If you want to survive, you have to become the girl whose body you chose. That was the advice her mother had given her and... for most of her life, it had worked for her. But here, in the body of this girl, she was starting to have her doubts. Why couldnât she just... be herself, for once? âHello? Whoâs there?â
âIf I have to deal with one more idiot newly turned vampire thinking that everyone is a meal Iâll actually screamâ
âOkay, hear me out. I promise, Iâm not a vampire, but I think I can make a case. Because technically speaking, everyone is a meal. Like, hey, if we can eat it, why not, right? Vampires drink blood, donât they? So I guess technically not a meal, but a drink, but if they look like a tall glass of water, whatâs the harm in taking a sip? That might have been a poor uh, ....thereâs a word for that.â
This was why she was supposed to remain disconnected, why she wasnât supposed to engage supernatural in conversation. Because honestly, how was she supposed to kill a young boy pleading with her, as if she were some all-powerful god with the right to take his life? âIâm not going to kill you.â At least, she didnât think she was going to. She remembered being there, helping her family as they took them out one by one. The screams hadnât fazed her because she learned how to drown them out. âBut if youâre back⊠that means youâre going to kill more people.â And there was the conflict. She understood why her parents did what they did. Some supernatural couldnât be let roam free. So what exactly was she supposed to do here?
She said she wasnât going to kill him, but that didnât stop Joseph from being absolutely terrified. She had been there, had helped kill his entire family, and that wasnât something that could just be erased with one measly promise-- and heâd like to point out, it wasnât even a promise. âBut-â He took another step back, feeling sheepish and nearly too afraid to talk. Nearly. "I never killed nobody, miss. Momma always brought me food, I donât know how to get food myself.â But... if getting food meant killing people, Joseph wasnât sure why that was a bad thing.
Danny might not have been able to understand him, but he knew. How was this even possible? Sure, he had heard of people coming back- hell, even Auntie Ellen was here- but skinwalkers went to Purgatory, right? How was he back? Not that he cared, not even slightly. In fact, he would be happy never knowing the answer. Danny pulled back a little, with some difficulty, tears running down his face, but a grin plastered on his lips. âIs Dana with you? The others?â Did he have his family back?
Joseph was excited, his tail wagging so hard it would probably bruise if it hit skin, but the moment Danny mentioned their family, it stopped.. Not entirely, not so much that his excitement would be missed, with with a little whimper it was probably clear what the answer was. He licked at Dannyâs face, tasting the salt in his tears as a way to comfort him. It was just him.

âThereâs really no way to point out who you can and cannot eat. I say eat whoever you want.â The woman he had been eyeing was better than nothing. He grabbed Joey around the arm, dragging him with him. Once he advanced on the lady, he grabbed her, too. Teleporting them all to a more secure area. He reached out to touch her, and when she dropped to the ground and started convulsing, he looked back towards Joey. âFor now, weâll go with her.â She was dead within the minute. He didnât think Joey could see her soul, but Cassius could see it. And she was eyeing him like he was some sort of monster. âBugger off, lady.â He would fetch her soul later. But for now? He had better things to be tending to. Like, teaching this kid how to feed. âTransform into your actual form and start eating away at the chest cavity. Eventually youâll hit the heart. Itâs easy.â
Eat whoever you want sounded like the best thing that Joseph had heard since he came back. He was hungry and the entire world was an all you can eat buffet? He loved those places! Though, heâd be kinda sad if he ate any of his friends, but he didnât have to. It was whoever he wanted, not everyone. Joseph let the reaper pull him along, feeling a smile tug at his lips. Were they friends now? He hoped they were friends, but.. now didnât seem the time to ask. They teleported and the woman was dead, and Joseph didnât care because he was hungry. âYouâre the best. I know I havenât told you yet because I was kind of scared of you for awhile, but youâre literally the best in the whole wide world. â But he wasnât gonna continue on whatever tangent he wanted to go off on, because he had food in front of him and he wasnât going to not eat. So he smiled at Cassius and let the shift take over him, changing him from his 16 year old self into the golden retriever that his other form took. And then he wasted no time digging in.
âDo you always act like a five year old?â He never had a mother. He just had Death. And he couldnât say that was father or mother material. But at least Death taught him how to do his job. âYour momma isnât here to help you. I say grow the fuck up, kid. Youâre what. Sixteen? Seventeen? You should be getting your own food by now. Iâll tell you what. Iâll help you this time. In order to retrieve a heart, they need to be dead. Unless youâre one for violence. Iâve never pulled a heart straight from the cavity, but thatâs what youâre here for.â
Joseph frowned. He didnât actively dislike a lot of people, but this guy was mean. First he took him to that bad place, and now he was making fun of him. âI donât act like a five year old, Iâm just younger.â He was 16, but after being babied his whole life, it was kind of hard not to act and even feel like he was younger than he was. But maybe Cassius wasnât all that bad. He was offering to help Joseph get food right? This time. What was he supposed to do the other times? âWill you please? I donât know what Iâm supposed to do, she always just brought them home for me and we ate them then. I donât even know how Iâm supposed to choose who to eat, but-â His stomach rumbled and that was answer enough.
He seemed to run into everyone in this town. It was quite exhausting, if he had to be completely honest. âCareful now. You wouldnât want to attack the wrong person.â He knew there were hunters out there. They could literally be disguised as anyone walking down the road. Thankfully, Cassius wanted to be seen by humans today. So, at least they wouldnât think Joey was insane if he started to talk to thin air. âSkinwalkers tend to feed pretty often. Given the look on your face, Iâm going to assume youâre missing out.âÂ
Josephâs eyes were trained on one woman for what felt like ages. She was pretty, her purse dangling by her side in an almost careless way. She seemed in a hurry, but Joey wanted to follow her and- He snapped out of it when he heard the voice next to him, completely caught off guard. How had he not noticed Cassius there before? âI...â He trailed off, almost at a loss for words. Almost. âI donât know how to do it, my momma always got food for me and I donât know how to do it.â
Akila felt the sudden urge to strangle the kid. âThatâs not-â He attempted to interject, but he was like a fucking windup toy - once he started going he didnât stop. âIt wasnât confusing, asshole. It was irritating, itâs still irritating. Have you ever tried letting some thoughts stay in your oddly shaped head?â Akila felt instant dread upon asking him a question, thinking it may make him go on yet another spiel. âHereâs an exercise for you, you can answer that, but only in five words or less. Iâm being generous.â
Joseph almost instantly opened his lips to start letting the words spill out, but once again the other interjected and he stopped for a moment, looking thoughtful. âLess than five words? Or, wait, five words or less, thatâs a difference because that gives me one more word, at least. But I need a second, because I havenât really tried to do it in so little words and Iâm not sure if I can.â Then as if thinking out loud to himself, he started to mutter under his breath. âNo, I normally just say whatever comes to my brain whenever I think about it, so itâs kinda hard to try and do that now. Hmmmm, how can I shorten that? No, I normally just say whatever comes to my brain.â And then, counting on fingers. âNo. I normally just say.... Hmmmmm.â Like a lightbulb dinging over his head, Joseph looked at Akila-- he just discovered the best answer. âI got it!â A pause, and then, âNo.â
Joseph wasnât sure how long itâd been. Technically, itâd been over a year- since he died, but... How long? Since heâd been alive? Since heâd eaten? He was so hungry he was shaking and he just... how was he supposed to get food? His mom never taught him, she had always done it for him. For the first time in a long time, he was silent, looking at every person who passed by like they were a fresh slice of pizza.
