brows  furrow  as  he  watches  callum  remove  something  from  his  uniform,  trying  to  steady  his  racing  heart.  ven  hated  goodbye's  ;  even  see  you  later's  put  him  on  edge  when  the  stakes  were  high  (  and  weren't  they  always  high  when  people  were  leaving  him?  ).  chewing  the  inside  of  his  cheek,  ven  tries  to  tell  himself  to  calm  down.  if  callum  calls  him  out  on  how  weird  he's  being,  ven  isn't  sure  he  can  play  smooth  enough  to  cover  up  the  fact  that  he's  freaking  the  fuck  out.

breath  catches  in  his  throat  as  callum  takes  his  hand,  and  as  curious  as  he  is  about  the  trinket  being  placed  in  his  hand,  he  looks  up  at  callum  to  study  his  face.  ven  had  come  to  learn  that  while  callum  seemed  cold  and  tough  on  the  exterior,  he  wasn't  like  that  underneath  it  all.  not  to  the  people  close  to  him,  at  least.  ven  had  been  lucky  enough  to  find  himself  one  of  those  people.

gaze  falls  back  to  their  hands  and,  despite  himself,  the  corners  of  his  eyes  prick  with  tears.  he  wants  to  ask  him  to  stay,  wants  to  beg  him  not  to  leave,  but  ven  isn't  stupid.  this  is  callum's  job.  he  can't  just  ask  him  to  disobey  orders  because  he's  afraid  callum  doesn't  want  to  come  back  to  him.  swallowing  past  the  lump  in  his  throat,  he  lets  out  a  shaky  breath  and  raises  his  free  hand,  resting  it  over  callum's.

"i'll  protect  it  with  my  life.  i  mean,  you  have  to  come  back  for  it,  right?  your  uniform  would  look  silly  without  it."  he  laughs,  something  light  and  breathy,  not  quite  meeting  callum's  gaze.  silence  falls  between  them  and  he  steps  forward,  gently  resting  his  forehead  against  his  chest.  he  breathes  him  in  .  .  .  not  for  the  last  time,  he  reminds  himself.  callum  has  promised  to  come  back.
