and the repeating patterns from the casts to who it dedicates to could be seen from every part of his films. His films created in the 90âs are the types of films that has several dictations and they each have their own flows in their parts, not just your ordinary series meaning, that the film he creates has hidden agendas and he completely has control over the variables in each of the scenes and literally you just do not stare at the cinema just to see how the movie comes and goes, you somehow become intrigued and questioned that what if you were in their shoes what would you do, how will you survive in those situations. The way he writes his scripts are with the ordinary, harsh, reality life that anyone goes through and you will understand what will happen next but you wonât actually get the right concept that it will shock you and you will think that the characters will obviously do that, but only ending up doing other decisions that you have not thought of. You never expect a Filipino to get these kinds of achievement in life, a wise and cunning tactic he had created to hide the root of his intended target for his films. Mike De Leon creativity does not often appear much like the creators of this generation, yes some current directors can satisfy the wants of millennial youths with their genres but the agenda to that is how the directors will be able to actually satisfy the mind of the youths into understanding the factual truth of todayâs actualization like how he was able to confidently hide his true message to the masses much more to the President Marcos back then which he was attacking the system of President Marcos because of how he was handling the country and itâs fellow citizens with communism, the difficulty of being able to provide and be provided is thought to be simpler with Marcos as the leader thinking that heâd do great things, which in some ways President Marcos did but the citizens were never satisfied with anything for the pain and suffering were the cries and that made Mike De Leon think that maybe heâd create something for fun but with realization of the countries situation that is how amazing Mike De Leon was and his mindset for every film remained the same and still sane for all he could use his skills was to announce to the public that are qualified enough to understand his films to shout the prejudice of many Filipinos. Moreover, the films that was chosen for us to watch and critique were that of the contently the same that of Lino Brocka films that was also chosen and watched then critiqued with all the creative idea of the society in general within the Philippines no hidden secrets but actually showing the brutal side of those people with power of how much they are able to do.
 Batch 81â
Philippines of today never changes from the old times during the reigns of many Presidents that either created a havoc or do a small change of something anew in the eyes of the Filipino community way back then and it was never placed into a consideration to the heads of many members of the nation that to never forget their own rights as a human living for the betterment of their family or for themselves  to keep up to the ever growing community standards that the society gives to the people who are trying to grind their way to survival and could finally be able to catch up without anyone in peril but all we can say to see that there have been shortcuts to victory that leads the necks of others in need to their demise and despair that thought to give them a free ticket to the good pathway of the pyramid. Society the sole root of burden to those many unwanted human needs of the hierarchy where it claims to be the number one leading standards for a human to normally live and survive without any troubles and diving in to the sins of the many citizens that have sacrificed many parts of their life and soul just to be a part of the invitation to good life to get to the best service that they can experience and be at to know which ones can be the best choice for them. Hardships are seen to our every daily actions in this rugged country that was once beautiful and acknowledgeable to the eyes of foreign and local people, to work through the very top one must endure the harsh environment that they are set up on once born onto this world unless youâre one of the lucky random generated human being that has all the cheat codes enabled and got everything without doing oh, so, much to step up on the ladder of society. Issues of politicians handling these damned system is also one of the cause of hardships that we Filipinoâs are facing altogether because of the greed from the entire face point of papered accumulating finances that runs the whole wide world crazy to be rich to afford all of the materialistic totems in the manmade world we are at right now. Family a word, sentence, phrase describe to ensure the strength of trust and love placed in that word so that all will face the harsh trials without anyone dying and leaving the world beforehand while oaths are becoming an ordinary rule to let sure that everyone stays in their path and to not get lost from the road that their family leads them to be. The film Batch 81â or from its full name Alpha Kappa Omega Batch 81â sets its title from a fraternity established at a certain unnamed college university to be of assistance to incoming new students that require the need of relationship as a hood altogether to get through many tough times and ensure that all will be able to graduate and finish all the task that is given to them by the fraternity leader. The story begins with the protagonist named Sid Lucero who studies from an untold university taking the course recommended by his mother and lives near the university by boarding alongside his friend. Sid who is struggling from his daily school activities, to tardiness, from low grades and the daily struggle of an ordinary college student stigma until now and does not know what would he do just to make up for all the missed and low grade classes and canât tell his mother that he is having a trouble breaking down all the necessary goals to become studious once more to be able to finish and graduate without any problems. Alongside with his dorm mate and the best friend that he can always count on in which they both dreamt to succeed without any hardships in their path and tried to find alternatives so that they can graduate with a sweep clean and free of trouble, as they try to survey the different organizations handed out and approved by the university and there Sid ended looking up to the so called fraternities as described by the Websterâs dictionary a fraternity is a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest or pleasure such as becoming a future leader to the organization, or someone looking for a guild, and all fraternities is a men only student organization formed chiefly for social purposes having secret rites and a name consisting of Greek letters, and a student organization for scholastic, professional, or extracurricular activities like debates, sports, etcâŠmore indication of its meaning is the quality or state of being brothers or so called brotherliness and finally about the hierarchy as stated of a person in the same class. Profession, character, tastes, etcâŠand a fraternity can also be synonymy indicated as âbrotherhoodâ more or less. Moving on to the film, as Sid was looking for a group there he was handed out a paper of the ALPHA KAPPA OMEGA printouts and made a realization to see if he will decide to let this fraternity group be of aid to his academics, although innocently Sid doesnât know the true horrors behind joining a fraternity that entitles you as their brethren, yet. Unafraid and strong willed, Sid Lucero also invited his roommate best buddy to join together in the Alpha Kappa Omega fraternity so that it may be an advantage to them both academically to be known all the while in the school and enjoy the life of someone with brothers looking out for them mindset, but unknown to the horrors about to befall them just to ensure their life in the campus. The fated day for the applicants for Alpha Kappa Omega fraternity to be gathered and tested in the same day immediately, for the new applicants they are called the neophytes as stated by the Websterâs dictionary a neophyte is a novice, a new convert, fresh from the university alternative synonym for neophyte is an abecedarian or apprentice. As the neophytes gather and went inside the designated room for the application to start Sid begets and nervously went ahead like the others did, as they enter everyone lined up and was ordered to be blind folded to test their confidence and attitude in the midst of shame and trials. Many have failed and feared the ongoing tests that will later on fall upon them, letting only a few remain like Sid and his roommate buddy. Further onto the film, the new recruits along with Sid and his roommate buddy ended up in a horrible tragedy where the gang war between Alpha Kappa Omega and Sigma Omicron Sigma, another fraternity group that was angered because of Sidâs roommate friend had an affection towards the sister of the leader of Sigma Omicron Sigma but besides that another reason why the gang war actually preparedly happened because someone from Alpha Kappa Omega member died and it was Sidâs best friend that was drowned in front of him on a toilet in an abandoned place, making Sid furious and initiated their fraternity leader to start a fight to get revenge to what Sigma Omicron Sigma did to their brethren. Finalization of the film is that Sid ended up being a âmasterâ of the new recruits and handled the brotherâs rituals for new neophytes and ending up finishing his college work and many more.
 Kakabakaba Ka Ba?
Ever wondered what a broken film looks like but holds a deeper intention to the Filipino nation back then? Well, as addictions were later introduced into the industrial life of Filipino apart from the chaotic world that was given to use by adding systems that later on disrupt the many living patterns of all the people living in this county. Different race, identity, uniqueness, personality, attitude, world, interest, and many more mixing our cultures and identities sculpting our traits to be what we are being invaded on. Finding your purpose and meaning while growing into the person you want to be without any one stopping you. Having a mindset of relying to others on a higher levels like of the government to expect them to do something about this problematic chaos that everyone is expecting in which they should, which Filipinos are putting their hopes onto them and becoming more lazy that maybe someday the government will actually do something for them manually. Placing their hopes onto someone else but finding out that they will literally do nothing and deal with the nationâs political problems instead of the state the country is in. Persuading people who are unfriendly and being unaware that the environment that they are currently in endangers them to only be noticed when realization appeared and change to be more obvious to become a motivational act. Losing passion to work, not achievement your dream because of some unseen able force that makes you question your entire purpose in life because of the obscure and confusing actions that many people do to you physically, spiritually, mentally, and emotionally in which makes you become unstable and unable to create a beautiful difference in this country. Cults a secretive organization that hides their selves amongst the faces of many different people masking their true identity for a single objective or purpose to either oppress and process a destructive yet creative thinking that makes their mind become a dangerous weapon for the politicians or the government in general, exposing the different experiments and actions truer than words that speeches are shown in televisions from the press making the people confused and think that they are in the position to think that we are all living a great life where in fact that it was already stolen from us, our very existence and actions monitored as it is getting sold to the heads of the powerful people without our mentions and approval to as they continue to obstruct the very loud voices of the mass to be closed and unidentifiable forever. This is where the four protagonist from the film involved themselves into a shady people and business with an unseen trouble coming ahead of them because of a single cassette tape that was secretively placed into the first protagonistâs jacket in the airplane boarding to Manila from Japan. All the while the four protagonists that ended up meeting altogether within the plane became buddies and went to dinner, have fun, etc. Suddenly weird people from the Japan branch of cult as well as the Chinese cult wants to get their hands on the cassette tape making their lives in danger as two of the cults tries to pursue the four protagonists unknown to what the cassette hides inside its tasty melody. The four protagonists ended up to certain sites near their areas just to find clue as to what the cassette tape includes and questions why they are after this single tape when the two tried to listen to it at their home they just find a few notes but then goes blank afterwards making it a very mysterious tape for all of them who are both trying to help them and find what it truly holds inside. As they search for clues they ended up in places they thought that were safe and free of touch from the society, a church in the hills of their village and so they decided to explore the sides by disguising as nuns and pastors in practice, unknown to them that the nuns are immediately conspicuous of them and tries to get away with a scent of glare in their eyes to the four protagonists, there they explores the sides to see if one gets to find something like a hidden switch or something that could access into another spot within the vicinity of the church inside or out. No more, no less further along in the film they ended finding a secret door leading to an elevator giving a secret code for the members to enter, spying there they knew the code and went to the elevator going to the basement along with the Chinese cult. There they saw the mastermind of all their troubles and screams, it was a Japanese master the head of all troubles that theyâve been facing and to their addition knowledge it was he who created the cassette tape that holds the ingredients in creating an unending source of opium more likely drugs and other paraphernalia for them to never stop indulging and continue to process and send out by selling making them rich and in control of all the business happening around Asia, like trading pointing out that they are powerful and will continue to reign. But in the end of the invitation of choirs and comediatic pauses the evil doers are always caught and jailed for the crimes and wanted images that they are with their sentenced spoken and the four protagonists ended up helping with a great term and all of them ended up having the nice time of their lives once more and the four of them got married where the action and catching happened, under the hidden area of the church.

Film 1 â LSS: Last Song Syndrome
From the creators of First Day High, My Amnesia Girl directed by Jade Castro presents a runner up film from the PPP or Pista Ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019 celebrating the 100th cinema viewing in our country presents LSS or Last Song Syndrome, starring Gabbi Garcia as Sarah and Khalil Ramos as Zak, a film that heartbreaks and hardships intertwine that gives inspiration, chase-your-dream-teen, romance, family lesson, and the important theme of this theme revolves around music. Music that creates or gives connection to everyone you meet throughout your entire life. Music that sends you to a different dimension changing your entire being into another you. Music that affects your spirit lifting you to a higher ground relating to what you feel towards your unending journey to an unknown place.
The morning starts with Zak going to commute on his way to visit his crush while holding the precious gifts that he will deliver for her to admire and to try understanding Zakâs feeling towards her best friend. To which he tries his best to court her but ends up failing otherwise because of her having sudden surprise relationships that he was not able to relay her emotions towards her and canât find any will to confess.
As they both end up in the same place of transportation area, Sarah was able to spot Zak unknowingly because they both ended up singing the tune played in the film. After awhile of finding seats among the crowded people, Sarah and Zak was able to sit together during the trip. They both introduced that they like the same band and idolises Ben & Ben then after, they both told each other their dreams and goals in life wherein Sarah wanted to be a composer of music and that she also joined the music camp back then but wasnât chosen and thus decided to try harder for them to notice her and then saving their family of hardships and to finally attain her goal in life. While Zac introduced Ben & Ben too, saying his dream to become a producer and saying that his away from his father, living with his mother when he was young.
After all those confrontations and chat they heavily went onto a deep conversation wherein Zak decided to give his empty disk then after wrote Sarahâs first lyric onto the disk with a permanent marker making her more inspired and to not give up on her dreams and goals in life. While for Zak, after all those confrontations and confidence he decided to put up all of his courage and would confess to her best friend so that sheâll finally understand his feelings for her. The two promised to meet each other again at the latter date gig of Ben & Ben. With the trip ending, their conversations were like a glimpse of what it would feel like for their dreams to be achieved and prosper together with their loved ones. But taking a look on their backs as they go in their separate ways apart from the bus that theyâve enjoyed their moments felt that they were destined and was fated to meet to change their entire aspect of life and that they would go higher to achieve their goals and never stop believing into something they can do.
For Sarahâs side of the story further in the film at one point Sarah ended up fired for all the hard work sheâs putting up for to let her brother to graduate already but has no choice but to find another job and since her dream is to become a composer but for now toss all dreams aside for the ones you love to support them until they are able to walk on their on steps. But along the way, when the moment that all earned cash for Sarahâs brothers graduation gift was used to buy an expensive branded shoes Sarahâs brother confessed that all of the earned money that Sarah gives to him to be used for the tuition fees as well as the miscellaneous expenses that the school gives but all went to fund his band studio and said that he stopped coming to school ever since and that made Sarah literally broke down and tried to quell her anger upon her younger brother because she knew that as someone as herself achieves to reach and feel her dreams but has to sacrifice, she understood that if it is for her brotherâs goal so be it, so she finds another place to work.
Along the way of the two protagonists, Sarah and Zak had gone into a breaking moment that they were both fated to meet at a bar where Ben & Ben will have their gig, there along the crowds full of surprises and endless stream of mixed emotions Sarah and Zak met in the middle of the fans while tearing and crying, looking at each other pretending to not notice the whole crowd going wild for cheering not realizing that Sarah and Zac is behind them going closer to each other wanting to hold each other trying to understand each otherâs pain and suffering, until the two Sarah and Zac could reach each other like a dream of wanting to see and know how they ended up going at the same venue, getting closer to each other together with time slowing down as if fate led them together as both of them went nearer giving them their very special moment until they had their first kiss, giving a sign of their affection to each other that the perfect moment was now.
Film 2 â The Panti Sisters
The Panti Sisters is a Filipino comedy film directed by Jun Lana, starring Paolo Ballesteros as Gabriel, Martin del Rosario as Daniel, and Christian Bables as Samuel. It premiered during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019, and has won several awards, thus extending its release in local cinemas. Aside from the Audience Choice Award, the picture won Best Production Design Award and del Rosario won as Best Actor.
The Panti Sisters consist of Gabriel, Daniel, and Samuel who have discovered their homosexuality at their young ages, but were not supported by their controlling father, Don Emilio y Panti (starring John Arcilla). At the start of the film, Gabriel hops off a jeepney, returning to their patriarchal house after years of being in exile. Reuniting with her parents and her sister Daniel, Gabriel asks their father what is the reason that they were both summoned. Their stepsister Samuel and her mother Vilma Panti were also in attendance, much to Nora Pantiâs dismay over seeing her husbandâs mistress.
It was then revealed through numerous flashbacks that all of them have received cold treatment from their father that they have never considered returning to their home. Samuel had longed to meet her father, as she never grew up close to him. For a comedic film, their journey as homosexuals were at best, sad and very timely to the Philippine societyâs acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community. Don Emilio then revealed that he was about to die from cancer, and he is willing to give his 300-million-peso inheritance to his children fairly, but under one condition.
With Don Emilio disagreeing with the sistersâ gender identity, he challenged them that the only way they could get their share of 100 million pesos each is to give him a grandchild before he dies. Much to the sisterâs surprise, they jumped to the deal, with Vilma being completely supportive of Samuel impregnating Chiqui, a childhood friend, for the sake of getting monetary benefits from Don Emilio. Gabriel, at first, hesitated, but when her friend Kat decided to help him out, he gave in to the deal. Daniel wasnât about to jump to the challenge, but after rescuing a pregnant neighbor named Joy from her abusive boyfriend, they made a deal to claim that Joyâs child was Danielâs instead.
When Chiqui, Kat, and Joy all presented to Don Emilio as pregnant with his grandchild, he still doubted the authenticity of it, so he ran DNA tests to them in order to ensure the kids have Panti genes in them. Kat was indeed pregnant, but she wasnât sure if his ex-boyfriend or Gabriel was the father. Chiqui was pregnant too, but she agreed to do it with Samuel with believing Samuel loves her the way she loves Samuel. After reuniting with some old family and friends and a friendly volleyball match, in which the sistersâ cousins mock their sexuality, Chiqui found out that Samuelâs main reason for conceiving a child with her was out of dire need for financial gain.
This resulted in a spat between the two, but Chiqui had a miscarriage, in which the sisters felt the true weight of this challenge. Samuel came to her senses about this, and amid his motherâs insistence, he backed out of the deal, especially when Don Emilio didnât even visit the hospital to mourn for his lost grandson. Don Emilio also found out that Joyâs child wasnât Danielâs, also Katâs child. Both disheartened at their fatherâs demands, they ran away along with their mother Nora.
After fixing up bad blood with one another, Daniel and Gabriel decided to patch up things together with their stepsister Samuel. One night after bonding together as three sisters, they were faced with trouble. Several men attacked them in the parking area, but they didnât win over the sistersâ innate martial arts skills. Leaving Daniel alone, she was faced with another group of men, seeking revenge over their defeat. This time, however, they brought a gun with them, and shot Daniel without any hesitation. It was too late when the sisters found her; she was already dead from a bullet through her chest.
On Danielâs funeral, which was all pink instead of the traditional neutral color scheme, Don Emilio was still hesitant to show his love to his children, in which both Samuel and Gabriel have accepted. However, days after burying Danielâs body, Don Emilio visited her grave, much to the surprise of the sisters. He then confessed that he had been too hard on them, that the reason for his rough upbringing is that he loves his children so much, and now he is ready to accept his surviving children with all his heart. The tearful family hugged each other, signifying their reunion as one family, and Don Emilio now allows his daughters to call him âPapaâ.
The film ends in Katâs and Gabrielâs wedding, that, despite Gabrielâs gender identity, she chose to be a âsecond fabulous momâ to Katâs unborn child and that they will raise the kid together. The cast takes some photos, with Gabriel and Samuel of course, stealing the spotlight one last time.
The Panti Sisters is a refreshing take on typical Filipino films that has homosexual, flamboyant characters, in which Vice Ganda (Jose Viceral) often takes the centerstage. Sure, the color schemes are often bright, vibrant, even trippy at times, but it masks the darkness that the conflicts and the issues of the film. The comedic relief makes it easier to tackle the serious issues, yet The Panti Sisters had scenes wherein the message was delivered in an obvious manner. Jun Lana couldâve done this intentionally to avoid confusion among its target audience, the masses.
The film tackled on a lot of issues that it failed to give proper nods and spotlights to some of the scenes, and without the makeup and the slapstick comedy, Gabriel, Daniel, and Samuel would stay as one-sided characters with stereotypical personalities. Putting it aside however, the film featured wonderful production designs that catches the attention of its viewers. The Panti Sisters also highlights empowerment of people from the LGBT community, breaking away from the barriers that homosexuals are physically and mentally weak. It also shows women empowerment and the effects of toxic patriarchal culture and sexism of the Philippines.
The Panti Sisters is a representation of what the LGBT community wants the rest of the Filipinos to see, not just for the sake of comedy and their entertainment. Through this film, Filipino traits were highlighted both in a good and bad way, which is a wakeup call for all of the masses. Lana emphasizes the negative effects of having an overly-dominant figure in the household, as it stunts the emotional growth of young children. It resulted in an emotionally-constipated family that they only came around when theyâre missing one Panti. Hence, albeit being a homosexual-themed film, The Panti Sisters gives emphasis on the importance of acceptance and and love from the family first.
Film 3 â Lola Igna
Lola Igna is a 2019 Philippine film directed and written by Eduardo Roy, Jr., and was one of the entries for Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino 2019. It stars Angie Ferro as the titular character and Yves Flores as his great-great-grandson. It was released last September 12, 2019, which is close to the celebration of Grandparents Day. The film was a great success as it received generally positive reviews from critics, even snagging Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Musical Score, and Best Actress for Ferro. Due to high demand from the public, it extended its release in commercial and independent cinemas across the country until October 3rd, 2019 in UP Film Institute and Cinema â76.
Lola Igna follows the story of Igna, a 118-year-old woman who is leading a simple life by herself in the rice fields. The film starts with a shot of her waking up, peeing on a pot, scaring away the birds from her farm using stringed tin cans, and cooking adobong kangkong for breakfast with a mug of tuba (coconut wine), in which she takes time to talk to a framed photo of her husband, Carias. Igna already shows signs of longingness to die the moment she buried a dead bird she found in her farm; even congratulating the bird that it had died, and wished its luck as the bird travels in the other life. Albeit a sweet, sentimental scene that recurs in multiple parts of the film, it is obvious that the flying birds are computer-generated. For the untrained eye, it retains its sentimental message, yet if you spot the artificial birds flying around while the cans clang against each other, it showed some form of comedic relief.
Unlike other Filipino films that âglorifiesâ poverty so much, Roy has found the perfect balance of portraying poverty in a way it does not fetishize the idea of being poor in the Philippines. Instead of focusing on the economic status of the main characters, through its camera angles and mostly-silent scenes, Roy showed the audience how Igna is content in such a solitude as she waits (rather impatiently) for her death to arrive. Her relatives then arrive in her humble hut, telling her to get ready to meet the mayor. Igna was hesitant, amid Nidaâs coaxing, and she refuses to wear the dress that her great-granddaughter, Ana, left inside her cabinet. The red dress, according to Igna, is the one she wants to wear for her funeral.
After dressing up in a simple white ensemble, Igna jokingly tells Nida that her makeupâs fitting for her funeral, which Nida frowned upon. After all, Igna is one of the candidates for the longest-living grandmother not only in the Philippines, but the whole world by an organization named Amazing People of the World. Upon meeting the mayor, it was made clear that when Igna gets the title, she will be awarded $50,000 for every living year she already passed, giving a total of $5.9M. Obviously, the mayor and Nida are both invested in keeping Igna alive, even if the mayor explicitly says that they are not doing this âfor the moneyâ. A press conference then follows, with Igna sharing her secret to her long life is to eat fresh vegetables, breathe fresh air, and drink coconut wine from time to time. One press asked Igna if there is anything sheâs waiting to happen, given her long time alive, and Igna, with all confidence, she answered that she wants to die. Of course, everyone was in shock at the stark difference of Ignaâs wishes to what everyone else wants her to achieve. The mayor dismisses it as part of Ignaâs sense of humor, yet it showed some distress on his part, also with Nidaâs.
Yet, it is obvious that Igna is pressured by the community with âtouristâ activities and stuff, such as taking photos with them, letting people in her home, and Nida exclusively selling shirts, mugs, pins, and magnets with Ignaâs face in it. These merchandise, although shows capitalism at one side, gives a connection between the poverty of the town and their desire to improve their resources with Lola Ignaâs winning as the oldest living grandmother.
It comes to the point that Igna is already too furious with noisy tourists waiting for her to look out of the window and take photos with her. She takes her urine-filled pot, and pours it to the annoying tourists, with a young man named Tim (Yves Flores) taking most of the hit as he is in front. After driving the tourists away, Tim stays, introducing himself as the son of Lola Ignaâs missing great-granddaughter, Ana (played by Merryl Soriano). Igna is overjoyed that she quickly hugs Tim even if heâs still soaking in her own piss. Afterwards, Tim shows his intent to make a vlog about his grandma as one of the oldest living in the world, much to Ignaâs confusion (even calling âvlogâ as âblaâ).
Igna shows Tim a special place in her house, with photographs of her relatives who have passed away. Tim sees the photo of his mother Ana, and it made Igna relieved that after all this time, her missing great-granddaughter is still alive and doing well. Tim stays in for the night, only to be in shock seeing his own great-great-grandma peeing on the pot in front of him. She then starts to open up about her previous job as a midwife after a couple requested to birth their child (in which Igna refused as sheâs too old and weak to deliver a baby).
When evening comes and Tim is fast asleep, Igna is left in the dining area drinking her coconut wine. However, she notices someone outside her hut, so she shouts at the figure, but the person doesnât answer. With slow movements and the suspense coming the background music, Igna goes outside to face the unknown figure, only to find out that it is her husband, Carias. In Filipino superstition, âseeingâ your dead loved one, or pagsundo, means that your death is nearing, which makes Igna hopeful that she will be reunited with her husband real soon. The next morning, she goes to Gusting, her gay friend who is also the first child she helped to deliver to the world, and asks if she can borrow her axe and hammer. She also shares to Gusting that Carias was already âfetchingâ her and she would make her own coffin. Gusting then wonders who would be there to fetch him when he dies as he never got the chance to marry and have children. She and Tim then goes to a lumberjack, asking for some scrap wood, in which Tim carries back to their hut without knowing the reason for it
Igna, overjoyed, then tells Tim her secret about meeting Carias and then requests Tim to make her coffin for her. Tim, obviously confused and hurt with his great-great-grandmotherâs request, quickly refuses to do it, saying that theyâve only met for a short time and he wants to spend more time knowing his grandmother. He shares about his struggles back home, where Ana has met another guy and theyâre expecting a child real soon. Tim confesses that he feels out of place at home because he doesnât feel loved, so one of the reasons he went to Ignaâs place is that his mother wonât step foot on that place. Igna contemplates on this, and when morning arrives, they learn that Gusting never woke up from his sleep.
Being the first baby that she delivered, Igna shares her grief over Gusting dying ahead of her. Igna shares that she has assisted in the delivery of all the citizens of the town. She then jokingly says that her long life could be credited to her selfishness in being a midwife; that with every child she delivers, it adds more years to her life. However, it doesnât make her happy anymore because of the long years of her life, sheâs the one who always being left behind grieving when someone passes away. Igna also says that she doesnât know the people from the town anymore, and sheâs already tired of living. Tim listens to all of this and after sharing tuba together, he starts building his great-great-grandmotherâs coffin.
Over the next few days, Igna has grown kinder to the tourists since her sole wish of having her coffin built is now materializing. She offers to take photos with them, but due to exhaustion, she fainted, and eventually as the story progresses, the doctor explains that Igna had hit her head as she fainted, leading to stroke and comatose. This scene, albeit emotional and filled with suspense, felt rushed and disjointed to the whole film since it wasnât clearly shown how Igna actually passed out. The transition left viewers wondering how would Igna have hit her head when the tourists near her were quick on their feet to catch her from falling.
Moving on, with Igna unconscious, Nida and Rene finds out that Tim is supporting Ignaâs wish of building a coffin, and, thinking it is the source of the evil surrounding Igna (according to a faith healer), Rene destroys it without hesitation. Tim pleaded not to do so since Igna has been telling him over and over again that she wants to die soon, and Nidaâs selfishness showed up; she told Tim that if Igna dies, her business and merchandise will suffer a lot. The mayor also forces the family to keep Igna alive, as the results of the award will be announced really soon. Tim finally calls Ana to visit Igna as soon as possible, and he wishes to bond longer with his great-great-grandmother.
Ana, few days into giving birth yet her face filled with beating scars, arrives to the town, in which made Nida angry and resentful over her sister finally returning after many years of abandoning them. Ana tries to wake Igna up over tearful eyes, and in a cliche âfinger-jerkingâ moment, Igna wakes up, wanting to pee. She rips the IV off her wrist, and hugs Ana right away. Tim runs to the town, sharing everyone the good news that Igna is now awake and doing fine. It leads to Nida and Ana reconciling in front of Igna, and it makes her feel happy and grateful to have witnessed it.
Igna opens the windows again to more tourists and fans, even asking who wants to take a selfie with her. After a long day, everyone gathers for dinner and with the mood being set that Igna is satisfied with her simple life as it is, especially with her great-granddaughters reuniting and her family being complete, she shares that death should not be a thing to be afraid of. It obviously set some of her relatives back, especially Tim, but they accept what Igna wishes and now they support her in any way she wants. After dinner, with everyone asleep, Igna sees Carias again, this time, Igna is sure that her time is finally up.
Ana and Tim walk around the farm when morning arrives, confessing to Tim that she already left her boyfriend. Timâs face lightens up when he finds out that no matter what happens, Ana still loves him as her son. However, she then cries out in pain; sheâs about to give birth. With no one with them, Tim calls Igna, pleading her to help Ana to give birth. She carefully delivers the child in the middle of the farm, and from the distance, Carias appears again, but instead of Igna seeing him, it was Ana who sees her great-great-grandfather, and immediately dies after giving birth to a daughter (who remained unnamed until the end of the film). The red dress, that Igna wants to wear for her own funeral, is worn by Ana instead.
In the end, Igna did not get the title as she is being outlived by another woman in Geogria. Merchandise stop selling, and things are slowly becoming more peaceful and quiet around Ignaâs small hut, now housing the newborn baby and Tim. One night before going to sleep, Tim records Igna singing a lullaby to the baby, until Igna notices that Tim has been recording her all this time.
For the final scene in the movie, it comes full circle with the first scene where Igna is sleeping by herself; this time, the baby is right next to her, sleeping as well. It isnât specified how long it had been since the baby looked significantly older. The scene then cuts to Timâs final vlog, which shows Igna from his point of view, and uploads it to YouTube. Igna carries the baby outside, looking at the fields with his face showing various emotions. At one side, it looks like she found a new meaning to live now that she has to take care of her great-great-great-granddaughter. At another side, however, she looks frustrated as she had helped deliver another human being, which means her years on earth is still far from over.
Lola Igna shows a kind of existential crisis that is not often told and shown to the audience. Usually, this type of crisis is often seen in coming-of-age films marketed to the youth, however, this is the same crisis, but in a different perspective. When we think of âexistential crisisâ, the common conception that the crisis only affects those who are still not sure of what to do with their life and whatâs the point of being alive. Lola Igna, on the other hand, have been living for so long she has lost the will and purpose of staying alive.
Through this film, although marketed as a âcomedyâ film, has tugged our heartstrings with every life (and death) moment that Igna faces. It is a drama lightened up with Ignaâs quick humorous comments and simply our appreciation with the wisdom of the elderly. Lola Igna is a recommended movie for Filipino families who want a feel-good film thatâs still etched with various emotions that will make you laugh, cry, and contemplate the value of life that we have.
How do these films represent Filipino Cinema the way they want to?
These three films represent Filipino Cinema in at least three different perspectives. LSS: Last Song Syndrome represents Filipinoâs love for music and pursuing their passion, but is often frowned upon if thought of as a source of income or a career choice. It also represents the youthâs longing for love â be it from someone we like or a parent we havenât seen yet. The Panti Sisters represents both the good and the bad aspects of how Filipinos treat and regard the LGBT community, especially in the familial structure. Lola Igna represents how Filipinos can literally âidolizeâ anyone that trends on social media that we often become victims of capitalism and consumerism. It also shows Filipinosâ connection with their loved ones even if theyâre far away from us. The stories â both main and side stories â show a slice of the Filipino life that, albeit being formalist in nature, builds a connection between the film and the viewers.
LSS: Last Song Syndrome has a coming-of-age feel, with the addition of Ben&Ben songs to add and emphasize certain parts of the film and to give more context to the audience what the film is all about. It is a musical in essence, but unlike most musical films with original songs written for them, Ben&Ben, being one of the executive producers of LSS, made sure that their existing songs and the plot of the film are connected with one another. Aside from the music, colors of the scenes provide the emotions intended. The Panti Sisters has an extravagantly colorful and vibrant color scheme, with filming techniques similar to the typical Filipino slapstick comedy films that the masses are used to. It could be done intentionally since the film targets this part of the audience; the message they want to send is on a serious, even darker, note that if such was delivered in a dramatic, realistic manner, it will not fulfill its purpose. Lola Igna has a lot of still, silent sequences with Igna going about with her life alongside loud, dynamic sequences with Igna being distressed in front of many people shows. The closeup shots are often used with the main character since her emotions are a vital part of the film. Using wide shots to show Ignaâs home, especially with Tim alongside her, is a representation of their bonding as grandma and great-great-grandson.
Each film depicts a story in the life of an ordinary Filipino. They can be viewed as a chapter in what the Filipino society was like that can be looked back on by future generations. In celebration of the centennial anniversary of Filipino cinema, LSS: Last Song Syndrome, The Panti Sisters, and Lola Igna are prime faces of how the industry has evolved over the past 100 years. Yet, with all the innovation in filming techniques and change in socio-political and economic structure of our society, there are still traces of the traditional Filipino cinema that survived through time. They still possess a strong Filipino identity, aside from the language, but the cultures they portray in the film. Such cultures include, but not limited to: patriarchy, tolerance (but not acceptance) of the members of the LGBT community, indifference of elders over the creative/music industry, consumerism, and strong family ties.
