“Don’t laugh,” Jules said, setting her sketchpad down on the table. “But…okay, you probably have heard that I’ve started seeing this guy, and we’re going on our first date tonight. Thing is..”

“…I haven’t been kissed. Ever. And I don’t want him to think I’m some smelly fish with these cold, inexperienced lips of mine.” Okay, so she was babbling now, and she turned her body to face him fully.

Ever since she moved in next door to him, she’d gotten to know Jack very well, to the point where she trusted him enough with her life and her secrets…and her inexperience. Like slipping into his favorite hoodie after a long day. With her, he didn’t have to think too hard about what to say or how to act. He could just… be. Tease her a little, laugh at her dumb jokes, sit in silence while she sketched, and none of it ever felt awkward. He blinked at her for a second, completely caught off guard. A small, surprised laugh escaped him before he could stop it, but he quickly raised his hands in surrender. “Whoa, whoa, okay... don’t kill me for laughing, I’m not laughing at you, I swear,” he said, his voice warm but still a little amused. He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to process what she’d just asked.

He looked at Jules properly, seeing how red her face was and how nervous she looked, and his expression softened right away. “Jules… come on, you really think your lips are gonna be cold and smelly or whatever?” He shook his head, smiling gently. “That’s ridiculous. You’re not a smelly fish, you dork.” He paused for a second, letting the silence settle so she didn’t feel like he was just teasing her. Then he leaned forward a little, resting his elbows on his knees. “Look… yeah. I can teach you,” he said, his voice quieter now, more serious. “If that’s what you actually want. I’m not gonna make fun of you or anything like that. You know me better than that.” He glanced down at the sketchpad she’d set aside, then back up at her flushed face. “But only if you’re sure. I don’t want you to feel weird about it later. And we can take it as slow as you need, alright? No pressure.”
