“You’re a strange man, Link,” Niles said with a sigh. He had a feeling that talking to him about sex or relationships were both going to lead to a stubborn dead end, as they usually did.

“Sure. Hey- have you considered that perhaps you aren’t straight? That would probably explain why you don’t want to date a girl, or sleep with her.”

“I’ve never really thought I was. But I don’t want to date or sleep with anyone right now.” Queer identity had never been strange or foreign to him with two mothers. He actually found the idea of being strictly one thing - heterosexual or otherwise - strange. How could anyone exist in one, rigid box without exception?

“I just make the choice that seems best. And dating someone, man, woman, or otherwise, doesn’t seem like the best thing.”

“You…don’t want to have sex with anyone?” Niles raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t really a big deal, but still. It was strange to him, especially given his own proclivity for excessive hookups.

“Look- I can tell when you’re being cagey. You don’t think it’s going to work out. If you just took this a little more seriously, though, you might actually decide that you like this girl.”

“I dunno, I guess I just don’t really care about it?” He’d given his thoughts on sex a minimal amount of time. On the off chance he got into a relationship he’d be willing if the other person wanted it but he had no real desire himself.

“Well if something happens with her it happens, I’m just not actively seeking anything like that out right now.” He said it as though he wasn’t actively avoiding it.

“I’m more concerned that you never think about it,” Niles pointed out. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you say you’d want to sleep with someone. Ever.”

He tucked his phone away, slumping back against the sofa and folding his arms. “At least make an effort on this one date. Go on. It’ll be fun…”

He gave a thoughtful hum. “I don’t think I want to.” Not that the idea abhorred him but.. It hardly seemed something he felt the need to cross off of his bucket list.

“I’ll be pleasant company. We agreed to meet up because of our similar interests but I doubt it’ll go any further than that.” He phrased it so that it seemed he was open to the slim possibility they hit it off.

“Romani… Unusual name. And I didn’t know you were into redheads.” Niles grinned, pulling his phone out of his pocket. A few moments of searching social media later, he lifted up his phone to show Link a photo.

“This is her, right? She’s not bad-looking, you should take this date a little more seriously. I bet it would do you good to have a relationship, or at least someone to sleep with every now and then.”

“Geez, is that all you think about?” His tone was more embarrassed than judgmental. “I’m not into anything and I don’t have time for that. I need to look into getting a job once I graduate.” The government money would be stopping real soon and he’d already decided he wasn’t going to Julliard.

“Of course, when you meet a girl, it would be because you’re both music nerds.” Niles rolled his eye, patting a spot next to him on the sofa for Link to sit down. He looked way more stressed than the idea of a simple date should make him.

“In high school or not, you’re pretty cute and obviously this girl thought so too. You should at least make an effort to try and get a second date. Does this girl have a name? What does she look like?”

“I don’t have time for that sort of thing.” He didn’t even had time for this date but he’d somehow got swept in the heat of an unfamiliar social situation. If she wanted to be friends sure, he’d do his best at that. But you could only be so much of a good friend with all the lies and secrets he kept.

“I, uh. Her name was Romani I think. Red hair and blue eyes.”

“I was practicing piano at the college and a student came by. She must’ve thought I was a student and said we should practice together and I said I’d really enjoy getting tips from an actual student. At some point I must’ve given her my number because she sent me a message to set up lunch beforehand.” Link didn’t sound particularly worried, though his brow furrowed a bit. He wasn’t in any sort of position to have a relationship and he didn’t want to lead her on in any way.

“Lunch should be harmless enough, I doubt she’ll stay interested when she realizes I’m still in high school.” He said it half to himself.

“I’d say I’m fairly limited in what I do. I don’t hurt anyone unless specifically requested to by my liege. And I know he’s a good man, even if you don’t want to think I am.” Niles shifted in the chair, his posture loosening just slightly.

“Look- I like you. You know how much I like you. But…just let me have this. I haven’t flown off the rails yet, and I don’t intend to in the foreseeable future. Thank you for your concern, but now, just…leave it alone.”

“I didn’t say that.” Alarm was evident in Link’s voice. That was what he’d been afraid of. By no means did he think Niles a bad person.

His eyebrows knitted together for a moment. But if that was Niles request he would oblige. There was little point in pursuing as resolution wasn’t something that could be forced. If he saw something really concerning he’d try again.

Quickly the concern was replaced with a smile, as though it had never been there at all. “Sure thing. I trust you.”
