sarah used to fiddle with her rings as a nervous habit, but when they get taken away, it doesn't stop. she ends up rubbing the skin around the base of her fingers raw.

he's softly playing with her hair, fingertips rubbing against her scalp.

sarah’s eyes flutter shut, deep sigh escaping her. she takes in the sound of deacon’s heartbeat, his scent, the overwhelming sense of security of his arms around her and legs tangled with hers. her hands, open-palmed against his sides, clutch at the fabric of his t-shirt and she squeezes her shoulders inward, as if by doing so she could somehow get closer to him.

how long has it been since she’s been held like this ? felt safe like this ? it’s only been a week since he’d brought her to lost lake. most of those days sarah spent in with addy in the infirmary, doing what she can to help the overwhelmed woman, and deacon had been equally busy doing everything from gathering herbs to taking out swarms of nearby infected. it’s the first time in years they’ve been able to just . . . exist.

sarah looks down at her left hand. he’d even gone to get their rings back. after all the time she’d spent without them, they felt a bit foreign, but still right where they belonged.
