Why the Empire Will Never Win

or A Star Wars Story About Love And Redemption

  Ever since coming back from Rogue One, I’ve been bursting with feelings that need an outlet so I decided to write this meta. It’s lengthy, it’s full of gifs, it’s full of love for all the characters and their relationships and what that means in the wider Star Wars context. This post is about why Rogue One is a perfect culmination of something that is Star Wars to me, even if it may not be a perfect movie in its own right. That something is the triumph of the personal over the impersonal; it is the importance of bonds; it is, in some way, the very essence of what it means to be human and humane and if all of this strikes you as trivial or overanalytical then I don’t know what to tell you because yes, these are simple concepts, but they are universal and enduring and there’s nothing wrong with telling stories that are larger than life in plot, intimate in character design and straightforward in both. It’s what has made Star Wars a global phenomenon for so long, a fairytale turned modern mythology.
