“If I cared.”
“Why’d you mention it in the first place, then?”
“I could ask the same of you.”
“That’s right. You could do that. You have the power.”
“I’d love the help, I tried just regrowing trees as more went down, but I think it would be better just to change people’s minds.” She tsked and shook her head, starting to walk to the large log house next to them. “Couldn’t last another twenty minutes? You need to work on your tolerance. I have the DVD somewhere.”
“My tolerance is exactly as good as it needs to be. Any better and drinking would stop being as much fun as it is. Anyway, changing people’s minds is all very well and good, but sabotage is really more my area. Might not work as a permanent fix, though...” He frowned. “We could make ‘em think everything’s haunted or something. In a sort of very dangerous way. The sort of ghosts that kill you the second you look at ‘em. Well, no. More like after a few warnings.”
“ No, “ she replied, lifeless irises flipping up to the sky. I obviously don’t have a problem with murder at all.” These reaffirmations were getting on her delicate nerves, giving a palpable reason to actually murder him. His explanation against that was jarringly ridiculous, so much that she found herself laughing. “How can you kill me if I kill you first!”
He considered this for a moment. “How can one kill that which has no life? Ghouls are lifeless, aren’t they? If only technically.” He realized he wasn’t sure.
Of course. I believe you. Or in you, or whatever. Go on, I’m listening.
I don’t think that’s wise, but I won’t stop you. Right, so, it might be in these woods, or... Possibly Australia. In a cave, maybe. An underwater one.
❝ Following you… What else does it look like ? Must you make me state the obvious? ❞
“Yes, because you’re saying things I already know. It makes me feel very intelligent and accomplished.”
❝ By out here, do you mean in this country or … in the woods ?? ❞
“Take your pick. I’ll accept an answer to either. Or both, if you’re feeling up to it.”
She scoffed. “Something witchy? I think you actually have less of an understanding than I do and I only just found out I was a witch.” She shrugged. “But…it’s worth a shot.” Lana tried her best to relax, closing her eyes and taking deep breaths. The earth in the clearing shook slightly and a mass of vines sprouted through.
The vines were met with thunderous applause. “Very good! Although... I wonder, is that what you intended? And are you sure it was you who made it happen? Magic is a funny thing, isn’t it? Guess reality kinda is too...”
.
I’ll try to be relatively helpful.
Good, good. I suppose you'll want to know what it is I need help with? I doubt it. I'm telling you anyway. It's a staff. It may or may not exist, but I don't think that's much of a reason to lose hope. There are so many things that may or may not exist. Some of them must exist.
“Oh…Well, yeah..I’m a witch. And, yeah, usually I can kinda sense stuff, but for some reason, this whole time I’ve been out here, I can’t feel anything. It’s like whenever I try and concentrate, it’s just…static.” Lana sighed. The whole reason she had come out was to practice her spells and she couldn’t even do that.
“Nice. Very nice.” He waved a hand at the small clearing in front of them. “You should do something witchy. Otherwise I technically am not allowed to believe you.” He didn’t really have a clue about witchcraft, or how to do it. That being said, he was very good at bullshit. “I hear you’re not really really supposed to concentrate,” he said. “Just let it happen.” A shrug. “Never heard anything of the sort, actually. But it could be worth a try."
Dignifying that with a response! Obviously.
Ah. Fair enough. In fact, I think a thank you is in order. Now, since I've been relatively nice to you, you have to help me. It's in the rules. The totally unofficial ones. The ones I made up just now. Doesn't make 'em any less valid, in my humble opinion, so if you'd be so kind...
She had actually been mild relieved when he seemed to have given up. Leaning against the nearest tree, she started to say something when he said witch. Her heart almost stopped. “How did you…What are you? Like psychic or something?”
“No. Those weren’t estimates or anything. Just guesses.” He studied her face for a spell. “I thought you lot were all psychic. I don’t know shit about witches, though, so, well, there you go.”
“Are you kidding? I finally have a mission,” she laughed, even though it was a sad thing to think of. “I’ve been pretty busy saving forests, but I know what you mean, I’ve been in that situation before. Having a big party tends to fix things though.” She paused and her eyes widened. “Wait, you’ve never seen the end of Fight Club? We need to watch it, right now. The end is the best part!”
“Mission, huh?” He appeared pensive for a moment. “You gotta let me help. I’m dying here. But yeah, let’s watch it. Just the end, mind you. Like, the last twenty minutes. That’s the part I was too drunk to remember.”
