mossman (moss/mothman) is the one true pairing
741. The local cemetery is a friendly, well-manicured place. Joggers run its paths on the weekend. You walk past it every day on your way home. As such, it’s a shock to turn the corner and find a thing with far too many bones for one body scaling the antique fence. It stares at you for a long moment, then slowly raises a bony finger to where its lips should be.
many eyes
sharp rows of teeth
monstrous growl
massive form
perched in a nearby tree
i didn’t say a name, but you thought of someone, didn’t you?
Urban cryptids?
Using dumpsters as lairs and no one touches them because they give off a “bad feeling”
Lurking around corners and in back alleys
Scrambling away up the fire escapes with prey of raccoons or roadkill
Moving from dark spot to dark spot and hiding behind lamp posts when someone drives by at midnight
Contorting to use the underside of cars/trucks as transportation
Sewer grates being used like peep holes to watch the passers-by
i say moss has achieved mothman status but is that even really true? first of all, mothman is super well-known within the cryptid community(????) but bigfoot and the yeti are super popular in pop culture (ESP outside the us ... which is where i am). so i was like . okay, moss is Sorta Well Known but not yeti - level. it’s never been in a phineas and ferb episode or anything. the simpsons has not animated it for laughs thus far
but like, are people on tumblr.com fascinated enough with this voidthing to be drawing fanart of it? i don’t think so (yet). but i do definitely think there is some (unintentional) shitposting on reddit that i would like to see. so, like, goatman tier
@mimicic | starter call
It has been watching for too long. Nestled comfortably within its too-big jumper, cold hands at its sides, its back too straight for the boy it pretends to be. Maybe, if the people in the street stopped looking at it (small, penniless parentless child, throwing rocks at birds like it might actually hit one), it would not have to look back so much.
There’s an owlish blink.

“You’re a pretty, uh——— interesting fellow, aren’t you?”
Well. It is certainly an interesting something. ‘ Am I. ’
i gotta run real soon but ... i’ve got some new followers so like this for a starter that’ll come either very very soon or much much later
@voidburial liked this for a starter.
A bouquet with various flowers were in Rosemary’s arms as she walked through the city. The perk of having a florist as a close friend is that she got leftovers. After being bumped into a daisy fell out of the arrangement. Before she could pick it up someone did the work for her. An affable smile was given its direction as she shook her head. ❝You outta keep it, I think it suits you.❞
Despite its destructive nature, and the intrusive thoughts (repeated, over and over, scratching at the insides of its skull) that tell it to pluck the flower from its stem and tear the petals from the daisy’s eye, it simply holds the flower with very little intention to hand it back. It’s probably a good thing we won’t have to find out what would’ve happened had she expected to get it back. Finders keepers. Still, it looks a little puzzled at such generosity. It wouldn’t have given away a flower so readily, not even if it had plenty.
‘ Thank you. ’

25. What do they need and want out of relationships, and how do they go about getting it?
basically, nothing. it’s very used to being a lonely creature. it doesn’t make much of a difference to it, because it doesn’t know any better. still, if it were to have A Friend, which is a distinct possibility, i feel like it would act much more like a pet than a human acquaintance. it doesn’t do well keeping up conversation, and you aren’t really allowed to touch it, so it will probably just follow you around and listen to what you have to say. it generally shows affection by gift-giving, even if the gift is, like, animal bones.
18. What kind of person could they become in the future? What are some developmental paths that they could take, (best, worst, most likely?) what would cause them to come to pass, and what consequences might they have? What paths would you especially like to see, and why?
okay. OKAY. basically moss is a very empty figure. it has no origin and no past, and it doesn’t know who or what it is (and learning about its roots would be an Interesting Thing). it is very much a Creature. its head is constantly full of static, and it is not a thing that rationalises its own feelings or the world around it. it doesn’t really see human beings as living, breathing, thinking things, just because it hasn’t thought about it that way - and thus, has no compassion for them. i really want moss to find a fondness (or, at least a gentle curiosity) for humanity, or even just particular people. in a similar vein, developing a sense of morality somehow would be Good, but you’ve got to develop values (and probably a fear of pain and death, so that, you know, you feel sorta bad when you hurt and kill people) first. i think it’d be interesting to see whether it feels particularly guilty over all the things it’s done, or whether it excuses itself for not having known better. or, a bit of both.
it’s also really funny that moss isn’t a cryptid that lives in a cave in the middle of nowhere. it’s just out there, in the world, on the streets, for anyone to discover. like, could you imagine a cryptid on letterman. moss playing giant beer pong with jimmy fallon. moss plush toys. basically public reaction wherein the media find moss before the government does is a thing i would like to explore at some point. more cryptids start coming out of hiding, cryptid awareness, a cryptid protection act, debates on talk shows as to whether cryptids should Live Amongst Us or go back to where they came from, cryptid activism, conspiracy theorists crawling out of the woodwork, other conspiracy theories being taken more seriously. god.
honestly i think moss’s most likely path is just learning about humanity and this world, and adapting to it as best it can.
13. How do they greet the world — what is their typical attitude towards life? How does it differ in different circumstances, or towards different subjects? Why do they take these attitudes, and why do they change? How do these tend to be expressed?
basically, it kinda just rolls with the punches. it doesn’t really feel happy or sad or angry about living, or the things that it does. it has pretty severe dissociative symptoms, and tends to be relatively out of it the majority of the time, so while it feels certain ways about things, it doesn’t really perceive itself as having feelings, and thus, its attitude toward its environment tends to be very apathetic.
however! it’s growing! amnesia is sucky, because it means it came into a world already expected to know how to exist within it. it’s a very curious being, and it picks up and retains information about as well as we do (just, with a slightly shittier memory and poor concentration) — like, if someone taught it to read, or gave it access to the internet, it would be very capable of learning about human tradition and history, and would be able to slide into society more seamlessly.
also. it really likes gardening. because a) you get to dig into the ground and find stuff (rocks, super old rubbish that tastes real bad, sometimes bones) and b) flowers. so, that’s greeted with joy. it’s like, the only thing it really cares about.

11. How are they vocally expressive? What kind of voice, accent, tones, inflections, volume, phrases and slang, and manner of speaking do they use?
it really depends — it generally only speaks because that is the most efficient method of communication with other speaking-people, not because speaking its replies is what it’s programmed to do. it has a weak accent from nowhere in particular (think, like, a very watered down tommy wiseau - it’s often mistaken for danish) when it talks, and tends to speak without much inflection, which can make it sound Pretty Dead. metaphors and sarcasm usually go over its head, so it doesn’t use those very often unless it’s borrowed from somewhere else, or a cliche figure of speech repeated ironically.
12. How are they bodily expressive? How do they use nonverbal cues such as their posture, stance, eyes, eyebrows, mouths, and hands?
okayokayokay it looks So Dead basically all the time. if you aren’t a person it’s talking to, like, if you just happen to pass by it at some point, it will be staring at you with its dead eyes and its head will turn to follow you until a) it gets bored of looking or b) you leave. i compare it to a feral cat a lot — it tends to move in very slow, fragmented motions, but frantic and unpredictable nonetheless. it usually doesn’t move two body parts at the same time (if it’s walking, it’ll stand still to turn its head), not because it Can’t, just because that’s the way it is. it’s fidgety, but doesn’t fidget. when occupied, it tends to slouch, when in company, it has a straight back.
She’s not doing this. Elise reaches out. ‘ Give it to me. ’ A beat. ‘ Please. ’
It weighs its options, narrowing its eyes. Though it’s not eager to part with whatever it is she wants from it, it hands it over anyway.

Holding a steaming paper bag that was folded and closed at the top, Sasha meanders towards Martha Garrow. Her pores were powdered smooth and her eyes were dim like door mats. “Nowt so queer.” This was conspiratorial, in response to The Customer. Mourners refused to look at it or simply didn’t want to, so they continued to stare uncertainly at their catalogs.
“Been here long?”
“Feels it.” She takes the bag of sweet rolls and trades him the mortuary keys.
He nods, padding over to the ‘man’ that was now systematically sniffing each of the flowers in the display. Grief was complex. He stood and waited for an entry point, hands at his sides.
Maybe, if it weren’t such a strange thing, people wouldn’t look at it for so long. It grows uneasy under the gaze --- flesh crawling, squirming, bugs writhing under - skin. Shoulders roll, bones cracking quietly, crunching as it straightens its spine. It turns, sharp, dark eyes piercing into the stranger, like an alley-cat caught in the stream of a flashlight.
Its body swivels, head tilting.
The creature looks tired. Hollow - eyed and pale, like it hasn’t eaten or slept in much too long. Still, as a person, it looks passable enough, like a business man running on a few hours sleep. Jetlagged, maybe, after a long trip full of meetings and negotiations.
Its fatigue makes it irritable. There’s an ugly yearning to grow sharp claws only to dig them into its own scalp , to scrape greymatter from the inside of its skull and wipe it off on its coat.
Moss waits quietly for the other to tell it to leave.
