Each student will present his/her work from the podium and address these three questions:
Are you a Visual-Realist of Haptic-Expressionist image maker? Explain by describing your working method to support your claim. You may wish to discuss other mediums you practice, but you should be able to speak directly to your photographic experience as well.
Choose one image from your imagery for Assignment #1 and use it to describe:
Your (current) personal Color Key. Why do you believe you are drawn to the color(s) you have identified? Consider allĀ imagery and mediums you are currently making to identify this key, but describe it through the singular photograph you have chosen
Your personal Composition Key
Use at least one principle (balance, emphasis, scale, variety) and one element of design (line, shape, color, texture) to identify
Look for āuniversalā composition keys: circle, figure eight, spiral, and triangle
Use both the Color and Composition keys you identified to support your initial answer to question #1 (Visual-Realistic vs. Haptic-Expressionist). Has identifying your keys changed your response?
After this initialĀ presentation, classmates will consider and discuss:
Is there any dissent towards what the artist identified as their working method and/or keys. If so, where do you see a different conclusion?Ā
Choose one of the presenting studentās images and describe the Figure-Ground Relationships they employed.
Now consider the presenting artistās imagery as a whole - were they successful in photographically transforming their chosen space into a place? Be specific about your answer, using their imagery as argument and the answers to both sets of questions above.
If successful at presenting their chosen space into a place, next describeĀ that place as presented in the imagery. What is its purpose? Atmosphere? Emotional presence? Is their place inviting, threatening, safe, unstable, etc? Does it make you feel somber, joyful fearful or something in between?
No answers to the above questions can be used against student presenter during the grading process. Critique is a safe space where students are encouraged to develop a critical dialogue with one another and not as a space to pre-grade the student on how well they met requirements of the assignment. Students should take into consideration the feedback they receive for later exercises and assignments, but should not consider that feedback as a condemnation or affirmation of their final assignment grade.
