vanna was pretty convinced that they were just supposed to be alone for their entire life. no father was one thing. they never grew attached so there couldn’t be enough hurt feelings there. but their mom? that one cut deep. they had them for a few years of life. they remembered her face, her smile, and the way they used to have fun together. so when they were abandoned at king candy’s it was the hardest thing they ever had to process. they still don’t understand but what they have chalked it up to is that their glitch was just too much for their mom.
the orphanage sucked and van was glad to have that place behind them. they were just bullied for being different in a way that cause problems. their glitching was something they never had control over and they used to appear in the middle of fights, conversations, on tables and it just got them in a lot of trouble. they had to believe it was a curse like their mother had been saying because what else would it be at this point?
they knew it was dumb to keep those skates on them for so long. they hadn’t even fit by the time van made it back to king candy’s it was just....it was their lucky charm. it was what made them feel confident enough to take challenges on and when teagan and her crew destroyed them....it really destroyed a part of van.
despite its ups and downs, van really likes working at king candy’s. they did not like cleaning up after kids and the restrooms and all that fun stuff, but they liked that they could keep a part of their childhood in tact even though that place should be nothing but trauma.
ralph entering their life was the best thing to ever happen to them. at first they thought he was just some annoying hobo but after time they became the closest of friends. of course van’s only long term friend was some older guy but it was strictly sibling relationship half the time when ralph wasn’t trying to insert himself like he was their dad. van has only admitted it once or twice but ralph literally saved their life and they will never ever forget that.
where to begin with teagan muttonfudge. they managed to impress her and her crew on an off day when they were skating and van thought that they had finally made friends their age. they vibed well with some of them and even though a lot of them seemed a little delusional with their wealth, van tried to give them a solid chance. teagan...well....van fell hard. there was just something about her when she wasn’t around her friends and getting caught up in their drama that felt so...right and so human. they hooked up and van was led to believe that was because teagan wanted to give them a shot but in the end it was van who got played pretty badly there.
with richie it was just mostly annoyance most of the time. they were quick to humble him when his ego started to suffocate the room and denied him many times throughout the brief period of time van was part of the crowd. deep down van didn’t hate him or anything but when he kissed them....immediate ick. they slapped him so hard across the face their hand turned red. by the time they were going to tell teagan....she had already decided that van was poison.
lloyd was someone van genuinely liked. he was always sticking up for them and being the sweetest guy they have ever met outside of ralph. and then suddenly he wasn’t. him leaving them behind hurt more than some of the others.
all in all, van had never been nothing but themselves. they knew they could get carried away when they were excited and that they tried to act like they didn’t care about much half the time because of how many times they have been hurt in the past by people but....they really thought they belonged with the sugar rush crew for a little bit. they still don’t really understand what they did that made them turn on them so fast and it stings but van’s fight or flight has kicked in hard with any of them since the doxing.
getting fired sucked and they turned to drinking because their glitching was so out of control that they couldn’t function. it worked and van won’t lie that it got to be a pretty bad problem but ralph has since called them out and they are really working on being better. it isn’t always easy and it’s only been a month since they returned to king candy’s with a second chance after explaining everything and they just don’t want to screw it up again.
van has no idea but they have undiagnosed autism. there have been clear signs throughout their life but because they didn’t have the proper support system...it remains unknown and they can’t really explain themselves because they have yet to understand.
the first time van met shea and saw them skate...it was an eye opener. van knew they always wanted to do something that involved skating but derby was an entirely new world that they were desperate to get a closer look into. it was nice having shea because she just...understood them. in ways that even ralph couldn’t.
when it comes to relationships now van has completely shut down the emotional department. strictly physical or nothing. they could not afford to have someone they really liked turn on them again.
they are slightly addicted to getting tattoos. they got their first one when they were underaged and relied on their fake id but every time after they were totally legal. they are all over their arms, chest, and wherever they can put something when inspiration hits.
they have a very notorious sweet tooth. in fact, they can be persuaded pretty easily with some candy. their favorites' are anything with chocolate, jawbreakers, lollipops, nerds, and well...most candy. EXCEPT thin mints.
for a while they didn’t have a social media presence because of well..teagan. it was mediocre before the doxing and it was wiped after. they just recently started getting back into it.
big lover of first person shooter games. that was sort of what got them back into social media because of streaming and all that junk.
yes they vape. don’t jude.
they are incredibly guarded and incredibly blunt. they don’t have time to learn is people are being real with them or not. either they are or they are out of their life. they are oddly charming though, even if their jokes are dumb and they are stubborn as hell. to van, their jokes are amazing and if people get it, they get it. if they don’t, they don’t. they may come off confident and sure of themselves but they are not. at all. not even a little bit. they just have to fake it so they don’t glitch out.
music is a very big thing to them. they love nothing more than wearing a large pair of noise canceling headphones and getting lost in their many playlists.
their apartment with ralph isn’t fancy or anything but it is the first real home they have had since they were four and they are very protective of it. when they were doxed they refused to move and when one of the many fans of a sugar rush memeber tries to come and mess with them, they will not hesitate to scare them off. van is a fighter and has gotten themselves into a good amount of scrappy battles during their time in the orphanage. do not fuck with them and their patience.
