Trying for consistency on the drop spindle and every picture I see online shows much thinner singles than what I'm achieving.
Is it user error and I just need to draft thinner, or is it a lack of twist?
Maybe Tumblr just has a penchant for only sharing skinny singles and my plump little threads are just fine as they are?
Since I managed to get the antique wheel (Blithe for the uninitiated) working, I am seeing if I can even out the uneven bits in this yarn.
Exercise in futility most likely but it seems to be kinda working so far.
How we started vs how it's going
the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into āinclusive restroomsā and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that couldāve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. Iāve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you
This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.
This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.
I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that ābathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how theyāre constructed, so no wonder women donāt want men in the same bathrooms as themā and when I pointed out that we could justā¦ build better bathroomsā¦ with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said āhonestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldnāt we already be doing it?ā BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Havenāt you noticed that menās restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Havenāt you noticed that womenās restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are āinclusiveā in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesnāt matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesnāt matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.
Seattle's SEA-TAC airport has an all gender restroom that's a row of about a dozen fully enclosed separated little rooms that lock, with a shared bank of sinks and it's great. Love it. Lot of very strange encounters at the sinks, feels odd the first few times! But people laugh it off almost instantly. Because it's not actually a big deal to share a sink.

"don't look away" is a meaningless phrase. who are you benefiting by inundating yourself with misery porn?
DO something about things you care about. Go to a protest for something you believe in, if you can. Donate money to a cause if you have it to spare. Volunteer your time to help people if you have the energy. Write a letter to your political representatives if that's something you can do. These are meaningful ways to try to make change in the world.
And then? don't feel bad about insulating yourself from horrible news. Don't make yourself look at images that make you feel sick. Don't read endless things that depress you. Because frankly it gets harder to actually do the more you doomscroll. Reading constantly about things you can't change because they're happening at a systemic level or on the other side of the world is paralyzing. It makes you less able to help where you can.
I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

To avoid more punishment, the child sits still and is quiet. But they have to actively remind themself constantly to sit still and be quiet.
The teacher sees the child sitting still and being quiet. The teacher treats this as the baseline.
Since the child is putting a lot of effort into sitting still and being quiet, doing so distracts from paying attention to what the teacher is teaching. The child then is punished for not paying attention.
The child now knows that they'll be punished no matter what they do. And they can't explain why they struggle, because any attempt to explain is arguing.

Step 3: spend an hour of time you were supposed to be working just constantly thinking about how to do it
Step 4: spend your lunch hour (and another 20 minutes after work) making the thing

Note: this removes all of the buttons at the top of a fic and also I built it on my laptop with zero considerations for mobile. This is a shitpost kind of a site skin, so just try it for the visceral horrors and not for actual usability.
