The problem about this whole “mahou business” is that Saki had no idea what he was supposed to do. Of course, there was the goal of eliminating the enemy, but what was the enemy exactly? Saki wasn’t one to act without thinking, and all the more in a situation like this, where he could just walk in and die without knowing the slightest hint of anything.
If Saki were to die, it wouldn’t be like that. There’s only one way to die, and that way would be for him.
For the umpteenth time, the blond scanned the gardens, where the witch was rumoured to be in. He’d been coming here lately since the plants started dying out in here, but there’s nothing to find other than the ominous feeling he’d get whenever he came here. Was there something he wasn’t doing?
【♦】——Homura had been investigating as well, but there wasn't all that much to determine aside from what she had already known. This witch's modus operandi was predictable and perfectly manageable, and wouldn't bring her any new information, so she had considered killing it just to be done with it... but inside her remained a shallow hope that, perhaps, that girl might be drawn out.
Until then, Homura had been keeping guard of the place, perched in a nearby tree, watching passersby go about their lives with not even a glance at the dying garden. It was all so very dull, but it meant no one was in harm. With time, a blond boy had wandered too far in for comfort; though the first few minutes were still and quiet, in the blink of an eye, a sheep appeared.
Without hesitation, Homura leaped from the tree branch and brandished the desert eagle, lodging a bullet right between the animal's temples. It had shrieked, then vanished, as if it were nothing more than a hallucination, a dream. In one swift turn, she squared the older boy in her gaze, disapproving frown in place.
"If you're not prepared to fight, leave."
