Mission We facilitates the empowerment of young people to enable their participation in solving the many challenges to sustainable development in their communities. We exist as a vehicle of empowerment, working with a model that encourages voice, promotes participation, and results in young change-makers believing that they can be the change they wish to see in their world. The steps to accomplishing our mission include: Creating a space where young people discover and learn to appreciate their unique " voices" Providing innovative, child-friendly and integrated programs that enables them to engage in the process of personal and community change Lobbying adults to give young people the opportunity to show the impact their capacity can have on their communities Exploring, creating and solidifying opportunities for knowledge exchange and cross-cultural collaborations to encourage an appreciation and respect for the global impact of individual actions Company Overview VOICES (Voices Of Inspired Children Engaging Society) is a bold global strategy that is embodied in a child rights-based, children and youth-focused, empowerment-enabling, non-profit organization. At our core, we believe in the Bold idea that young people are capable of making a positive impact on their world TODAY. This belief is integral to all we do. It is a starting point for all our partnerships and projects. It is the sum total of all we have and seek to achieve. Ultimately, we envision a world of inspired, empowered and engaged children and youth, working side-by-side with adults to create inclusive, healthy, and prosperous communities.
Lake Volta is an enormous man made lake in Ghana which sustains a large fishing industry. Unfortunately, child labor is being utilized at the local level and children are being sold into service on the lake by families and caretakers in poor financial situations. This film examines this practice and encourages action to keep families together and stop the exploitation of children for labor to support the fishing industry in Ghana on Lake Volta.
Child participation is a fundamental human right and is a guiding principle of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). UNICEF in close collaboration with the Department of Children and a NGO, Curious Minds organized a consultation event which brought together over 100 children from one region in the month of September 2008.
The events involved focus group discussions and plenary sessions. Each focus group was conducted with children from various social and economic backgrounds where they discussed issues related to one of the following sectors: 1) Education, 2) Health & Nutrition, 3) Child Protection, 4) Advocacy, and 5) Water and Sanitation.
This process provided an important and interesting insight to take childrens views and perspectives into consideration for UNICEFs programme in the country.
