Tutorial / 18-10-17
Notes:
-How is your architectural strategy working? Use colour coding to explain different activities during different times of the day.
-Start developing your characters – think who is the performer and who is the audience?
-Consider the street as the stage of your theatre – think how the audience becomes part of the performance
-Think about different strategies of attracting people
-Fast/Slow – what are the caster characters
-Think about reoccupation of materials found on site; relate to objects that start revealing themselves
-Relate to curious materials/textures/surfaces
-What is your architectural language? How do you approach it and how do you move it forward?
-Consider shifting values of objects/materials/activities.
-Consider different frictions between materials.
-Start constructing scaffoldings of evidences and develop your architecture around them
-Develop time based strategies of activities on site. Make your drawings evident and believable.
-Focus on simple idea, but resolve it in a complex way.
-Develop relational architecture – think about how one thing informs another; what is the input and what is the result/output?
-Base your drawings on analysis and actual simulations of activities.
-Keep adding layers of information and complexity to your drawings.
-Reveal a whole range of detail – strong systems of relationships and think about the outcome and impact of those relationships to their context.
-Consider visual tactility of seeing things.
-Consider one drawing in two layers, revealing different things.
-Different spaces receive different ways of occupancy during different times of the day.
-Focus on dynamic, aggressive and positive architecture.
-Try to play/suggest things beyond themselves through your work.
-Technology and creativity allow new opportunities.
-What are your values as a designer?
-Unpack multiple stories in one drawing.
-Think about how people occupy a space for long period of time.
-How do you strategically attract interest?
-More detail and understanding of spaces is crucial for you as a designer.
-Be explicit about your stories.
-Consider transitional zones in your drawings.
-Demonstrate full ambition of your project in one drawing.
-Look at Bill Brandt staircase photography.
-Engage with the idea of thinking through design; develop a system of doing one specific thing that has got multiple outputs.
-Things are never the same twice.
-Your task as a designer is to weird the normal and to normal the weird.
Tutorial/11-10-17
Notes:
- Develop strong axonometric drawings of the site - Work with fast/slow spaces - Where are your ideas coming from. Make sure it is evident and rigorously presented on your drawings - Reveal your personality through your work - What are passionate about and what do you extract from site? - Draw the detail that you are interested in and strip away the walls - Find interesting objects and activities in space- 3d model them and reveal their curiosities - Communicate the nine architectural elements - Be specific and focus on something particular that you could use in your advantage to develop your architecture from. - Develop a strong drawing language with a high level of detail - Capture the richness of the streets - Look for vertical / horizontal circulations - Always take responsibility for your actions - Develop notational language - What is your research question? - Reveal something particular that you are passionate about - Individuality is key for masters level - Design through occupation of space - Look for curious things that are already happening and use them to inform your design - Accelerate your design process through solid research - Communicate your findings through calibration. Make them evident. - Start extracting objects - wider urban environment - Start developing scaffoldings for your architecture based on your findings. - The activity of people calibrate the environment - Develop your ideas and connect them with contextual evidences - Find and adopt new ways to communicate architectural language - The vibrant architectural velocity is key for your architecture. - Always be additive to your work - Talk about what you see in your architecture and others do not. - The street is a performance stage. - What are the triggers that you want to negotiate? - Create your value system.
