Description

"The Entrance of Love and Wealth at Gamache's Wedding" (Entrée de l'Amour et de la Richesse aux Noces de Gamache) is a famous 18th-century artwork based on an episode from Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. It shows an allegorical theatrical performance where personified concepts of Love and Wealth arrive at an opulent wedding feast.

In the novel, Camacho (often translated as Gamache) is a very rich man who is set to marry the beautiful Quiteria (Kitri). However, she is truly in love with a poor young man named Basilio.

Gamache prepares an extravagant, massive wedding celebration with endless food and lavish displays. During the festivities, an allegorical dance or play is performed featuring the physical representations - or entrances - of Love (Amor/Cupid) and Wealth, debating their relative power over human hearts.

Before the wedding is completed, Basilio fakes his own suicide, tricking Quiteria into giving him her hand in marriage before he "dies." Once they are married, Don Quixote intervenes to protect the young couple, convincing a graceful Gamache to yield.
