they wrote her asking “what’s the point?”, had the answer to that be love, and then punished her love, and expect us to interpret it as triumphant and not world-shattering grief…??

Can I just say, I don’t understand anything plot-wise of this finale? I don’t wanna talk too much in detail about the obvious shock value death (albeit an aesthetically pleasing scene) because the real problem is at its source. The taking down of the twelve is the most anticlimactic thing ever done on Killing Eve. I know most people watched the show solely for villaneve and not giving a single damn about the other plot points but the thing is that in season one through three the bigger plot lines actually worked, in season four it just ends up being unkept promises. And for me that is a huge reason why Villanelle’s death comes across as completely unnecessary and purely for shock value: imagine a finale in which the taking down of the twelve is much more earned in a action-spy kinda sequence where we’re constantly on the edge and not “oh someone got shot randomly in a low tension moment”. At the end of it all and only then you can put in every screenwriter wet dream (we would have never gotten a happy ending, I’ve made my peace with that a long time ago) and kill one of the main character with a believable plot twist that feels true to the characters and most of all it has to make sense.

I fail to understand anything about Carolyn this season. She’s always been an ambiguous character but this is beyond, I don’t get anything she does nor any of her motives and I think the worst reaction you could get as a writer from your audience is “I don’t understand why this/these characters did the things they did”.

Another thing I absolutely hated is that the twelve never end up having a face. It sounds weird but I promise you, one of the reasons if feels unsatisfactory is that we never see it through. You can’t just make the character say “we did it” and thinking you did something, you have to make me feel it, you have to make me feel like the storyline I’ve been watching for four season actually end up going somewhere with closure. They basically started a story with MANY details about it and then closed it in five seconds with zero details.

In short, for me the real problem isn’t the shock value death itself, it’s everything leading to it, all the shortcomings from the big plot.

The finale needed an epilogue at the very least.

Epilogue 1:

Several months have passed since the incident. Eve is sitting at a cafe or something in a another country. Photos scattered of Carolyn because she knows. Eve pulls out the heart voice box and “Admit it Eve, you wish I was here” plays. Then a few moments later someone behind her that we can’t see comes up and says “Admit it Eve”. Eve looks up at the camera and barely begins to smile when the episode ends.

Epilogue 2:

Several months have passed. Carolyn is running an operation and Irina is her assassin. Carolyn is sitting at a cafe and waiting. In another location nearby, someone that looks like eve (haven’t seen her face) is watching from a balcony. Room inside shows tons of photos of Carolyn and Irina and other people connected in her web. The prison photo of Villanelle is in a corner with a red string that starts from her photo and connects to Irina and then to Carolyn revealing the identity of the sniper. The woman leaves the location and heads to the cafe and sits down with Carolyn. Carolyn says hello and reveals that it’s Eve. The only thing she says is “Why?” And Carolyn knows what’s she asking and then explains why in Carolyn fashion. Carolyn then says she’s sorry it had to be this way but that she’s very busy and is waiting for someone and Eve should just leave if she’s not going to do anything. Then there’s an explosion in a building that Irina happened to be in. Huge explosion. Bigger than it should have been. Carolyn is shocked but Eve isn’t. “I don’t think they’re going to make it”. And in the chaos around them Eve shoots Carolyn under the table with a silencer pistol. She hunches over the table and dies and Eve walks away. Eve gets into a little car and let’s out a breathe. Someone is sitting in the passenger seat. It’s Villanelle. “Well that was subtle.” Eve looks over at her and rolls her eyes. “What happen with the C4?” Villanelle looks away a little embarrassed. “I got a little excited,ok?” “Excited?” Camera pans to behind them and three buildings are on fire. “It got the job done and you were very good. Very sexy.” Eve cracks a smile and puts the car in drive. “Thank you” then they drive away. Mass chaos is everywhere and the music that played in season 1 when Villanelle dressed up as Konstantin plays and the episode ends.
