For many witches, having a garden seems to be a bit of a no-brainer. After all, plants and magic go hand-in-hand. Plus, when thinking of a witch, itâs hard not to think of a cottage in the woods with a little vegetable garden out front. Unfortunately for the majority of us, our cottage in the woods is a tiny flat, and our garden out front is a windowsill with limited space.
This is when it comes time to embrace your craftiness and bring your garden indoors! Not only does it place your garden in a convenient location, it also allows you to freshen the air, recycle what would otherwise harm the earth, and embrace your witchy green thumb!
Eggshells for the Garden Witch
The kitchen witch has eggshells piling up on the counter, dried and ready to be ground up for use in protection powders. The garden witch looks at these shells and thinks, âOh! Fertilizer!â
But if youâre limited in space and have to keep your garden limited to your windowsill, you may find yourself looking at those eggshells and saying âOh! New pottery!â Not only is creating an eggshell planter a very green practice, but itâs also creative and makes transplanting much easier if you end up having a larger garden later on!
The ContainerâŚ
Simple enough, you just need mostly intact eggshells. In the picture above, the eggshells are kept in the carton, but Iâve seen eggshells set up decoratively, such as with this picture:
The core of this post is clearly the eggshells, but you can arrange them in whatever way saves space or is aesthetically pleasing!
Carefully fill the emptied eggshell with potting soil. Make an indent in the soil with your finger, and carefully add your seedling before adding a final layer of soil and watering. If you plan on keeping the plants in the eggshells instead of transplanting, you could also carefully poke holes in the bottom of the eggshells so that your plants donât get over-watered.
How Can I Witch This?
Eggshells alone are extremely protective, and providing your plants with that energy is beneficial. Around Ostara, use died eggshells! Not only will the shells have protective energy, but youâll be able to use color correspondences and whatever symbols you used for the rite.
Draw symbols or runes of growth, protection, and strength on the shells in order to encourage your plantâs growth!
Bonus points is if you grow protective herbs in the eggshells!
May your harvests always be fruitful! Blessed Be! )O(
âď¸Sun waterâď¸
đUsed for:
Protection, healing (especially physical), happiness, truth, clairvoyance, courage, strength, prosperity, luck, self-love, cleansing, confidence, leadership, justice, gardening, growth, warmth, comfort, fertility, and creativity
đHow to make it:
Leave the water on a sunny windowsill or outside, preferably in direct sunlight. Sunrise, 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm are perfect times for this, or you can leave it from sunrise to sunset. You can also add herbs and flowers to it as well (lemon peels, orange peels, marigolds, chamomile, cinnamon, sunflower, etc.) Or charge it with some stones (like sunstone, orange calcite, citrine, tigers eye, goldstone or carnelian), but please donât put these stones in the water. You can also make a sun tea with sun water for a very potent solar spell.
Safety 101 in Witchcraft
(Lesson originally taught at @alexandriarchives on June 17th, 2019)
For the sake of this lesson, I shall be using the term âworkingâ to denote whatever witchy activity is being attempted! It can be secular, theistic, simple, complex, etc!

â Privacy đŤ
In my opinion, the first and foremost safety tip is having the proper level of privacy for a working. This means the level of privacy you need to feel safe and secure, the timing and and space you need to lay out your tools and ingredients. It encompasses whether you are âin the woodsâ (or broom closet) or if youâre known to your loved ones (that you live with at least). Even if your housemates are aware, there is still a certain level of privacy that encourages safety.
I also start with this one because it goes hand-in-hand with the next three. You need a safe amount of privacy to have a good surface for your tools and ingredients, and for your own mental health (including the self care of grounding before and after). Think about whether youâd like to take a bath or shower beforehand to help the grounding/cleansing process. Itâs a personal preference, but itâs something to keep in mind with the timing aspect of your privacy.
âââ
đ´ Surfaces/Tools đŻ
Think about what kind of working you are trying to complete. Does it involve water? Fire? Make sure to use an appropriate surface for that, as well as have things arranged in such a way that they arenât damaged. Donât put your Tarot cards right next to your large bowl of water or your candle flame!
Sometimes accidents happen. Have a fire plan ready if you are using any in case a small candle flame catches on something flammable and becomes larger. Additionally, have a similar plan for sharp implements that you use. For example, have a first aid kit nearby if youâre using a sharp objects just in case something happens during your working. Especially good for if youâre working with blood magic.
Though this is the mundane section of the lesson, things in witchcraft often overlap so also keep in mind the spiritual safety of your surfaces and tools. This is a more personal distinction so I donât have specifics to lay out for every one of you. For example, things like spirit vessels or Tarot cards with certain personalities that may not want to be nearby during certain workings. Also keep your notes and grimoire safe from splatters or flame as much as you can! (A touch can give it character though đ)
âââ
đ Ingredients đż
Please do not use any ingredients that you donât have confidence of their interactions. This goes doubly for anything consumed or put on your skin, but itâs still important with anything you burn or with touch tools that you will later touch. Donât forget this applies to crystals as well as plants and spices! Think about alternative ways to use an ingredient that you arenât sure of being safe to consume or burn- submerge it, bury it? But also keep in mind what is safe to bury outside if you plan on that. Thereâs no shame in using your trashcan as a symbolic burying for a working that isnât safe for nature.
Certain incenses and essential oils are bad for your pet friends AND/OR your children. Do some rudimentary research on what is safe for the other inhabitants of your home and do NOT apply an essential oil to your skin without a carrier oil. Take a moment to spot test it on a small patch of skin near some soap and water too before using it ritually/magically.
A Note on Crystals:
Certain crystals are toxic. Thereâs typically good lists of whatâs toxic and what isnât but the general rule of thumb is that malachite, cinnabar/cinnabarite, and galena. While malachite is fine tumbled, itâs really not good for you raw (it is made up of 57% copper). And donât put crystals in your body cavities (like your vagina, anus, mouth, etc). Certain crystals also interact funkily with certain elements, like sunlight, water, salt, etc. Just do your research before using them in your work.
âââ
đĄ Physical and Mental Health đĽ
Beyond the space, tool, and ingredient safety concerns, your own self is absolutely a vital component to a workings. Therefore, so is your physical and mental health. Try to consider what state you are in as diplomatically as you can- pushing yourself can have longterm trouble in later workings and itâs important to be gentle with yourself.
But it doesnât automatically mean you have to cancel your working. Often you can re-tailor it to account for your current state. Do a simpler one, one in a different location so you can sit or lay down more easily, alter the ingredients and steps so you can do it in the bath. Witchcraft is what you make of it!

â° Grounding/Cleansing đż
Grounding is a series of steps you do to center and care for yourself prior to and after a working. I couple it with cleansing because there are many types of grounding that include a cleansing aspect/step. There are many methods of grounding and there will be a whole other class on that so I wonât go into too much detail. Just remember that it does need to be done afterwards as well to reconnect yourself with the world at large after the intensity of a working- even a simple one can wobble you, so to speak!
Also keep in mind that there are many methods of grounding; donât feel like you need to do the same as others have said worked for them. Showers/baths, a snack, touching the ground, listening to music, playing a video game, petting an animal- these are all valid! The only general rule I encourage for everyone is to drink some water or other simple refreshment afterwards (no alcohol).
âââ
đĄWarding/Shielding âď¸
Warding is an energy working that creates a protective layer around a location. Shielding is the same but is mobile, ideally for a person (like the practitioner themselves!).
It is extremely important to have the basics down of this before doing workings just to be safe. Itâs likely they wonât be needed in any direct way until you do more intense workings, but they will maintain your space and build on themselves so that you are blind-sighted.
Shielding yourself is most easily done with an anchor- a piece of jewelry or pocket sized item that you have the shield tied to. That way you donât have to actively focus on it all day when you can just wear/have the anchor. The first time you tie it to the anchor you will need to carefully craft it bit-by-bit. It is commonly done by visualizing (like building a wall, net, bubble, etc.) or can be alternatively done with another sense. You could do it in a tactile fashion by sculpting it, drawing it, creating it in a video game and setting the anchor on the craft to tie it. You could use music or scents as well. The primary goal is the careful, deliberate building of the energy and then directing it to its purpose. Take your time, donât rush. Repair and recharge your shield anchor at least once a month, or more often if you notice its effect diminishing. Recharge either with your own energy or you can use other sources like the sun, moon, crystals, the earth, sigils, etc!
Wards are very similar, they just encompass a location and are stationary. Often this is the practitionerâs home. You can have physical anchors (many people like crystals, witches bottles, or potted plants) or you can tie the ward to the home/property itself. Donât forget to repair and recharge these as well!
You also want to recharge your wards and shields at least once a month, more if you feel that itâs necessary.
Wards have different purposes: defensive/energy purposes and offensive/entitiy purposes. They have the double effect of containing your energy and your workings from leaking out and protecting any other unintentional energy leaking into you. Think like a backyard pool where you donât want the water going all over your yard- you want it to stay in the pool. Offensive is more deliberate protection for if a specific entity or energy that is trying to get in. Itâs the fence that keeps the neighbour from using the pool when you donât want them to. Itâs more actionable protection.
âââ
đť Spirit Safety đť
If you intend to do any spirit work with communication, inviting, seeking, etc., itâs important to add onto the warding and shielding the ability to banish. If your desired location for this working is in your own home, a comprehensive House Rules prepared for any spirits you allow into your wards is also recommended.
House rules are a (generally written) list of agreements for the protection of yourself and all your housemates (human or pets). Think of them almost like understood guest rules when you have someone come over. Yes, you donât necessarily present them to your guest upon their entrance but that is because we live in a common society with an understanding of what is polite. The spirits you are dealing with do not. It is not considered rude in the spirit community to ask them to agree to a set of house rules.
For spirits that pre-existed in your home: establish that this is your home and you want to respect them but there are still rules that they need to follow. Show them your house rules. If they donât agree to them, banish them.

CIRCLE CASTING 101
A magickal circle is an energetic construct that you build or envision around yourself before working magick, doing a ritual, some like to cast a circle before meditating or reading tarots. For a solitary practitioner the circle is typically 5-6 ft in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of the group. It can be defined physically, energetically, or both.
Circles provide protection and serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure.
Please remember that this is just what i personally like to do when casting a circle, but that there are many methods.
Preparation for circle casting
1. Determine how much space you will need.
2. Cleanse your area. Vacuum, sweep, throw away any trash in the area.
3.Make sure you have everything you need for your ritual! Theres nothing more frustrating than having your circle casted and realizing youâve forgotten an herb or any supplies you need for the work youâre about to do.
4. Purify your area. Light purifying incense, sage, sprinkle salt and holy đ§. Most importantly, Visualize the negative energy dispersing. If you donât focus & visualize, your physical actions will have little effect. Visualization is hands down one of the most important things in any and all magickal workings!
5. Now its time to cast your circle!
Visualize protective energy coming from within you and direct it towards your casting arm. Focus it through a casting tool (Athame, wand, or â) Â and visualize a beam of energy coming from it and settling on the ground. Trace your circle with this energy, 3 times in a clockwise direction. Once for protection, once for focus, and once for power.
Call the 4 quarters
Face North and say âI call to the North, to the element of Earth. Grant me (us if not practicing alone) your endurance, your strength.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Sprinkle salt onto your altar or crumble soil into a bowl on your altar.
Face East and say âI call to the East, to the element of Air. Grant me your creativity and your intuition.â                                       Light incense, wave a fan,or drop feathers onto your altar.
Face south and say âI call to the South, to the element of Fire. Grant me your passion and your energy.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Light candles.
Face west and say âI call to the West, to the element of Water. Grant me your empathy and your emotion.â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Pour blessed/storm/moon/natural water into a bowl or into your chalice.
Now would be the time to call on any deities youâd wish to work with. You can call any Goddess or Angel by personalizing this to them. I typically do not personally work with deities, but if you were to want to, Call to them similar to how the Elements are called. Ex. âI call to Gaia, Mother Goddess, Spirit of Earth.â and then place an offering symbolizing them, so for Gaia you might place  grain on your altar as an offering.
If not solitary, now would be the time to invite others to the circle. The group leader typically invites others in by a series of phrases, although i know every coven has their own method fine tuned for themselves, This is just the method iâve seen used and am familiar with. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Group leader:âChildren of the Goddess, I now invite you to enter our circle.â Each member will be asked âHow do you enter this circle?â The response should be âIn perfect love and perfect trust.â
Now its time to raise energy. This is the most important part of this process. It is so important because when you open your circle at the end of spellwork, You release all of your energy you have filled with intent out into the universe to go manifest whatever it may be you have called to. You want as much energy as possible to be released carrying your intent!
Here are a few ways! There is no wrong way to do this part, and there are SO MANY ways. You can fine tune this all to you. Remember that this is your ritual, and you want your energy fully behind everything you are doing. This is all customizable, most of all the energy raising.
-Witches Rune Chant
âDarksome night and shining Moon,
East, then South, then West, then North,
Hearken to the witchesâ rune;
Here i come to call thee forth.
Earth and Water, Air and Fire.
Wand and pentacle and sword,
Work ye unto my desire,
Hearken ye into my word.
Cords and censer, scourge and knife,
Power of the witches blade waken all ye unto life,
Come ye as the charm is made.
Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell, Lend your power unto my spell,
and work my will by magic rite.
By all the power of Land and Sea, By all the might of Moon and Sun,
As I do will, So mote it be;
Chant the spell, and be it done.
Eko, Eko Azarak

-Meditating to raise energy. Visualize energy building and building by visualizing warm, yellow light fill your body until its expanding out of your body and filling the dome above your circle. visualize it filling with energy until you are content.
-Music or Drumming, Dancing and Chanting.
Once you reach your desired energy level, it is time to get into whatever spellwork or ritual you desire to preform!
After your spellwork, its time for Cakes and Ale. I like to make little spirit cakes and have some red wine after a ritual. Expelling all of that energy from your body is draining, and you should take your time to enjoy this part of the ritual. Set a cake and some wine aside for the entities who have lent you their energy as thanks. Cakes can be anything, from saltine crackers to cupcakes. Ale can be water. Anything that works for you is ok. For my cakes, i bake a shortbread and mix whatever ingredients i want into the dough. This way, I can craft them with the intent for whatever ritual i may be doing.
ONCE YOU FINISH YOUR WORK SAY GOODBYE TO THE ELEMENTS AND THANK THEM FOR THE POWER THEY BROUGHT. ALWAYS SAY GOODBYE AND THANK ANY DEITIES CALLED ON.Â
HERE IS HOW I DO IT:
-Farewell to Goddess. ex. âI thank you, Gaia, for gracing me with your glory. Farewell and Merry met.â
-Farewell to Quarters (Counterclockwise).Â
âMy thanks to the element of Water, Your compassion was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.â Now cover your dish of water or pour it out, Physically say goodbye as well.
âMy thanks to the element of Fire, Your fierceness was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.â Douse your candle.Â
âMy thanks to the element of Air, Your wisdom was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.â Douse incense/flip fan/turn over feather.
âMy thanks to the element of Earth, Your protection was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.â Cover earth with a cloth, or return it to ground.
I like to walk the circle the opposite way of its casting three times, and voila!
Keep in mind that this is just my method! There are many methods and this is just one of them.
I hope this is helpful to you!Â
-Love and light, @lapiscat
