Sword (Yataghan) and Scabbard

Swordsmith: Hasan Agha

Dated: 19th century 

Culture: Turkish

Medium: steel inlaid with gold (blade); silver filigree set with coral (hilt); silver filigree set with coral and niello (scabbard)

Measurements: scabbard: 2 3/8 x 24 5/16 x 1 11/16 in. (6 x 61.8 x 4.3 cm); yataghan: 2 3/4 x 27 1/2 x 3 1/8 in. (7 x 69.8 x 8 cm)

Geographies: Turkey 

Of the various types of Islamic arms, the sword (or saber) and dagger were the most prized by European and American collectors, including Henry Walters. These works were admired for their diverse shapes and materials and especially for their rich and intricate surface decoration.

Vinis stayed silent, chewing slowly on his fish. He knew he was being paranoid. Perhaps he had been vehement in his accusation, but the past few weeks for him had all but called for it. As he twirled the now bone skewer, he did feel a twinge of guilt as Mardig apologized.

“..There’s no need for you to apologize, as it is I should be sorry. I just.. I cannot help but be wary.” He stood up, tossing the fully picked skewer into the fire. “I will take my leave. I’ve imposed on you as is, though..” he trailed off, looking down for a moment before facing the other directly. “..I truly thank you for the food. You did not have to offer me anything and yet you did. You have my gratitude, as little as it may seem.”

"I can understand that feeling. But really, I… I ought to be better about how I come off." He admitted. His demeanor and voice tended to send mixed messages when it came to speaking. "Imposed? Nah, if anything you helped make sure I didn’t waste my catch." He remarked, eyebrows raised a little. "You’re welcome then. …heh, I may look mean, but even I wouldn’t turn away a half-starved traveler." he added, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. That was rare. For him to jest a little like this. 

"I won’t pry as to where you’re headed, that business is your own… but when you set off again, I’d go due west from here if I were you." He suggested. "Just continue that way, you’ll be likely to hit somewhere with much better shelter than this fire."

“Half-starved-“ Vinis started, frowning slightly, but stopped as he saw the other’s face. He gave a small smirk of his own before turning toward the direction Mardig pointed in. He didn’t see anything for a while besides more trees, but he knew it was a better shot than nothing. He mentally sighed, however, knowing more walking was ahead of him. Despite the short rest and food, Vinis knew he was reaching his limit.

“Then there I shall go,” he spoke softly, before turning back to the other Absol. “Thank you. I owe you one.” He turned and took only a few steps before stopping once more. 

"..Should some Sneasal ask for me, would you keep it secret?"

 Alternate Route B - "Fireside Kisses"

… With his patience quickly running out, he grabbed Mardig's hand in a last attempt to get his attention. As the other turned to face him, however, he froze. The way the firelight reflected back in his eyes, the warm hue that coloured his hair, his lips..

"W-what's with you?" Mardig spoke, surprised at Vinis' actions. He looked down to their still joined hands and tried to shake free, but Vinis only brought them up to his lips, ghosting over Mardig's hand.

"Wh-"

"Can I kiss you?"

"NO."

"..Please?"

Mardig held his tongue at the plea; he barely knew this man and he was asking to kiss him!? Though, he seemed to be a nice enough fellow, and it wasn't New Years eve? Wasn't it a custom to kiss someone during this time? Yes, this is what the man wanted, a simple tradition that he wanted to follow through. He could put up with this for a few seconds.
