“The thing,” then, would be the possession of tapetum lucidum, which is a layer of eye tissue that allows many mammals and fish to see in low-light conditions. Qunari eyes do, in fact, produce eye shine– blue, usually!– but I’ve also met a few whose eyes didn’t. I assume that’s a matter for the Tamassrans; genetic lineage and all that. Surely those bred for conflict are more likely to have it than those not.
Humans don’t because they’ve only ever been diurnal, I’m assuming. Maybe they did at some point. Who knows. I write poetry, not gene codes.
fascinating and good to know
virulent-walking-bombshell can we get a human perspective on this? have humans ever had eyes that do the thing? surely tavuntar humans must know something about this.
Tevinter. It’s Tevinter.
No, human eyes do not “do the thing.”
We get red eye in flash photos, though.
Would you look at the time? I should really get back to unpacking. This room isn’t going to make itself.
This hurts.

((Malen)) Why do you like shoes so much? Is it a shem thing?
I don’t just like shoes, I like good shoes.
It isn’t a human thing, it’s a fashion thing.
(Have you seen elven models? Some of the best models I’ve ever seen.)
That’s because elves are better than humans :D
eta i still think the shoe thing is weird btw
You can think it’s as weird as you want, but at least I look fantastic.

Cafe - Zev + Dorian
“Well, here’s to your continuing education,” Zevran said with his own laugh, holding up his coffee cup in a toast. He couldn’t fathom why anyone would want to return for more of this hell, but the man was interested in math of all things and was presumably quite rich.
He put on an amused grin at Dorian’s exclamation. “Yes, hard to hide the accent. Most people recognize it right away, though some assume I am Dalish and therefore cannot be from Antiva. I couldn’t even tell you whether or not there are any clans there.” He tilted his head as a thought struck him. “Actually, my mother was Dalish, but probably not Antivan. Hm.”
He grimaced when talk turned to shopping. “The stores here are terrible,” he complained in agreement. “Barely even any open markets, and most of those just sell fish. I can’t eat fish this far south because they get the spices wrong. Means you can actually taste the fish.” He wrinkled his nose. “I’ve wondered what it would be like to visit Minrathous malls someday, but unfortunately I have neither the coin nor the ears to make such a visit enjoyable.” He was here mostly on scholarships, after all, and Tevinter was notorious for its anti-elf attitude. Not that he wasn’t used to such things, but he would rather stay where he was less likely to get mugged by mages.
A buzzing sound came from his pocket, and he provided a sheepish “sorry” as he checked the text. Scowling at his phone, he typed a quick reply and shoved it back into his pocket, now on silent. No, he was not going to go hang out with his friend’s fraternity; he’d already been hungover this morning and didn’t need a repeat of that tomorrow.
“I wouldn’t know, I’ve never actually seen a Dalish,” he admitted thoughtfully into his coffee. They weren’t all that common most palces, and Tevinter wouldn’t even let them past the borders with their lack of “official” papers and documentation. It was sad, really, but Dorian hadn’t ever put much thought behind it. In fact, he’d never put much thought behind elves in Tevinter at all until moving to Kirkwall. Comments like Zevran’s still took him by surprise.
“They wouldn’t lynch you on sight, you know,” he started. His defensiveness always kicked in when he heard someone talking poorly about his homecountry. Even then, he could recognize when such talk was true. He’d be the first to admit Tevinter was riddled with problems. It was just that he had the mentality that it could be fixed, where most people had the mentality that it has always been and will always be a pit of political corruption until the very end. Time to change the subject.
“There was one place I found, just the other day.” He rubbed his chin, trying to remember the name of it. “Down closer to the harbor, if you can stomach the smell. It was a large boutique full of nothing but imported designer brands. If that interests you, I could show you?”

“An angry whim?” Zevran snorted. “At least you didn’t end up in the middle of Orlais. That would have been an awful decision. Most people tend to pick the college before heading to the city, though.
“How have you liked it so far? I’ve been here a year now.” He sighed, but his expression didn’t turn turn sad. “I rather miss the markets and coast of Antiva. Kirkwall could never hope to compete with them, but it’s a nice second home, and thankfully not boring.”
“Well, originally, I wasn’t planning on going back to school at all!” He laughed, able to look back on his first college struggle with humor now. It stopped there, Dorian unwilling to go into detail of just why he was back in school.
“I knew it!” he exclaimed, brightening up again. He sat forward, suddenly more interested in the conversation again. Not that he wasn’t before, but world travel was something he liked talking about. Who had been where, where he’d been, experiences. Those kinds of experiences were always so rich, and so was the shopping. “It was your accent, it gave you away. And I agree, the shopping here is particularly abysmal compared to other cities. Though, I’ll admit I was spoiled by the outlet malls in Minrathous. Biggest city in Thedas naturally produces the biggest malls, too.”
Moving in this weekend. Nervous? Me? Never.
