A keen-eyed Japanese viewer noticed that in Episode 116 of the first season of the Chibi Maruko-chan TV anime, images resembling Twin Peaks briefly flashed on the television screen. Intriguingly, this episode is the famous “Nagazawa’s House Caught Fire,” and fire happens to be a recurring motif in Lynch’s work. The episode aired less than two months before Fire Walk with Me had its world premiere at Cannes.
