Two nights a week, Vera liked to treat herself. Once her work had been done, she took a shower, used a homemade sugar scrub to exfoliate, and settled into her dormitory with a mud mask and a glass or two of Sangiovese. This time was often used for reflection, but this evening Vera’s luxuriant mood was impeded upon by the fact that she hadn’t received a lick of correspondence from her friends in days.

It was true that Olya had written to her a few times in early September, checking in and generally being her thoughtful self. But Vera’s last message, detailing Sergei’s atrocious behavior at the Conclave, had not been responded to. She tried not to dwell, but such things deserved quick response, and not getting one was an ominous note. Her face was scrubbed clean but her thoughts remained dangerously fixated on the situation at hand. Grom did his best to distract her as she sulked, meowing loudly for attention then rolling onto his back for her to stroke his tummy introspectively. The sirens wailed into the night and Vera found that annoying. She did not want to report to Karuzos Hall, she wanted to finish her regimen and then sleep in peace. Vera reluctantly dressed, loathe as she was to change out of her pajamas, it was best to be prepared for the eventuality of being stuck in Karuzos for any amount of time-- not to mention she was really not looking for the kind of attention her pajamas would attract. Once again preparing for the eventuality of the sequestration in the other building, Vera grabbed a bag and began packing it. Her extensive nail kit, the Canadian shamans she’d abandoned while talking to Roisin earlier in the week, the rest of her wine, all of it went into the bag. Grom went too, although he really was not too pleased at all. Vera ignored his plaintive cries, assuming better safe than sorry in all situations did not exclude pet ownership. Karuzos was a crowded and ultimately sorry mess, but Vera hadn’t much cause to care. She found a seat towards one of the inner walls-- no way was she taking the chance that any outside noise would stress her out-- and freed Grom from his prison. He sat near her but not in her lap, a surefire sign of his displeasure with the situation as a whole. The Headmaster spoke after a short time, and as the other students scrambled to volunteer within and without, Vera hooked her nail kit out of her bag’s murky depths and set to work. “What are you doing?” a voice inquired, incredulous. “My nails.” Her answer was flat but not forceful, considering she had no idea who she was speaking to. Vera was not at all bothered to drag her gaze from the nail in question that she was filing. “Really? You’re not going to help? In a time of crisis?” Vera finally glanced up, only to have someone she certainly didn’t recognize giving her a look of distaste. Her gaze locked fully on the American, noting unkindly that he looked remarkably like a rodent. “Are you telling me I’m in immediate danger?” “Well, no.” “Right. And I wasn’t the one who let these creatures out to run amok on campus. So let me do my nails while whoever made this mess sorts it out. Have a wonderful morning.” He walked away and Vera went back to her filing. She’d be damned if she was going to be guilted into being miserable for no reason at all.

Susana thought her words for a moment before speaking. She didn’t want to upset the girl even more than she already was. “Well, for example,you could’ve taken a potion instead of your drink by mistake. Or maybe someone wanted to play some kind of prank on you.” Maybe those words hadn’t been her best option. She cleared her throat and tried to smile. “Anyway, I’m sure it’s not irreversible.”

The wail startled Vera and no doubt passersby. “Pranked?!” Immediately her thoughts were turned upon her step-brother, and they were murderous. “I’ll kill him, I swear I will.” Her lips felt like they had wobbled together enough, and a hand slapped over her inflated lips.

“I think that’s your own fault choosing this boredom,” Roisin wrinkled her nose as she looked over Vera’s books. “But as I’m feeling particularly enchanted by the lone freckle on your wrist, how can I possibly deny you an afternoon?” Standing up, Roisin led the way. “Salem is cesspool of germs and fun, Vera. It’s our oyster.”

Vera’s expression remained impassive. “I don’t see how anyone could ever deny me anything,” she confided in the Irish girl, casually flipping her hair over one shoulder. “Just what in this germy cesspool of an oyster are you looking to do? You’re not giving a single answer, Mulligan, it’s more than a little off-putting.”

“Because far too many people don’t get enough adrenaline pumping through them on a daily basis. I figured, carin’ so much about people’s health and all, that I’d help them out a bit. Besides, it’s wonderful for those with hiccups.” Roisin offered, despite the fact that between the two of them and anyone else in the library, everyone was sans hiccups. “How long have you spent cooped up in here?”

“Of course, those hiccups are terrible.” Vera nodded sagely before continuing. There wasn’t much point that she could see to being afraid of such helpful creatures. “I’ve been locked away for hours, Roisin. I trust you’re here to alleviate any lingering boredom?”

The other girl sounded terribly worried, making Susana think on other solutions. “Hey, don’t worry,” she said, doing her best to sound reassuring. “If the spell didn’t work that just means that it wasn’t an allergy. There are plenty of other reasons why your mouth could be like this.” A potion or a curse were some of the options, but she didn’t mention them out loud. The last thing she wanted was the other girl getting even more upset.

“What reasons? What did I do to deserve this?” Vera tugged at the ends of her hair, frustrated. “Nothing I’ve done this evening is out of the ordinary!”

It was as if fearing spiders were a thing of that past– Even the prissy girl didn’t so much as flinch at it. Locking eyes with her, Vera scooted the spider back to her desk and Roisin let out a heavy sigh as she rose to her seat, magically flinging the spider behind her somewhere. There was a distant scream, but she paid it no mind. “Hello Vera, what’re you doin’ this fine afternoon?”

“I was reading,” Vera answered pleasantly, sitting up straighter and folding a corner of the page. She used the past tense of the verb, knowing even then that a conversation with Roisin required a fair bit of her attention that left no room for shamans. “Any particular reason that you’re traumatizing people with arachnids?”

Roisin bent behind her book, fixated on the magic she was practicing. With so many students well-versed in wandless magic, she thought she’d brush up on it, rusty from lack of using it for less pressing things. Carefully, she waved her hand, making the spider in front of her dance on the table. Then she got the better idea to make it crawl onto the book of her unsuspecting neighbor.

Vera’s focus was entirely on the shamans of Saskatchewan and their purported ability to adopt more than one animagus form when a spider appeared to crawl in circles over the page. Her forehead wrinkled for a moment, peering around and wondering just what to do with the thing. After a moment, she did spot the culprit, an awfully strong-eyebrowed young woman, and magically flung the spider right back on her desk.

Susana nodded and took her wand out of her little purse. She concentrated, pointing at the girl’s mouth before casting the spell under her breath and giving a little tap on the air with the wand. She counted a couple seconds before casting the spell again and lowering her wand. “Do you feel better?”

Her hand brushed her lips to check: no change. The skin felt tight, and she worried that her lips were going to burst. “Oh, that didn’t work!” Vera wailed. “What’s wrong with me? Will it go away? Am I supposed to look like this forever?” Thoroughly distraught now, Vera sounded more like a petulant child than ever.

“There has to be,” Susana replied with a thoughtful expression. “I know a spell to help with allergies, in case that’s the reason.” She had learnt it from a friendly wizard she’d met on a small trip to Reykjavik a couple years ago. It was a simple spell and she had found it to be extremely useful during her trips. “I could try casting it to see what happens. If it’s an allergy, then it should get better almost immediately.”

“Yes, yes!” The words were muffled, but bordering on hysteria again. Vera was taking careful stock of her breaths now, almost absently pleased to note that her tongue and throat were unaffected.

“Yeah?” August asked again, clarifying if he’d heard right. “We’re gonna need to take a pit stop at my dorm, but that shouldn’t take long.” He began walking in the direction of Jonker Hall. But as he walked, he thought to himself and then looked her over. “Maybe you should go to yours too and you know, prep yourself something to sweat in.”

“We live in the same dormitory,” Vera pointed out, swinging her bag up onto her shoulder. Mentally she was already sorting through her closet. The pink top with her favorite black yoga pants would do the trick. “But I’ll meet you on the pitch.” Not waiting for a response, she turned and flounced out of the library.

“Teach me a fact then,” August jerked his head to the side. “The field should be open now– It’s barely one and all the actual Salem students are still in class.” It was pretty granted the other Summit students didn’t spend every hour playing sports. “I brought some extra gear with me.”

She stared at him for a moment, eyes narrowing slightly. Hands curling around the cover over her book, she snapped it shut decisively. Tucking it and her abandoned notes into her bag, she stood. “Fine. Lead the way.”

August snorted. “Coming from the girl who said ‘magnificent’ was the bare minimum for herself. Right, of course, sorry.”

“Bragging is far different than stating facts!” Vera protested. ”I just can’t guarantee I’m magnificent with quidditch, yet. I have no intentions of giving you any false hope.” But she was fairly sure it wouldn’t be too bad.

“Well, let’s not jinx ourselves,” she defended primly. “Pride does often come before a fall, you know. And while I haven’t played for nearly half a decade, I’m careful not to brag.”
