Fishing Crazy: In Pursuit of the Smallest Catch Since starting direct-to-customer sales of VARIVAS line here in the United States, the topic of "Finesse Fishing" comes up frequently in conversations between our U.S. office staff and HQ staff across the ocean in Japan. I suppose so-called finesse fishing in America is not quite "finesse-enough" compare to the Japanese standard. Nonetheless, I always defend the honor of fellow Americans by saying, "So what! We've got bigger fish to fry here in America!" However, whether we want to admit it or not, one can always learn from others, right? A learning moment came for me when I stumbled across a TV program produced by Japan's NHK broadcasting company (similar to PBS in the US or BBC in the UK). New York State Championship 2020

New York State Championship 2020 September 27, 2020 2020 NY Kayak Bass Fishing State Champ!   Brandon Brylinsky, VARIVAS America field tester, here. What a roller coaster these past 4 days (Sept 24-27, 2020) have been! Can’t believe I came out with the win! What follows is my blow by blow. The TLDR (long-story, short) version is that I worked my butt off, caught some fish and won the tournament! The New York Kayak Bass Fishing (NYKBF) State Championships was a two-day event on Oneida Lake in upstate NY - a huge lake where tournaments can be won with either smallmouth or largemouth.  I decided I was going to solely focus on the smallies. This lake is heavily pressured, and the fish are smart - they’ve probably seen just about every lure out there. For this event 41 top kayak anglers competed, and it was absolutely a grind for everyone. The fish (and the wind!) did not make it easy! Before I continue, I have to confess that, before this weekend, I had never caught more than 2 smallies in one day on that lake. I really wasn’t sure I could get 5 score-able fish two days in a row, but I wanted to try anyway. That was my primary objective for the weekend. I put in two full days of practice Thursday and Friday. Thursday I threw everything at them and explored a lot of areas and came up with nothing. Hi everyone, this is Isono, VARIVAS Field Tester, sending you a fishing report from Lake Nojiri, Nagano Prefecture, which I visited at the end of July. In late July, the bass is everywhere from shallow to deep in Lake Nojiri. In this trip, I tried to chase the bass by narrowing it to 8-10m (26ft-32ft) deep. I first read the movement of the bass in the fish finder, then sent a light Carolina Rig to the point where I assumed they’d swim to. Waiting for the bass to find the worm that you left behind as an ambush appears un-exciting, but it's actually a very thrilling fishing method for me. Although I’m looking at the bottom of the lake through the finder, you can feel the excitement of "come on, come on... there!" -- because you're watching bass move on the fish finder in real-time. The key to this fishing is understanding the fish finder and reading the movement of the bass. I enjoy the sharp pull of the Smallmouth bass by reading the bass movement and letting them bite. For this style of fishing, the line touches the bottom of the lake; so it’s necessary to have a line that is strong enough for obstacles and has excellent wear resistance that can withstand the small and sharp teeth peculiar to the Smallmouth bass. I'm using 2.5 lb VARIVAS Ganoa Absolute Fluorocarbon line. Together with a Nogales Death Lock Wide (ULTRA FINE WIRE) #3 hook that can hook securely even with light line. Read the full article

Joban Offshore Flounder Jigging Hi everyone, this is Field Tester Yokoshima. A popular target for the summer saltwater game in Japan is Mahi Mahi and Tuna in casting games, but in my case, it's a bit different. The field I go to most of this time is the waters off Fukushima Prefecture. Although the area suffered enormous damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, it has undergone remarkable reconstruction in the last few years; and welcomes us as anglers. I enjoyed flounder jigging off the coast of Joban in Fukushima Prefecture with my fishing buddy, Mr. Noro, who's a professional angler and VARIVAS field tester. It's been a long time since my last fishing trip. On the first day, I started out looking for fish within range. Then decided on jigging at the depths of 30-45m (98ft – 147ft). The tackle I used was VARIVAS ViOLENTEl Slow Jerk Style VLJ-64-Lv2 rod, VARIVAS Avani Jigging 10×10 Max Power PE X8 #1 line with VARIVAS Shock Leader Fluorocarbon 22-25 lb connected to a 130g jig. Flounder are abundant in this area, so in order to firmly hook them, I used VARIVAS Avani Ocean Works Twin Assist Power Round #3/0 hook; and started jigging. Water temperature was lower than usual this day; and although fish responded to jigs, they escaped the hook. After changing to a VARIVAS Avani Ocean Works Twin Assist Light Jig hook, I was able to bring in consecutive hits. Although this hook has a thin shaft, it's super strong and sticks well. 92LB Yellowfin Casting Explosion in Sagami Bay! VARIVAS Field Reporter: Tatsuya Kazuno Japan’s Sagami Bay is such a competitive battleground every year. Yellowfin Tuna are nervous and quickly dive deep because of boats roaming on the surface. This poses limited casting opportunities for anglers. Being able to cast further than others is an advantage! That’s when I recommend VARIVAS Avani Casting PE SMP and Ocean Record Shock Leader 100lb. Since the line slides well and is so smooth, you won’t get entangled in guides. You can really use it without stress when using a nylon leader (because it is softer than Fluorocarbon). The tuna pictured in the photo was a difficult one because the front hook was on its head.  It took a long time, but I was able to control it with the PE line and the leader without any fluffing or twisting!   Yellowfins are late this year for Sagami Bay this season.  It’s sure to be a better season from now on, so I hope you get a chance to try this line selection for your own reference. Journey to meet Malaysian and Indian Snakehead with the new lineup of VAMOS line March 7th, 2020 Takuya Kozuka Hello. My name is Takuya Kozuka; I’m a VARIVAS Field Tester. This is my report on a 10-days fishing expedition in South and Southeast Asia in early 2020. In this expedition I travelled to various locations for three round matches. The first round was to find a record-size Toman (Giant Snakehead, Giant Mudfish) in Malaysia. Fishing here consisted mainly of casting about 1/2 ounce buzzbait in or around brush. Fishing in hot weather with temperatures over 30 C (86 F) in intense, tropical, rain showers is a tough one. It’s a challenge to continuously swing the rod all day (for a minimum of 8 hours) with a very heavy-duty tackle setting. One way of achieving it is setting up a heavy-duty bass tackle and strengthening only the line. My tackle was VARIVAS VAMOS No. 3 with 130m spool, a which is a new product I helped produce for  VARIVAS’s 2020 lineup. It's paired with Ocean Record Shock Leader 50 lb. line combined at 1 Hiro (Hiro is a Japanese fishing term for length, similar to the Old English measurement of  'fathom,' fingertip to fingertip of open arms. In Japanese conversion, it's about 150 cm or 59 inches.). With Shimano's 100 class (Bantam MGL) standard spool, VAMOS No. 3-130m fits perfectly. Big Toman hunting is all about the opportunity to get a hit once a day. For 3 whole days I kept swinging the rod, but unfortunately, I didn’t catch anything. New Zealand Fly Fishing Trip May 24, 2020 Shingo Matsui New Zealand fishing at the beginning of the year. Hello! I'm VARIVAS Field Tester, Shingo Matsui. This is a report when I visited New Zealand (hereafter referred to as NZ), a mecca for fly fishing, at the beginning of the 2020 new year. NZ is made up of  two land masses--a Northern Island and Southern Island--and hundreds of small islands.  For this trip I went to the Murupara, Hawke's Bay region of NZ’s northern island, an area known for an abundance of Rainbow Trout. I returned to the same river that I frequently visited during my university days in NZ. This year NZ’s North Island was dry due to lack of rain.  River and lake levels were low, creating a difficult, stressful situation for fish. That said, this is NZ, and the potential of Rainbow Trout boldly biting at big flies was still alive. The seasons in NZ are exactly opposite to Japan, so it's still summer during this time of year. I enjoyed fishing in the summer-like weather in early 2020. My style of fishing in NZ is to use both dry fly and nymph rig according to the season and the particular situation. The size of the dry fly is basically #6 and #8. The hook, a Royal Wolf, Humpy, Stim with a 2500V streamer. I recommend a hook with a long shank and a thick body so that you can wind a long knot. Most of the nymphs are #8 to #14. The hook is a lava and a flashback pattern of a tungsten bead head using 2130V-BL and 2430V-WBL. Read the full article

A good catch in Tokyo Bay Field report by Wataru Udagawa. A good catch in Tokyo Bay. Pacific Cutlassfish in Tokyo Bay are at their peak now. Usually they gather 80m (328 ft.) near the sea bottom off Cape Kannon. But, it's different this year. They are flocking in the shallow area about 40m deep. In mid-January the fish actively fed off the coast of Yokohama and produced good results. They were mostly 4-finger-sized. The largest ones were over 50cm (20 in.) and overflowed from my cooler box. I report below is on my first trip, January 15, and second trip, February 15th, where I hoped for the same good results. On January 15th, eight of us Cutlassfish hunters gathered and set sail at 7:00 am. We slowly aimed at a point off Yokohama. My tackle on this day was a small electric reel on a special rod. I used a high-quality, trusted PE line -- VARIVAS High Grade PE Marking Type II X8.  For the rig, I used  Y-Tenbin rig for the cutlassfish, No. 40 sinker. The leader was green color, Hard Top Fune Harisu Fluorocarbon which blended with the tide color. And a special 2/0 hook for cutlassfish. After arriving 50 minutes by boat, off the coast of Kawasaki city, where you can see the Yokohama Bay Bridge in the background, I encountered a good bite after the first throw immediately after the captain's signal. Those Cutlassfish from 35m (115 ft) shallow water  were so energetic, so much so that when I turned on the motor reel right after a hit, I lost several of them. Read the full article

‘Gure’ fishing in Suzaki, Southern Izu March 27th, 2020 Field report by Atsuo Azuma ‘Gure’ fishing, Suzaki, Southern Izu. Gure = Mejina, 'Girella mezina,' Largescale Blackfish, native to the southern pacific coast of Japan, and the coastal area of the East China Sea. The sea is often rough due to spring-like weather, alternating 3 cold days and 4 warm.  Owing to strong winds and waves,  the original fishing trip on March 18th to the western side of Izu peninsula was changed to Suzaki on the southern side of the Izu peninsula.  It turned out, however, to be a delightful trip for a catching 40 cm (17 in.) Gure. South Izu Suzaki is a peninsula protruding to the east of Shimoda. I arrived, prepared, at the ferry  at 5 a.m.;  greeted Captain Funaichi Tanaka and boarded. Around 5:30 a.m. about 15 people boarded the ship and headed for Cape Tsumekizaki, which is behind the wind. “Azuma-san, let’s go?” At the first crossing we went up to the top of a remote rock. Satoru Kataoka (age 65) hiked up to the high point on the left, whereas I entered the low-lying area where the boat landed. For Chumming bait, I used a mix of raw and hard processed type bait--6 kg of krill fish-attracting agent added, and the stab bait. My rod was No. 1.5 size.  For the line and rig I used VARIVAS Tribute Iso Float Type No. 2.5, VARIVAS Vermax Iso Zero Harisu No. 2 for a leader, and Zeek Gure No. 2 hook. Nogales Hooks make a big difference in early spring Bass fishing in Lake Biwa Bass Fishing Field Report by Daisuke Ando Hello! Daisuke Ando here. Spring in Lake Biwa has gradually begun and I’ve started catching big bass! I’m a guide for a guest and am reporting on the VARIVAS Nogales products that played an active role. Day 1: It was a rainy day, unfortunately (the early spring rains in Lake Biwa are known to be pretty tough), but fortunately, my guest caught a 16" with quick reeling of a shad lure. The hook, of course, had been replaced with a VARIVAS Zero Friction Triple Hook. This season’s fast reel also increases the hook’s pierce. I got several hits with this; but for some reason, never a catch. Time to change the pace. When I changed the jig to a bottom strolling 3.5 gram VARIVAS Mono Guard,  it went fine! Even when the line rubbed against concrete tetrapods, I wasn’t worried, because for the record,  I had VARIVAS 10 lb. Absolute MG Fluorocarbon on the leader. The wind started blowing and the fish started floating to the surface. So, I switched to a long bill minnow and started catching again.   The moment you stop and move, everything bites! Of course, the hook is Zero Friction Triple. You can trust that a thin shaft hook can pierce well in such a condition. Two days later Somehow, the weather forecast turned terrible. So, I told my guest that we’d fish in the morning only. Despite starting from the same area where it was good a few days ago, it felt different; so we moved on quickly. Read the full article
