Religiously, I consider myself a follower of forn seder (or in other words, a Norse polytheist). I primarily worship Freja, alongside Oden and The Vala. Venerating my ancestors, huldrefolket, and landvättar are central to my religious practice as well.

My magical practice started as a result of my family's second sight practice, and I found myself to sejd as a result. I also practice Swedish folk magic, blending both trolldom and the svartkonstböcker. Because I blend Old Norse magic and religion so heavily with Swedish folklore and customs, I do try to default to Swedish spellings. Don't be surprised at unfamiliar spellings, and feel free to ask for clarification!

Being outside is religious to me! I love caving, rock/ice climbing, kayaking, and camping. I could talk endlessly about how participating in outdoor sports have influenced my views on animism and väsen in folklore.

I hope that my blog and content will focus on magic, Old Norse religion, Scandinavian folk practices, etc. Due to the secret nature of some of my practices, I struggle with sharing my past, current, and future workings, but I am aiming to be more open about my personal practice.

to other folk witches: how do you engage in protection magic?

I've never been a heavily warded kind of person. if something is coming my way, I often dream about it, and get told the protective measures to take. if I feel off, I'll divine about it, and react accordingly.

I usually have some type of jewelry that’s blessed to protect and some wards buried around my home. If I feel like something real weird is going on I will draw a return to sender sigil on my wrist and just let it send it back on whom ever is throwing it my way. I’m a big fan of making a protective bubble and just going about my life.

Elderflower Amulet Bag

My newest stitching is a love letter and devotion to the elderflower. I haven’t finished anything in awhile (which is not abnormal for me as I stitch my pieces around my devotional calendar during the time the spirit is most seasonally active, sometimes setting it down as the season ends and finishing the following year during the same season), but I really want to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes from finishing something. So I’m taking time from my roosters to stitch a quick amulet bag to contain my letniční (zelené svátky)květy bezu/Pentecostal (green holidays) elderflowers.

I am using a Moravian embroidery pattern that made me think both of the umbels of an elderflower and the eight-pointed star (mother’s star) in slavic folk embroidery as a nod to the “elder mother” who resides in the tree in some traditions (though in others it is the devil!). These intricate versions of the eight pointed star are also a common motif in my devotional embroidery as a symbol of the wheel of the year.

In Slavic folk embroidery flower patterns are not meant to be realistic. I will go more into my color choices and thoughts about this pattern as I stitch over the next few days. Everything has meaning. Some of it may not be what was intended by the person who did the original design, but as usual I start with something concrete from the culture of my ancestors and as a reconstructionist daughter of diaspora rely on my allies and upg to make something personal.

settlers are always so enthusiastic about ''foraging'' and then you'll start talking to them about indigenous horticulture & sustainable harvesting practices and they quickly reveal that they're more interested in the aesthetic of being a Crunchy Woodland Creature than like reducing their reliance on exploitative industrial agriculture or rebuilding their local foodshed

This is not true and it is in fact neither very simple nor very plain to forage sustainably. This kind of flippant "it's such an easy hobby" attitude when it comes to harvesting is exactly *why* there are so many problems with once-abundant traditional foods being depleted. Every plant is different, has different needs, and can support a different intensity of gathering. Foraging isn't just some fun hobby, and shouldn't be treated like one. It is a method of intentionally working land to gather resources meant to sustain oneself, whether those resources be food, medicine, or something else. It requires conscious maintenance of the land you are working, and active monitoring of not just your own gathering, but the gathering of your entire community. It requires experiential, often generational knowledge. You cannot boil a resource-gathering operation down to a simple truism and expect others to be able to do it respectfully and sustainably.
