I think we really need to reaffirm now that no amount of homophobia can be acceptable in our culture. There is no such this as harmless or victimless homophobia. All homophobia contributes to violence against us. You can not “disagree” with lgbt people’s “lifestyles” without supporting the rhetoric and legislation that puts us in very real danger.
Homophobia isn’t that black and white though. You can hate the sin and still love the sinner.
OK, as a queer person who grew up in a genuinely loving, caring, utterly wonderful, and still deeply homophobic Church, let me try to fill in what you’re not understanding about this whole “Love the sinner” deal.
When we refer to people like you as “Homophobic” I want to be clear what we’re saying here. This is not a judgment of your intent. We are not describing you as a hateful person, as an aggressive or violent person. But we are saying that your actions and your attitudes participate in and reinforce a system of rhetoric that encourages violence against LGBT people, and, far, far more importantly, that forces millions of LGBT people to live in shame.
That’s really what this comes down to. Not hate. Not violence. Shame.
Consider the point purely theologically. Jesus tells us that to desire a sinful thing is as bad as to act on that desire. My lusting after another mans wife is as bad as actually sleeping with her. My genuine desire to hurt someone is as bad as actually hurting them.
So when you tell me that loving another man is a sin, you’re not just talking about physical acts of intimacy. You don’t get to draw the line there. You don’t get to pretend that I can be bisexual so long as I never actually physically act on it (which is already a terrible burden to place on someone). You’re saying that every time I look at a guy and imagine how soft his lips would be, or think about how beautiful his eyes are, I am sinning. I am a sinner every time a dude walks past me with a tight sweater on that shows of his arms. Every time he has nice hair or a nice smile.
My love, according to you, is a sin. That is the burden you are forcing people to live under. That burden forced me so deep into the closet that I didn’t even know I was there. It forced me to repress every genuine feeling of sexual attraction for other men, and to live for years with those feelings straining to get out, whilst I struggled with the constant guilt and shame that came from having those thoughts.
And I am one of the lucky ones, because I’m alive to have this conversation. Because for many, many LGBT people that guilt and shame manifests as self-harm, substance abuse, low esteem that leads them into abusive relationships, and very often suicide.
You tell yourself that you’re one of the good ones because you don’t hate us. You only hate what we “do”. But what we “do” is living. It’s being alive and whole and a part of this world, and if you genuinely believe that we can’t have that then you might as well put the gun to our heads and pull the trigger. Because you’re already doing that, you just don’t have the guts to admit it.

Unpopular Opinions
• There are only 2 genders - Male and Female
• Pansexuality is just a fancier name for Bisexuality. Even if you believe that there are more than two genders, there are only two sexes. Bisexuality is the attraction to both the sexes.
• You need dysphoria to be transgender. Being trans is not a choice. It’s a very difficult thing to deal with and by saying it’s a choice you are demeaning the struggles that actual trans people face.
• The Fat Acceptance / Health at Every Size movement is bullshit. It’s absolutely okay to be fat. It’s absolutely not okay to spread misinformation that being fat is healthy or that losing weight is impossible.
• The feminist movement is more of a leftist movement than a movement for women right now.
• Reverse racism isn’t a thing because it’s just called racism. If you dislike or are prejudiced against a person simply due to their skin tone, that’s being racist.
• MOGAI identities and neopronouns are not only silly, they are genuinely harmful to the LGBT community.
• Your race, gender and sexuality are only a minor part of you. They do not make you special. They are not your personality.
• Men face struggles too. Men are more likely to be victims of violent assault and almost never win child custody battles. There are hardly any male only centres for victims of sexual assault. Men do get sexually assaulted a significant amount more than people consider as the definition rape only includes penetration, skewing the statistics. Forced oral sex and the like is not counted, which is why male rape statistics seem so low at first glance.
• Women are not inherently goddesses. Men are not inherently evil.
• There is nothing wrong with being cis, white and male. Not being these things also doesn’t make you a better person.
• Words only have the power you assign to them. It’s silly to be afraid of them, irrespective of their usage in the past. All words have a history. By being afraid of them, you only give them more power and continue to dwell in the past.
• It’s absolutely okay to eat the food of and wear the clothes of other cultures as a means to immerse yourself and learn more. Segregation does no good, it never has.
• Your mental illness doesn’t cure you of your sins. It’s not a get out of jail free card if you were present, aware and in control of what you were doing.
• Your political leaning does not automatically make you a good/bad person. Your actions do.
Perfectly put.
Unpopular opinion: a white straigjt cis mal has nothing to do with most of those things and you should mind your own business
Hey, @girlreadingaboveherlevel I’m not white, straight or a male.
I’m actually an Indian bisexual woman. Who’s been out (or outed, rather) in India before being gay was legalized. So yeah. You can imagine.
Also, I don’t think you have to be a part of a community to discuss it. God knows a lot of the far left discuss white males and what they think about them. Speech is free and friendly debate encourages constructive thinking, irrespective of whom it’s with. This goes for both sides.

You came early into this world. You were such a wee thing. So frail, so fragile. I feared you wouldn’t make it. But your father, he never doubted. He always said you’d become the strongest of them all. And he was right — you have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon. Only you can bring our worlds together. That is who you are, son.

It’s childish, anyways.
The GOP tax bill—the amount of money that was given to corporations and the rich would have paid for Medicare for all and healthcare for every man, woman, and child in this country for the next five years. So it’s there. And additionally, we added several hundred billion dollars additionally to our military spending, when the military didn’t even ask for it. They didn’t even want that additional spending, but we lopped it on there—and that could have financed public college tuition for years as well. So we actually have the money for these things.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez | Interview with NowThis
We actually have the money for these things.
It’s not “ponies and unicorns”
It’s not “pie in the sky”
It’s not “unrealistic”
It’s not “too expensive”
It’s all about who has the courage to change the status quo and realign our priorities
We actually have the money for these things.
Okay. Just take a second and really think about this.
There is more than enough money to have healthcare for all. There is enough for kids to go to college and not be in debt for the next 40 years. There is plenty to help the disabled live comfortable, dignified lives. And there is still enough to eradicate homelessness by having programs for addicts, mental healthcare, job training, and clean, safe housing for while they are getting back on their feet.
The reason these things don’t exist is because our government:
-chooses to give tax breaks to the uber rich and huge corporations
-chooses to bailout banks and corporations when they make poor/unethical decisions
-chooses to spend an almost unfathomable amount of money on military spending, a lot of which goes to private companies via military contacts
Personally, I’m furious that our elected government officials are making their current budget choices. I’m sick and tired of “corporations are people” and they have a bigger voice than actual people. I’m livid that the GOP is still trying to make us believe that “trickle down” economics works.
