Max Payne 3 Review: The Pinnacle of the Series, Set Under a Different Sun.
Max Payne 3 is a third-person shooter game in which you play as a private security guard for a rich family from Brazil, protecting them from people who want to take their lives or their money. Max Payne was a former homicide detective for the New York Police Department (NYPD) in the previous games. His wife and newborn daughter were killed by some assassins who were under the influence of a drug. Max tried and succeeded in getting revenge on the one who sent those assassins. After those events and some others, a few years later, the story of Max Payne 3 begins. Max decides to work again, but this time as a private security guard in another country: Brazil.
The game is really fun. The gameplay is smooth and satisfying. Every gunfight feels intense and exciting, while Slow Motion and Last Man Standing make every shot fired feel satisfying and every battle more intense and fun. The game has certain scenes that make the gameplay feel really cinematic, like jumping from a high place in slow motion and other similar scenes. What I didnāt like was that enemies were too easy to kill. Even if there were more enemies than in previous games, it still felt too easy to get past them, even though I played it on the hardest difficulty in the game, which was Old School. I donāt know if you will feel this problem too, but I guess most people wonāt.
This game focuses more on having a realistic gameplay. There arenāt that many weapons, and you canāt carry as much as you could in the previous games. Though there is still a sufficient amount of weapons you can use throughout the game, meaning that it didnāt really affect me, and some weapons were only present in certain chapters. The game allows you to carry 2 handguns, one for each hand, and a larger weapon used with both hands. If you decide to dual-wield those handguns, Max will drop the larger weapon on the ground.
The game has some new features, unlike in the previous games: the possibility of disarming your opponent and shooting him with his own weapon, while he can also do it, so be careful when you approach them! Other things you can do in this game that you couldnāt in the previous ones, are the ability to take cover, and the Last Standing ability, which activates when you have 0 health, and it offers you a chance to survive if you kill the enemy who shot you while youāre falling down to your death in slow motion. You need to have a painkiller on you in order for Last Standing to activate, otherwise you die instantly. Last Standing doesnāt work on Old School Difficulty. These new mechanics made the game easier than the previous ones.
I finished the game in around 10-12 hours on Old School Difficulty, which you unlock after beating the game on Hard. Iāve beaten the game around 7 times until now on almost every single difficulty, except Easy.
The game is really fun. The gameplay is smooth and satisfying. Every gunfight feels intense and exciting, while Slow Motion and Last Man Standing make every shot fired feel satisfying and every battle more intense and fun.
Unlike previous games, Max Payne 3 still has the same dark tone as the other games. This time instead of the action taking place in New York City, it takes place in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A sunny city, full of vivid colors. The story is engaging from the very beginning, and becomes even more interesting as the story progresses. I would say that it has the best introduction in the series, and the characters were introduced better.
As you progress through the story, you can discover hidden clues in every chapter, which adds more depth to the gameās dark story, learning more about the characters and whatās happening in every chapter. You can also find weapon parts of golden weapons. Once you collect all the parts of a golden weapon, the weapon will deal 10% more damage and will be the color of gold.
The transition from gameplay to cutscenes is seamless, which makes the game feel more immersive, compared with previous games, where you transitioned from gameplay to graphic novel panels. The characters were well written, which succeeded in making you hate or sympathize with those characters, the way the writers intended. This makes you want to learn more about them. The location is not a dark theme of the game anymore, unlike previous games, but this doesnāt mean that itās completely gone. The dark themes of the series still exist, the sad state of Max, and the emotions he feels are very well showcased through the cinematic cutscenes, unlike the graphic panels from the previous games.
The story is engaging from the very beginning, and becomes even more interesting as the story progresses. I would say that it has the best introduction in the series, and the characters were better introduced.
The graphics are really modern, using the same game engine used for Grand Theft Auto V, meaning that the graphics and mechanics of this game are still relatively modern, compared to the previous games. The designs of the favelas and other areas you encounter look really realistic. Same thing with character design and details, like gun wounds and explosions. The environment is full of life: streets, parties, clubs, and every other place is also inhabited by civilians, who picked the wrong time to be near a conflict. You can destroy objects like glass, locks, certain walls/ceilings and other things. Unfortunately, you canāt interact with things like doors, sinks, toilets, and showers like you could in previous games.
The performance was good. I played the game on Windows 11, and didnāt encounter any performance issues that affected my game experience. I had a small problem though, the first time I opened the game, there was lag in the menu because the game opened in windowed mode, but it solved itself after entering fullscreen mode.
The soundtrack was a great fit for the location and tone of the story. Music and sound effects made battles and areas more immersive and intense. The voice acting was also really great, every voice fit the characters they were playing as. Max Payne is still like in every other game from the series, the highlight when it comes to voice acting, the late James McCaffrey masterfully played Maxās role, accurately expressing the emotions the character felt throughout the story. In this game, certain Brazilian characters speak only in Portuguese or sometimes speak it, which didnāt bother me. One thing that did bother me, though was that the dialogue spoken in Portuguese wasnāt subtitled in English, and only in Portuguese. I think this decision was deliberate because Max Payne didnāt understand Portuguese either.
The graphics are really modern, using the same game engine used for Grand Theft Auto V, meaning that the graphics and mechanics of this game are modern, compared to the previous games.
I recommend the game to everyone who likes or wants to try third-person shooters, full of realistic cutscenes, smooth gameplay, and a great story. I would also recommend it to those who liked the previous games, if they donāt mind that the story doesnāt take place in the dark New York City anymore, the story is still dark and engaging. I would not recommend it to those who donāt like what I mentioned previously, and to those who wanted it to take place in a darker city, like New York.
I recommend the game to everyone who likes or wants to try third-person shooters, full of realistic cutscenes, smooth gameplay, and a great story.
Great Soundtrack & Sound Effects
Modern Controls and Mechanics
Enemies are easier to kill
Portuguese Dialogue Wasnāt Subtitled in English
Max Payne 3 is a masterpiece that successfully modernizes the series, while still keeping the essence that made the series popular. Even though the atmosphere is different than in the previous games, changing it from the dark New York City to a sunny Brazil, the story remains engaging and full of memorable moments. The smooth gameplay, realistic graphics, and the well executed cutscenes, make this game a memorable experience for fans of the series and for those that are looking for a masterfully done
third-person shooter.
