Vegans informing you of facts about animal agriculture are not “guilt tripping you.” Since when are we responsible for your emotional response to receiving factual information about the industries you choose to support? If you consume animal products, and choose not to find out how they are produced, how is it then our fault if you feel guilty when we tell you the things that you’d rather not know? It’s one thing to choose to remain ignorant, but expecting others to help you maintain that ignorance is quite another.
I’m literally so sick of uneducated people trying to demonize dairy farmers. Like… Do you know how cows work? Unhappy cows =/= milk. Dairy farmers want to be successful so they take good care of their cows. Seriously people, stop pretending you know what it’s like just because you’ve seen stupid propaganda from PETA or whatever. Go harass the factory farmers or someone who is actually doing bad stuff, for fuck’s sake.
“Unhappy cows =/= milk” ???? Where on earth does this idea come from?
So the dairy industry is immensely cruel, and this is true of ALL dairy farms, regardless of label, size or location. These cows have been genetically engineered to their extreme detriment to producing so much more ilk than is natural or healthy and they spend their too sort lives having their reproductive systems brutally exploited and their calves stolen from them repeatedly before they are slaughtered for their flesh at a fraction of their lifespan when they are no longer profitable enough to farmers for their milk. A quick reminder that this beautiful animal will end up in a slaughterhouse, brutally slaughtered for profit at a fraction of their lifespan (around 6 years old) when their bodies are too ravaged from such intense exploitation. The dairy industry is one of the cruelest in animal agriculture. Just one example is that cows spend seven months of every year simultaneously pregnant and producing large quantities of milk. This enormous physical demand (coupled with genetic engineering via selective breeding to maximize milk yield) means her average milk yield will be around 25 liters a day but can be up to 50 litres a day. In addition, a calf would normally feed five to six times a day so that the maximum amount of milk in her udder at any one time would be around two litres but on most dairy farms a cow is milked only twice a day, allowing milk to accumulate in the udder and can force her to carry around 20 litres of milk or more which greatly enlarges the udder and leads to lameness in her hind legs and predisposes her to mastitis (a painful infection of the udder) which affects 30% of UK dairy cows. This does not make for a “ happy cow” There seems to be a massive, either deliberate or non-deliberate spreading of “happy cow” propaganda and misinformation. And an odd but pretty telling name drop of PETA which, while is controversial amoung both vegans and non vegans/carnists for many valid reasons, has done great investigations into many forms of animal exploitations such as dairy farms, is not the only organization to have done such work and is an organization repeatedly used to somehow invalidate uncomfortable truths. As if footage of a slaughterhouse/farm is somehow invalidated if it comes from PETA activists instead of Viva activists or Animal Aid or Animal Equality etc.
If anyone reading wants to learn more about this horrific industry I will link to some sources of info below:

~ About Dairy Cows CIWF
~ Veal: All calves raised for veal worldwide are male calves that are by-products of the dairy industry. In many countries such as the USA veal crates are still the predominant rearing system. These tiny wooden crates are so narrow that the calves cannot turn around for most of their lives, depriving them of exercise and preventing normal muscle development – to keep their flesh “supple”. They are also fed an iron-deficient diet to produce the anemic ‘white’ veal prized by gourmets. Calves kept in these conditions suffer from high incidences of infectious disease and develop stereotyped behavior patterns such as tongue rolling, crate-licking or mutual tongue sucking. Veal crates were banned in the EU in 2007 but veal production (within any rearing system) still requires calves to be separated from their mothers within a day of birth. These calves are then placed in pens or hutches, alone or with several other calves, before they are sold to be reared mostly as ‘rose veal’. They are then slaughtered at around six months of age, although some may be older. The UK also exports calves to the EU to be raised for veal.
~ When it comes specifically to mother-calf bonds in cows, separation is incredibly detrimental and traumatic, as cows would naturally suckle their calves for nine months to a year after their long gestation period, just like other strongly maternal species, and the strong bond that is formed between mother and calf in the first few hours after birth makes this enforced separation a very traumatic experience. We also know the early separation of cow and calf has long-term effects on social behavior. Another study on forced separation of calves and their mothers (here) and one (here) and (here) and (here)

~ Dairy Farmers Are Killing Cows Younger To Maximise Profits
~ Here’s a link to with testimonials of former dairy farmers. A quote from a former dairy farmer I found incredibly powerful is “It is a deceptive place. Only the ones who are inside really know that. I am not talking about a one hour visit to the farm… Whoever is really inside, knows what kind of place it is. It’s hell. There is terrible suffering there… The screams of the mothers … I still hear the sound. It won’t go away. I keep thinking about it. Today I am a mother, and I don’t understand how people who say that they love animals don’t see it. Don’t understand it.” and“And they cried and called for their babies. They call and call.“ And a fab piece on a former dairy farmer who amazingly turned his farm into a sanctuary and is now a plant based farmer (here).
~ 73 Cows documentary
I interact with dairy farmers on a weekly basis and let me tell you, the “happiness” of the animals does not factor into milk production. It’s just noise for advertising and public image. They’re gonna make milk no matter how they feel. If animal rights activists (and welfarists, to a lesser extent) didn’t push so hard, they wouldn’t give a fuck about making it sound like their animals are happy. Coddling animals costs money and time, especially when they’re actually allowed to pasture, and the end goal of every single business is to spend as little money and time as possible to maximize profit.
Dairy farmers want to be successful, so they keep their animals alive long enough to wring them dry and then toss them aside to be killed for cheap meat. That’s not love, that’s deranged. If someone did it to a new bunch of dogs every few years they’d end up on the news with a Netflix documentary about how depraved they are.
Welfare will always come last to profit in these industries, as that is just the way of business and in this case its impossible to make a profit without forcibly impregnating these cows into bodies they will suffer greatly in due to genetic engineering, keeping them in captivity, denying them of important instinctive and natural behaviors/lives, stealing their newborn babies and brutally slaughtering them at a fraction of their natural lifespan when they are “spent” and no longer profitable. Thank you for your great addition @sonnendrache You are absolutely correct and if it was dogs, cats etc. having the same practices inflicted into them there would be outrage!
Friendly reminder: Someone holding you accountable is not the same as someone “attacking” you
To every anti-vegan in my askbox every damn day.
I saw an argument against veganism on twitter that basically said “…animal agriculture employs a lot of people, do you want them all to be jobless??”
Job loss is inevitable in any industry as things get more automated. I guarantee if the chicken industry could have robots pick up the birds & shove them in crates & more robots to shackle them to the kill line they 100% would fire everyone in favor of automation.
I feel for the underpaid workers in animal agriculture, it would be devastating for them to lose their jobs, but we cannot use that as an excuse to keep killing billions of animals & the planet. We have to adjust & adapt.
Hello…I’m here…..!

It is ok to be “that annoying vegan.” Veganism isn’t just a lifestyle choice, it is a moral imperative. When you make an ethical decision you aren’t just deciding that this is wrong for you; it isn’t like saying apples are nicer than oranges. People don’t believe prejudice is wrong just for them, or adultery, or abusive behavior. Ethical statements are truth claims; you are professing the belief that this thing is wrong. For everyone. It is every bit of ok to be “that annoying vegan” because that stereotype only exists to silence us.
Shut the hell up
“Moral imperative” Basically you’re trash saying that animal lives matter more than the poor Latin@ and other various POC who work like slaves to provide you with your 100% organic produce.
I wonder why you think that? One of the most dangerous industries on earth is the animal agriculture industry. It has one of the highest rates of limb loss and appendage loss- and guess who most of the workers are? Also, it has a massive rate of PTSD (slaughtering animals doesn’t make most people feel good) and again, that’s predominantly for POC workers.
Yes, vegetable growing often exploits workers too- but are you telling me you don’t eat vegetables?
You actually eat more, just indirectly. It takes 17 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of beef. Even the “smallest footprint” meat, chicken, takes 2 pounds of gain for every pound of chicken.
You can advocate for better working conditions for workers and care about animals- they’re not mutually exclusive. Please think about going vegan.
Hey fellow black (and brown) people, Can we Please For The Love Of God stop making this same argument whenever veganism is brought up, Especially since You Obviously Don’t Know How Animal Agriculture Harms The Lives Of Black And Non-Black POC Every Fucking Place? There Are Literally Thousands of Vegans of Color Who are Vegan precisely for this reason? Thanks, I’m tired of it.
bf: come over
me: i can’t im eating leaves
bf: my parents aren’t home
me: im a vegan
imagine if vegans spent their time trying to convince people to lobby the industry to have safer, more humane, and more climate-conscious practices instead of trying to convince people not to eat animal products. like humans don’t have to stop eating meat, we just have to stop producing it irresponsibly. if vegans were able to mobilize non-vegans against the meat industry instead of trying to convince them that meat is inherently bad we’d already be making changes.
What if boycotting animal products is what makes the world a safer, more humane, and more climate-conscious place?
We are already making changes. Vegans are even indirectly making non-vegans more welfare-conscious and that pushes for less meat. Humans, at this point, need to absolutely minimise their animal product consumption for us to have any reasonable effect on our environment and the animals within the industries. Animal agriculture in most countries is already at peak welfare for the amount of animals we produce each year and animals are still actively getting harmed throughout the process because animal agriculture is inherently inhumane. The next step from here is literally reducing our consumption of animal products because you cannot increase the welfare of these animals further within compromising production.
I am so sick of non-vegans trying to tell vegans how to advocate for the rights of the animals they have no intention of protecting.
mentally ill vegans exist. stop erasing us and using us as a gotcha argument in order to justify your unwillingness to exert yourself a little for the benefit of literally the entire planet
I’m just gonna leave this here…
Why is boycott an effective and encouraged form of activism in almost every social justice context, but as soon as it’s about veganism boycott is useless garbage and “there’s no ethical cosumption under capitalism” instead of being a call to action becomes an excuse to do nothing??
Stop eating animals!
