i saw a lot of tiktoks on my page reccomending this book, so i decided to give it a try! here is my thoughts on this book..

for me, the supposedly happy scenes was kinda like a cliche wattpad story, though i might be a bit biased because i find these romantic actions cringy. i dont feel a sense of connection with the main character, julie, for the most of the story. while i do try to understand that she's grieving and that everyone act differently when they are in grief, julie just comes off as unlikeable for me. i genuinely do not understand how sam was madly in love with her when her personality was just bland..? she comes off as a typical insecure, shy type of girl who's kinda socially awkward and cannot stand up to herself. she's also quite selfish, literally not understanding that she's not the only one grieving for sam's death, treating her friends horribly which was justified with the excuse of "i am in terrible grief" though everyone is in as much grief as she is. i just see her actions as kind of disrespecting her friends, and she's just lacking empathy for them. i dont really see her grieving for her boyfriend's death as much, only the first few chapters where she didn't want to attend his funeral and was throwing away all his stuffs. the main character was very irritating for me all throughout the story, and that i feel the "special" relationship between julie and sam was just kind of toxic where julie is too dependent on sam and not as loving as they made it out to be. the author also missed a chance to clearly explain the supernatural elements where julie could call her dead boyfriend, which i believe was such a pity.

overall, it was an enjoyable book, however, i don't think it was worth the hype tiktok gave it. the writing was nice, the characters are relatable, they acted their age, nothing out of character. you can relate to their emotions, their grief of loosing a love one and their stress of going through their last years of high school. i did shed a few tears the last chapter, though it wasnt like a dramatic "heartbreaking, heart wrenching, sobbing, tragic" plot like how tiktok made it to be, which i was kinda very disappointed at. however, i do think that it depends on each reader, as some people can feel a sense of attachment, longing or been through a similar experience where they can relate to the grief julie have been through. i do think this was somewhat an entertaining book to read and kill time, though thao's writing can definitely improve for the better.
