Opened the other day the exhibition Half an artist is on display at SÍM, Hafnarstræti. The exhibition is by artist Eva Ísleifsdóttir and you will find paintings that are somewhat familiar.
The surface of the canvas is not whole, the frames appear to be broken and you can only see half a person; half artist. The works are so well known from the art history that they turn into symbols, symbols for what these artists represent.
Opened on August 28th was the exhibition LIFE - EFI by dancer/coreographer Margrét Bjarnadóttir.
The exhibition is a part of the Reykjavík Dance Festival and Bjarnadóttir exhibits a series of works reflecting on the transformative quality of doubt. You'll find video installations, works on paper and photographs which highlight Bjarnadóttir continuing fascination with the double nature of reality. She explores how words are hidden within words, how landscapes contain other landscapes, and how she only dances when necessary.
About the exhibition they say: “Sniffer was born in June, which means that he is a typical Gemini. His parents abandoned him at an early age, so he spent his youth wandering the streets, aimlessly searching for food and love. All his life, Sniffer has suffered from a severe split personality (which is common amongst the Gemini), and has brought much pain and suffering to his quest for belonging...
Who is Sniffer? Where did he come from? And what has he done to this house?”.
At the exhibition you will find gray scale drawings by both artists but that´s about the only thing they have in common. Sigga Björgs eerie drawings are well know in Iceland and she´s showcasing new drawings on paper, on the wall and sometimes on the floor.
Erica Eyres exhibits realistic drawings of models with hairdos, that´s the simplest way to put it. You will also fins sculptures and installation by the artist and videos made by the pair.
Not only is the town beautiful but it´s full of creative energy which makes it an ideal place for artist to stay in and a lot of Icelandic artist do.
Some live there and others visit the town on a regular bases. Skaftfell is the center of arts in the east coast of Iceland and located in Seyðisfjörður.
The Skaftfell summer exhibition 2014 is entitled RÓ RÓ and presents a group of local and international visual artists who are in an active contact with Seyðisfjörður. Some of the artists live permanently in the town, others own houses or reside regularly in the fjord. On exhibition are new or recent works, which are made locally or refer to the place, in the Skaftfell gallery as well as various sites and venues throughout the town.

At the exhibition you will find works of the artists represented by the gallery but with an addition of few other artists.

Exhibiting now at Kunstschlager artist run space is the british artist Paul Kindersley.
Visual Reykjavík met up with the artist and got a little insight into his works.
Looking at the exhibition it´s obvious you have been producing the artworks in Iceland, you can see the gallery space, the street outside and even the landscape.
They asked me to come here and put up an exhibition so I made all the work, new specially for the gallery so i have this storyline and all these characters. I´ve been here five days and I like to have the initial idea and instantly try and make it. It´s like instant sketching or drawing and I use the video in the same way sometimes I don't even know what i´m doing but i know the color. I started with three primary colors.
There's a lot of performance in your work, do you work a lot with performance
I don't really know what to call lots of my works, even if it´s a live performance i sometimes prefer it to be a sculpture and call it a sculpture. I like for people to be able to look at a performance for just a minute or maybe for hours, you don't need to watch it from start to finish, which is the same with any artwork really. Sometime there's a pressure on the audience, they have to stay the whole thing.
I think it comes from this internet thing, you can skip through things, fast forward.
I´m interested in films and the cinema, to make a film you need like thousand people, all this complicated things. I can't possibly do it and I do everything myself, it sort of like one person webcamera aiming to a big budget Hollywood movie.
When I start I have like this complicated story that would have been really hard to visual but as I start the characters it gets simpler. There is like this sort of epic story that becomes these individual characters that are shouting out for attentions.
All the youtube videos you make, either on purpose or accident are in your personal environment, you film in your bedroom or whatever so when I came here I immediately thought so this is my new house, so it needs to fit in the storyline, this is the temple now. You find the same things in the video to be in the installation.
You have your work online and you have a lot of you videos on youtube.
I like the lack of hirachi, also the same with my reference points for my work, i don't think there's a certain area where you can't use that in an artwork, well you can. and because so much of the references are coming from films but also form youtube videos and it´s nice to return it to the same area where it came from. People come there on purpose to watch certain things but i like the idea that you might be looking at something on youtube and the suggestion would be a video of mine and you click on it and you're like why the hell was that made or why am I here.

Eddudóttir put up a home exhibition of 19 new works she´s taking this to the extreme. The opening was last Saturday but don´t fret, you still can catch the exhibition at Unnarstígur 2a, Reykjavík today Tuesday and tomorrow Wednesday, 15-16th July from 5-8 pm.

The Hjalteyri Scales to open at Verksmiðjan Hjalteyri
Rod Summers opens the exhibition Hjalteyri Scales Saturday July 5th at 3pm.
Verksmiðjan Hjalteyri is located in the north country in the Akureyri area.
Summer has said this about the Hjalteyri Scales: “Casting the mesh into uncharted waters can result in an unexpected catch. When Loki broadcast his sperm into Angrboða we may be religiously sure he didn’t expect to net a ravenous wolf, a writhing serpent and sheer hell. These days scientists, bolstered by the support of paper reputations, willingly inform that mobility instigated global warming has caused fish shoal disappearance but I maintain (in this work at least) that the real cause of fishy absenteeism is the result of container ship noise pollution, the European common agriculture policy and speculative chocolate. The Hjalteyri Scales is a 4 channel audio work which seeks to bring a cubist balance into the remotest corners of places of abandoned employment."

Bjarki Bragason at the newest space in town, Harbinger
The newest exhibition space in Reykjavík opened recently. It´s called Harbinger and is located in a space that used to house a fish shop, Freyjugata 1.
Their first exhibition is by the artist Bjarki Bragason called "perhaps that in which he".
The exhibition is a result of Bragasons research the last few months, the works are part of the scenario that is not visible without inspection of the path remaining.
The exhibition Three Amigos opens at Gallery Outvert in Ísafjörður Friday 27th of June at 7pm.
The space will serve as a studio for the artists for one week leading up to the opening. Therefore the exhibition itself will be determined by the time shared by the three artists in the studio. The exhibition and the time leading up to it will revolve around a worktable in the middle of the space. All the cards will be laid down on that table, meaning the artists´ ideas and things – which will become the content of the show opening on Friday June 27th.

So on something that has nothing to do with the Reykjavík art scene or what, well maybe in a way.

It is time for London to catch a glimpse of contemporary Nordic sculptural practice! The Royal British Society of Sculptors is delighted to announce that applications are now open for SKULPTUR. This opportunity will comprise work selected by open call and by invitation of both emerging and established artists who are citizens of, living or working in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden and have not had a substantial exhibition in London before. At least one artist from each country will be selected. It is a unique opportunity for Nordic artists to exhibit at the RBS galleries in South Kensington, London and outdoor works at a prominent outdoor site in central London from mid February – mid May 2015. Around thirty artists from Iceland, Germany and France presented playful works on two floors and two electronic Icelandic musicians performed in a side room. The Opening and Concerts on Saturday were then followed by Artist Talk on Sunday. Where the director Árni Már Erlingsson along side with some of the artists took the viewers to a tour around the space, before everything was taken down on the second and last day of the small energetic festival.
We´re guessing we haven´t seen the last of Festisvall. Stay tuned!
Ólöf Helga Helgadóttir, The flying pencil at Týs Gallery
The exhibition " The flying pencil" is currently on display at TÝS gallery, the artist Ólöf Helga Helgadóttir is showing.
I thought of the flying pencil while working on this exhibition. That is sort of the feeling I got while making the drawings. I did the drawings over and over again, I even had to redraw the big piece because when I was drawing the mouths while using stencil I kept erasing with my hand, so I had to repeat the whole thing and that time I was more careful. There is a lot of movement in these drawings.
The big piece was to begin with a paper plane I made while studying in London. At first I made two paper planes, one was a failure while the other was a success. This one is the failed one. I was going to throw it away but when I sawed the failed one apart I thought it got rather interesting so I took it back with me to Iceland. Now it´s in three pieces, top and bottom pieces are missing. Since then I have been working on it from time to time but when this exhibition came up it all came together. I always pictured it hanging right there in the space to divide it up. Then there´s these drawings of half open mouths that are a bit like comics, a bit surprised. While drawing I wanted them to be floating in a random way, but the mouths are never drawn upside down, they are not spinning in circles. There´s a certain atmosphere repeating itself in the drawings.
I use paper a lot in my work. I like how you start off with something two dimensional and then you build up on it, this is the foundation of the work.
That´s how I started working when I was working on the two smaller pieces. I would draw same size circles using compass on a paper from a roll, after cutting the circles I would glue them together, building up layers of paper for the foundation. While the glue was drying I kept the work flat by keeping it under something heavy. When the foundation was ready I started making each circle a little bit smaller than the previous one, and so on. But in the process of the work the material took over and started to fold up as the circles became smaller. I thought that was exciting but I quite like it when something like this happens and the process of the work adds to the final piece. The two pieces were made side by side, they are hanged up right in front of each other.
