Airlines Exemplify where Society is Heading

As a person that loves to travel it hurts me write this article (not really) about the airline industry. Every week it seems we are hearing about how one big corporation bought another corporation in the same field. This has lead to a handful or companies owning the entire market and leading to higher prices, lower wages, and worse customer service. 

The best example of this can be seen with the airline industry. I'm sure a lot of readers will remember a time when flights were a lot cheaper, the seats were bigger, you received a full meal and movie with flights that were over a few hours long. Now that half the airlines have either gone bankrupt or were bought by a competitor those days are gone. These companies know they own the entire airline industry and we the customers are stuck. Not too long ago I had a one hour layover in San Francisco (SFO) but upon landing there I received a text message stating my connecting flight had been cancelled. After waiting in line for the customer service desk at the airport for over an hour, I was notified that they wouldn't be able to fly me to my destination city until the next morning. Mind you it was 10am when I landed in SFO. I asked if there were hotel accommodations being made for myself and the other long line of passengers in the same situation. I was told no and there also weren't any vouchers of any kind being handed out. I'm not going to blame the person that I spoke to at customer service because I know it wasn't his fault. It's the fault of the airline. Since I had no other options then I was stuck and that was my problem. Luckily I have a great network of friends in San Francisco so I had no problem finding a place to stay but I can't say everyone else on that flight had the same luck. If I had ended up in Houston I would have been screwed seeing as how I've never been or knew anyone that lived there. 

Time and time again either I end up with a delayed flight (for several hours) or cancelled flight. Nothing is offered because the airlines don't value my time or money as a customer. I'm out of options and they know it. The executives in charge of these policies never have to hear about it because they only care about the bottom dollar. The poor employees that don't get paid the wages they deserve are stuck hearing the complaints from the customers and have nothing to offer them in return. Pitiful. 

My advice: shop and think local. Avoid going to the big chains because at this rate that's all that will be left. I do love to travel but if a new airline pops up or if there's another way of getting there then I'll opt for that. The airline industry and all big corporations need to stop making videos and commercials talking about how much they love their customers and actually start considering their customers.

Governor, Democratic Party - PA

The primaries are next week so it's time to start researching the candidates and who to vote for!

First up, Robert M. McCord.(pictured on the left) He is the current treasurer of Pennsylvania. Based on what I read on his website he seems to be wish-washy with the main issues.  Additionally, he went on NPR and criticized Tom Wolf for donating $10 million dollars to his campaign and talked about how a person with that much money cannot relate to the everyday person. It's a little hypocritical given that McCord donated $1.7 million to his own campaign. The average person doesn't have that much money for a campaign.  Based on his wishy-washiness and and hypocrisy I don't believe he will be a strong leader for the state. My Vote: No.

Next up, Tom Wolf (pictured on the right) He is the chairman of his own company that specializes in kitchen cabinets. Per the latest polls he is the front-runner in the race. According to his website he's smart enough to believe in climate change but is pro fracking.  He sees fracking as a gold-mine essentially that should be exploited for tax revenues for the state.  I'm for increasing our capital but not at the expense of the people living in the state and the world in general. His site promotes his desire to get rid of corrupt campaign financing and the use of gifts by lobbyists which I think is great. Wolf has no stance on limiting gun control. Wolf is anti de-decriminalization under an ounce of marijuana. Wants to lower corporate net tax. My Vote: No because of lowering tax rate for corporations.

Next up, Allyson Y. Schwartz (pictured middle right) She is a PA congresswoman. According to her website she views the Marcellus Shale as an opportunity and will seek to impose a 6% tax on drillers. Her site does mention she will continue the ban on Delaware River Basin which is good but really the moratorium should extend to Marcellus Shale. I did like that she was the only candidate to make LGBT rights a main issue on her website.  She believes in gay marriage and banning conversion therapy. I also like her stance on college affordability where she mentions getting rid of Corbett's cuts. Anti death penalty. She's anti-decriminalizing marijuana. My vote: Maybe

Finally, Katie McGinty (pictured middle left) She's the vice president of an environmental construction firm. She wants to raise the minimum wage to $10.10. She's also for campaign/lobbying reform and reinstating the popular vote for president. She's pro gay marriage. While she has an environmental background she is still for drilling Marcellus Shale. Her site mentions imposing a tax but doesn't give the exact percentage which worries me. She is for pulling funding of for-profit charter schools.  She is not for limiting gun ownership. She's pro de-criminalizing marijuana. My vote: Maybe

Well I'm a little disappointed by all the democratic candidates. While I don't agree with all her stances I believe I'm going to have to vote for Allyson Schwartz.  This doesn't mean I'll vote for her when it comes time for the actual election but it's enough to get her through this round.
