I was casually browsing new anime shows last night when I stumbled on this.

I’m so deeply in love with this anime that I went and started playing the game:

Gameplay wise, it’s a lot like the Cybird Ikemen series. I don’t really like the interface very much, because there’s no log (if you accidentally tapped too fast and skipped a few lines) and because the text box is in a really awkward place on the screen. The CG seem to be a little low quality, but Nobunaga has a great variety of expressions.

Final Thoughts - Kochoki

It’s almost relieving to not be glowing in praise about a show for the first time in days, but Kochoki’s flaws do ultimately hold me back from enjoying it as much as I want to.

It really comes down to a clash between production decisions and the tone the creators are going for. One can definitely tell that Kochoki comes to us from the same director as The Heroic Legend of Arslan, but the issues come inevitably from trying to tell an epic-scale story in only twelve episodes, without cutting out the early stories of our subject’s childhood. This is my first exposure to a show adapting the life of Oda Nobunaga, and while it does so in a way that strikes me as a little too complimentary of a man who by all accounts was much more cold than this, I can suspend my disbelief over that…but I can’t do so knowing that there’s no way this story can reach a satisfactory ending point in only about four hours of screentime. In fact, the structural problems are so evident that I think the show would have been better off ending at episode ten than twelve, as it presents a much better escalation into the climax and much more personal stakes than the brief story arc that happens in the last two installments.

That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy my time with Kochoki, or have very nice things to say about it - while I think that a lot of historical characters probably needed to be condensed as we have far too many to remember that don’t have a lot of screentime, the few that are developed do have a lot going for them, the dub is totally acceptable, and it is easily Studio Deen’s best-looking production in years, with quite a few notably lush visuals and - miracle of miracles - characters that stay on-model pretty much the entire time.

But unfortunately, the fact is that this is also a show that skipped over the entire final battle because there wouldn’t be enough screentime for it, and had its climax two entire episodes early without enough time to give us a full, investment-worthy story after the heavy drama of that particular arc. It’s one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen in a show, with the narrator essentially telling us, “and so he won the battle, which was also definitely a culmination of everything that had come before, the end”, mere moments after the fight had started. Like rushing the ending of a bedtime story because your kid is about to fall asleep. Baffling.

If this show had ended at episode ten, I’d probably give it a 7, but that ending drags it down to a strong 5/light 6, and totally wrecks any chance it had of me recommending it to anybody. It’s not the biggest disappointment in a show that I never had especially high praise for, but it is still a letdown, especially to anybody that gave it a higher score before it was even over.

This is really not helping the niggling “the MC is actually Hideyoshi” quack theory that had been bothering me this whole time. Like, it’s probably because Hideyoshi’s story is a convenient explanation that people seems to accept, and Kochouki doesn’t actually have a Hideyoshi, so hijacking the story is actually pretty clever of them. IT’S JUST MAKING ME NERVOUS, THAT’S WHAT.

I dunno if it’s all from one singular source, like Ehon Taikouki, or if it’s a line of narrative cobbled together from multiple Hideyoshi books, but the popular story of Hideyoshi’s employment with the Oda was something like… pretty much how the MC got settled with Nobu in this game. 

Hideyoshi waited for Nobunaga in some road in Owari, jumps out while Nobunaga was riding past, and begged to be hired. Similar-ish cover story too. Ran away from home, had a weird conviction that Nobunaga is a good master to serve and insisted on wanting to be his vassal. Once he got accepted, he gained Nobunaga’s further interest by being a very good stable hand and the horses he handled looked visibly better-cared. It kind of got lumped with the “please hire me” incident in this game, but ye gads, same difference. 

Also according to the app’s teasers, the MC later got into some sort of friendly rivalry with Inuchiyo once he shows up. Well, why do you think Hideyoshi and Toshiie are friends in a lot of Sengoku stories? 

The thing about MC living in a world ruled by the Imagawa is also something of a peripheral similarity. Some versions of the Hideyoshi story had him serve under an Imagawa vassal clan called the Matsushita. Due to conflict in the household, Hideyoshi eventually was fired or just ran away from that house and took up being a wandering peddler.

This accent thing is a famous story associated with Hideyoshi and his wife. I think I mention this story pretty often in my blog but… They usually use the typical formal samurai language, but one time they got into a heated row, and they revert to local Owari dialect and everyone around noticed it. 

I mean the MC is a girl, so of course there’s differences here and there, but wow. The closest thing to Fem!Hideyoshi as an actual otome MC and with Nobubu as the love interest. And it’s not a prank/joke!
