Do you have any advice for someone is only a quarter Asian? I get told by other people (Asian and non) that I'm claiming to be Asian for attention since even my Asian is mixed. I know I should ignore it but it gets frustrating being told I'm either "too white" or "Too Asian" and not even mixed kids like to be around me. I'm a nice person and I put on my pants just like everyone else. Am I wrong for not wanting to be white? I prefer embracing my Asian heritage. It makes me feel like I belong.

Don’t stop embracing your heritage! I think that you should be proud of the diversity in your blood. It’s difficult to get others on the same page with you when they’ve never been in and never will be in your position. That’s something that will always be frustrating. However, it’s so wrong to erase a person’s heritage just because they pass as another race. I think you should stand up for yourself proudly and if people are unwilling to accept it, it’s because they are intentionally ignorant and unwilling to learn. If you and another person share some degree of respect for each other, then don’t be afraid to educate them when the topic arises. Some people will choose to be ignorant, but don’t let that discourage you from dropping some knowledge and being proud of your heritage.

Friendly reminder for Asian-Americans

Cultural appropriation is not okay. That being said, if you want to stand up against appropriation of your culture, please stop using the N word. I’d go into more detail, but this issue has been weighing heavily on my mind and I need to get my thoughts out there, so bear with me...

I see too many of us Asians using AAVE. If we want to promote equality, diminish racism, and avoid perpetuating negative stereotypes, then we need to be respectful to people of other cultures too.

There is no justification for any non-black person of any color to casually use the N word. Just because we may be a marginalized group, that doesn’t mean we can appropriate another marginalized group. Furthermore, just because your black friend isn’t offended, that doesn’t mean it’s okay. They don’t speak for the whole group, just as you don’t represent the whole diverse Asian population.  

Obviously, no one is perfect and we can’t take back our past actions, but we can at least learn about the effects of those actions and make an effort to prevent exploiting other marginalized cultures.

Lunar New Year things…. When people don’t feel comfortable giving kids large amounts of money, so they give them 2 dollar bills because they’re “lucky” Like come on man. What am I gonna do with these? I feel bad spending them.

Keep those! They’re collectables! Stick them in a binder in plastic sheets; they make holders just for money, and even bills that have been touched can increase in value if you take care of them.

Fun fact: It used to be American tradition to give a $2 note to the parents when you had a grandchild. It’d be kind of a cute multicultural thing to pass on your Tet money that way. May the new year bring you long-term luck, like a $2 note!
