A character can move a story, but what can move a character?
The answer to this question will vary from writer to writer, understandably so. However, I've got a few ideas that any storyteller can apply to give their characters compelling motivations!
1) An ambitious character is sure to be driven. Whether it's for a childhood dream, a quest to save their homeland, or a longing to come out on top, passion can be a surefire way to put an arc in motion.
2) Love was bound to show up on this list, wasn't it? A character's love doesn't have to be romantic; it can be directed at a friend, a family member, or even a place. Whatever the type, love can pull a character in a number of different directions.
3) Anger is a particularly interesting motive because of its volatility. A character led by anger is impulsive, and therefore unpredictable. Like love, this anger can be directed at any person/thing, with any reason.
Questions for your OCs
What are their priorities in life?
How do these priorities guide them through the story?
Are they led primarily by emotions or logic?
Do their motives change as they develop?
People are complex, and there are a number of other values that could drive someone. However, I hope that my words sparked an idea or two. Happy writing!
