“…whispering and giggling with her gang of slytherin girls.”

He has no choice but to let her lead him away from the classrooms, down the hallway a bit. The desire to shrug her arm off of his shoulders is strong, but he can’t bring himself to be that, no matter who she was. After all, she is trying to help him in her own way, even if it is for her own ulterior motives. There’s no way he’d ever feel completely comfortable accepting help of this nature, but he didn’t want to be out of the running immediately just because he wasn’t willing to consider other options as well. Still, it feels like a lot of trouble for someone like her to go through to help him if the only reason was that she didn’t want Potter to win. Then again, he’d seen how petty some of the Slytherins could be, so maybe it did make sense. “I don’t know if Sprout would help, even though she is my Head of House, I’m already basically failing Herbology, but Flitwick does love me, I’m really good at Charms,” Cedric says thoughtfully. Her next suggestion, though, took him off guard. It seemed easier with Sprout or Flitwick, less need to lie. But she was suggesting he lie Madam Pomfrey, and do it skillfully, which was a lot like asking him to grow a temperamental plant without killing it; an impossibility. “Yeah, it makes sense….I’m not very good at lying, Daphne,” he admits, as if anyone who looked at him would think anything but just that. He’s good at lying about certain things, his own private thoughts, his desires, things that could hurt people, but not this sort of lying, that kind that’s so easy for everyone else.
“How are you even....” She frowns. A Hufflepuff failing Herbology sounds impossible to her, Sprout is way too nice for anyone to fail her classes, and on top of that they basically live among plants or whatever. Shouldn’t he be good at it as their golden child? Ugh, there’s no way that Goblet picked the best champion out of this school. No way. “You know what, it doesn’t matter. I’ll find someone to help you with Herbology so you don’t have to worry about failing anymore,” Daphne smiles and nods, “and that’s still a very good second choice. But I still think you should try Pompfrey first, it’d be pointless going to Flitwick if he knows nothing, you know?” She shrugs and then looks at Cedric trying to think of a plan. This entire thing is much more complicated than it should be, it really is. “Would you prefer it if I, like, I don’t know... break one of your arms or something? I mean, that sounds incredibly dramatic for no reason, but if you really can’t lie, I can make the sacrifice. Say it was an accident or something. I’ll take you to the hospital wing myself even.”

The moment Daphne mentioned Cho Chang, Millicent couldn’t help but wrinkle her nose in disgust. Why her friend bothered in being nice to the Ravenclaw, she was never going to understand. She only seemed like an annoying little thing. “Wait, wait, wait, you lost me here. You’re saying Cho is going to cheat on lover boy Diggory with Krum? And that will give Diggory more motivation or whatever? That’s way too complicated Daph. I still think we should break Potter’s legs. We could make it look like an accident. I know you don’t like partnering with Gryffindors, but I could talk to Cormac. He’s chummy with Diggory, I’m sure he doesn’t want Potter to win any more than you do.” She shrugged. “Dumbledore let him participate in the first place, he doesn’t seem too worried about his favourite kid dying if you ask me.”
“I mean, if we’re lucky!” She snorts, “No no, it’s not, listen to me. It’ll work, it’s not complicated at all, we just have to not bite Cho’s head off when she’s in our common room, the rest will happen on its own. I mean, Diggory might get sad for a day or two, but he’s not stupid enough to let someone like her ruin his championship. It’s easy, I swear.” Daphne nods and then shakes her hands in front of her. Not this again. “There’s no way Potter breaking both of his legs can look like an accident, Mills. They’re going to think someone’s sabotaging him. Which.. we are, but they can’t know that.” She chuckles and ignores the comment about Cormac. “Or! He’s going to try make him win, so he knows he’s not going to die.”

Cedric narrows his eyes slightly, trying to suss out exactly what she means with the why not, as if she’s not the one who brought up things he couldn’t afford. There has to be some kind of ulterior motive, because he can’t imagine someone like her willingly going out of her way to him someone like him. He might’ve been good at staying optimistic and kind, but he’s not stupid; he knows what the vast majority of the Slytherins think about him. Then again he guesses the only thing they hate more than someone they consider a soft, half-blood Hufflepuff, is Harry Potter. Maybe that really was all this was about. He frowns as she goes on about what the other champions will do, hating to admit that she’s right. He doesn’t like the idea of doing anything that could be close to cheating, but if everyone else is going to be getting help, and he has a feeling they will, he won’t stand a chance if he’s the only one not. “Believe me, ah know she’s here tae win…” he mutters more to himself. And he wants to win, no matter what anyone might think. “Ah guess you’re right. Ah don’t want tae lose just because I’m the only one playin’ fair… But ah don’t even know where tae start…who do ah even ask?”
“Well, fret no more! That’s what I was talking about, I’m here to help our school champion bring us the trophy,” Daphne grins and nods, then wraps an arm around his and takes him away from the classroom. Teachers would probably understand missing a few classes anyway, being as busy and as famous as the real Hogwarts champion should be, right? There’s life or death situations that he’s going to be facing, classes might be important but just... not as much. “Let’s see, I don’t think Snape is going to be helpful.” She shakes her head, “He probably wants you to win, but he’s still... you know. So not him, I think your Head of House might help you if she really likes you, but there’s a chance she might not because she doesn’t want to look like she’s playing favorites. McGonagall is definitely not going to help, not because she doesn’t want to but because she’ll care a lot about the rules, and you don’t want to make her angry. Flitwick might be a good choice, but then again between him and Sprout, I’m not really sure.” Daphne sighs and then snaps her fingers on her free hand, “I know what you should do! Pomfrey’s a good source for this, that big gossip. She’s no Rita Skeeter, but I know that woman knows more than she acts like she does. So... you pretend your stomach hurts, or your head, or literally anything I don’t care, then ask her a few questions. Maybe who she thinks knows more about the tournament besides Dumbledore, or which one of the teachers likes you better. But be subtle about it, you just... have to sound like you’re curious about who your supporters are going to be. Does that make sense?” Daphne turns and looks at him.

“What if you’re making conversation while eating? I’m very popular you know so it takes me at least half an hour on an off day to finish my meal. Doesn’t that happen to you? I thought that you were popular too, oh no or is it your sister I’m thinking of?” He very well knew who she was, but he also knew that mixing up his name would piss him off –so he assumed the same for her. That’s what she gets for not accepting his compliment. “Of course not. I’m welcoming of new peers. You’re the only one who is bothered –the Beauxbatons girls making you feel inferior?”
“Well... you rush it in that case, I guess. Or you keep conversing on your way out,” she shrugs. Or you stop thinking you’re all that and realize half of the people you’re talking to don’t even like you, in his case, but she can’t say that. “Please, the fact that you can’t even remember Astoria’s name enough to say it out loud is clearly a sign that it’s not her you’re thinking of. She’s lovely, but having a big group of friends isn’t really her thing,” Daphne sighs and smiles, “hey, I was just saying.” She raises her hands in defense, “you’ve got a badge, maybe they’re asking you for directions all the time, or something like that. Or maybe first years are getting overwhelmed, who knows. It was a sincere question, goodness!” Daphne rolls her eyes, “So much for a Head Boy. They should’ve given that badge to Diggory, at least he’s nicer.”

“I mean, it’s important to be the bigger person… And honestly, as much as I don’t particularly love the idea of being surrounded by strangers, it’s important to not be jagged and make an effort to be welcoming… As unpleasant as I can get.’ He shrugs passively, more so raised to be polite than enjoying the fact. Rubbing his eyes, he waves dismissively to her question. ‘’It’s nothin’, it’s nothin’… Just an early practice is all. And honestly, I ‘aven’t a damn clue who the hell that is? But I don’t need to defend my skill to anybody, my recond ‘n my teams speaks for itself. I’ve told it to Marcus, told it to Roger ‘n Cedric, tell it to you too.” He scoffs. “Why’re you talkin’ like you’ve never seen a match anyway?”
“Yeah well, I guess it’s easier for some people than others. You don’t have to deal with all those moody Dumstang kids in your way all day,” she makes a face and shakes her head. Gryffindors should’ve gotten them anyways, would’ve distracted them from their Harry Potter arse smooching for a couple of days at the very least. “Draco? Draco Malfoy? You don’t---” Daphne blinks confused, “like, you really genuinely don’t know, even with how loud he is about himself and his last name, and his family, like... all the time? Wow. It’s going to be great to see what he looks like when I tell him, I can’t wait.” She chuckles, “I haven’t. I mean, I’ve gone to most of them obviously, but I don’t really watch them, I don’t care that much honestly.”
iamflinting:
“I don’t believe you’re any less self-centered than me, I think you just try to deny it. C’mon you want people to know you’re hot doing your makeup in the open.” Even though she’s clearly not joking he laughs (not being the brightest boy)–something that girls who don’t know any better seem to find charming. “You want me to stare.”
“Why are you avoiding them? I just finished practicing on the pitch, best time to get to it.”
“No sweetie, you hold the record, trust me--- I just happen to be fixing my make up here, that’s all,” she shrugs and then makes a face, “ew stop. Don’t make this a you thing, there’s bigger richer fish in the sea for me to catch. And you’d stare regardless, I don’t need to put any effort for that.” Daphne shakes her head. “They’re annoying, and way too many, and way too loud. Most of the times at least. Not to mention Krum seems to always be mad even though I’m not sure what’s gotten into them. I don’t have time for that kind of thing.”
fantasticalee:
——- “Who’s looking good? Because that lipstick makes you look like a troll. Or maybe it’s just because you’re ugly on the inside. That tends to make people look like shit.” Lee smiled cheekily at the girl in front of him. There was something about certain Slytherins’ attitudes that managed to push every single one of his buttons, and Daphne Greengrass seemed to be a specialist when it came to that. “I like the crowd actually. You should consider locking yourself up inside the dungeons. I’m sure Snape can use some company while he’s eating the soul of innocent children.”
“Yeah yeah alright, Peeves. Like a give a damn what you think,” Daphne snorts and rolls her eyes, shaking her head. If her ego wasn’t big enough by now, she wouldn’t have made it into Pansy’s crew. It was a toughen up your skin or leave kinda deal with those girls back in first year, not to mention her mother and grandmother’s tutoring growing up. She knows who she is and how she looks, it doesn’t matter who says otherwise. “Nah, the school is ours not theirs, so...” she shrugs, “but I’ll make sure to let him know you think so, I’m sure he’ll love that.”
iamflinting:
There’s no possible force that can stop him from chucking –and loudly as a matter of fact. His mocking introduction to the space is bouncing off the walls before he thinks of a syllable to utter. “Greengrass you shouldn’t have to get up this early to pretend you’re enhancing your face to get a compliment. Is your self esteem that low today?”
“Oh, sorry! I forgot you expect everyone to be that self centered as you, right.” Daphne rolls her eyes and slaps his arm, chuckling. “You let me wear my make up without you staring, and I’ll try my best not to snap at you immediately, how about that?” She smiles and shrugs, “What are you doing here early anyway? I know I’m avoiding the new kids, but I didn’t think that many people cared about that.”

He frowns, not at all convinced by her insistence. Her hands playing with his tie like it’s the most normal thing in the world just confuses him even more. Before he can ask if that’s true, though, if they all really wanted him to win when it sounded like most people were just as mad a Hufflepuff got chosen as an extra kid, she goes on, and he’s distracted in a different way. Because he hasn’t thought about any of that. Katie had made him promise that he would ask for help if he became champion, that he’d look for support, but he’d mostly just taken that to mean moral support, not anything like what Daphne was considering. “Are you sayin’ you want to sponsor me?” he asks, skepticism clear in his voice. The inflection on the word sponsor makes it more than apparent that what he really means is bribe, but he has a feeling throwing out a word like that will just make things worse. It’s a tempting offer, that’s the real problem, because she’s probably right about needing access to things he couldn’t get on his own. But everything she’s suggesting sounds a little too close to cheating for him to want to agree. “Ah could, but… we’re not supposed to ask anyone for help; we’re meant to get through the tasks on our own. Ah don’t want tae cheat.”
“Sure, sponsor-- why not?” She shrugs. Whatever. As long as he gets to win over Potter, it’s all fair and square. Not like she doesn’t have the money for it, and her father would probably prefer she helps him win rather than having Harry Potter of all Hogwarts kids take the glory. No way. “I mean, is it really cheating if all the other champions do it too? Don’t let them fool you, sweetheart. That Beauxbatons girl might be pretty, but she’s here to win and she knows what she’s doing, she will ask for help from anyone and everyone. Not like they won’t do whatever she pleases with a face like that. And I know Krum doesn’t look like the smartest on the crowd, but Karkaroff is, and he’s going to get him to the first place even if his life depends on it. And Potter...” Daphne sighs and tries not to roll her eyes again, “Potter is Potter, he gets help even when he doesn’t ask for it. You’ll fall on last place fast if you don’t use those eyes darling, play along the game, don’t let the game play you.” She nods and gently pats his chest, “Trust me.”
