(Voted the most popular character on the jpn server in a combination of seven different character-ranking surveys held throughout 2021)
Floyd is highly unpredictable, with everything he does and does not do being dictated by his mood, which varies wildly without any apparent rhyme or reason.
While he can make borderline inappropriate comments from time to time, Floyd is also quick to heap praises upon those who impress him, to the point of changing from insult to compliment while mid-sentence.
Floyd often threatens to “squeeze” people. While it is uncertain what kind of violence he is insinuating, in the Tsumusted event a tsum version of Floyd would wrap its entire body around a person’s arm to express displeasure, and in his ceremonial robe vignette the word “squeeze” was once (accidentally?) translated as “throttle”.
Floyd enjoys dance and exercise immensely, joining the basketball club on a whim, but he just as whimsically will refuse to participate in club activities at all, much to Ace and Jamil’s annoyance. When asked “why the basketball club?” he answers that it was just how he was feeling at the time, and “If you asked me to choose today I’d join the pop music club”.
Ace explains, “Just when you think he’s playing and having a blast, next thing you know, he’s totally over it and turns into dead weight on the court”.
Whereas his twin, Jade, collects mushrooms and his housewarden, Azul, collects coins, Floyd says he is uninterested in collecting things. He has no interest in money, but does enjoy designer shoes and seems to be familiar with various fashion brands.
His “Wish Upon a Star” event wish is for a pair of “Tenebres” brand shoes, a famous brand in the twst-universe (Jade is able to procure a pair for Vil in order to earn his trust in a card vignette).
Floyd says that while he didn’t like clothes when he first came on land (he dislikes being “restrained” and says clothes “ felt like always being wrapped up in seaweed”) he now enjoys wearing all kinds of different colors, as well as shoes and accessories.
He says he once purchased a cute, eel-motif T-shirt for Jade, but Azul has forbidden him from wearing it. Floyd also bought an eel-motif keychain that he wore to Vargas camp, saying that it was “a stand-in for Jade, who wanted to come, too.”
While Crewel once, mistakenly, refers to him as “younger Leech”, Floyd corrects him to say that neither he nor Jade are any older or any younger than the other.
In middle school, Floyd and Jade played drums and bass in a band with Azul on piano. Floyd explains, “When we got a groove going, Jade would match my tempo, then Azul would join in, complaining all the while…good times.”
Floyd has a unique, sea-creature-based nicknaming convention for everyone in the school based upon his impression of them, referring to the player character as “little shrimp-chan” for how they appeared jumpy and frightened at their first meeting, Grim as “seal-chan” for his round shape, Ace and Deuce as “crab-chan” and “mackeral-chan”, respectively, for the color of their hair, etc.
The only characters he refers to by name are Jade and Azul. (there is one home-screen line on jpn-server where Floyd refers to Trein by name, but this may have been a continuity error, as it was corrected to “red squid” on ENG-server).
(Floyd refers to Vil as "Schoenheit" and "my fancy friend" during ENG-server's Beansfest, but this is unique to ENG-server. In Floyd's original dialogue, he never refers to Vil as anything but "Betta-chan-senpai". It is unconfirmed whether this means that ENG-server Floyd and Vil have a different relationship than JPN-server Floyd and Vil, or if it was a continuity error.)
Above: Rook's voice actor Itokawa Yuujirou tries to guess his character's nickname for Floyd on ENG-server, after being told it begins with the letter "S".
Rook refers to Floyd as Monsieur 愉快犯, which is a word that doesn’t seem to exist in English. The definition according to weblio.jp is “A crime whose purpose is to cause a public commotion for the sheer pleasure in the commotion.”
I found fan translations such as “Monsieur Kills for Thrills” and “Monsieur Joyous Offender”, and his ENG-server nickname for Floyd is “Monsieur Spontane”, which is also accurate.
Rook’s nickname for Jade, “Monsieur 計画犯”, matches Floyd's in the original Japanese, but rather than “joyous crime”, Jade’s means “predetermined/deliberate crime”. Floyd and Jade are two of several characters that Rook does not have a french-equivalent name for on JPN server.
Floyd’s academic achievements are as unpredictable as his moods, and he will go from 100% on one test to 0 points on the next. Jade calls him an “eccentric genius”, saying that “he can pull off spells that amaze his teachers, and sometimes he produces so little that they chastise him in frustration”.
He is also a poor flyer and well aware of it, but despite the trouble he had learning how to walk on land (less than two years ago) he is now an accomplished dancer.
Floyd seems to suffer a surprising amount of corporeal punishment. He is forced to stand in line for a tart for hours, early in the morning, as punishment for eating strawberries meant for an important Mostro Lounge event (ref: Trey vignette).
Azul makes him sit in seiza (a formal sitting position that is killer on your legs) for hours as punishment (ref: ruggie vignette), and he is bodily wrung out of his eel form’s natural mucus in order to craft a moisturizer for Vil, leaving him unable to walk and in physical pain, due to no fault of his own (ref: azul vignette). We learn from Jade that drying up is fatal to mermaids.
Despite his unpredictable nature, dislike of rules and being told what to do, Floyd is surprisingly pliable when being instructed by Azul. He spends the entirety of his dorm uniform vignette going from one person to another in an effort to achieve a goal that Azul set for him, ultimately trading a priceless jewel from Kalim’s storage room (described as being similar to the giant ruby seen in the beginning of Disney’s animated Aladdin movie) to Sam in exchange for the rights to sell the Mystery Shop’s popular Mystery Drink at Mostro Lounge, which Azul had asked him to acquire.
Jade later tells him to never admit to Azul what it was that he traded for the rights.
Floyd seems to slip into his eel form often, doing so both during halloween and the Vargas Camp event. Azul has said that Floyd will occasionally forget to drink the potion that keeps them in human form and will only notice after sprouting fins.
While Floyd has a profound dislike of all the mushrooms that Jade will bring into the dorm, it is unclear if he dislikes them because Jade keeps bringing home so many (an issue that concerns Azul as well), or if Jade’s hobby is merely aggravating a pre-existing displeasure.
Floyd’s love of parkour came from his enjoyment of using sunken ships as obstacle courses when in his eel form, the sport’s lack of rules and being “like swimming on land”. He relates a time he overslept and parkour’d his way into class through a window, much to the teacher’s disapproval.
Floyd’s room is stocked with what appears to be sweets, and we learn that they are snacks that he eats when he gets hungry late at night. Peppermint candy, melon-soda flavored gummies and almond biscotti have all at one time or another been his favorite snacks. He says that rather than flavors, he enjoy things that are fun to chew and that are only available on land.
He says his favorite food is takoyaki because he never gets tired of it, which is very unusual for Floyd. Basic takoyaki generally consists of green onion, ginger and octopus, cooked in batter in a special griddle that enables its round shape. (takoyaki has been consistently translated as “corndogs” on ENG-server so I am fascinated to see how this conversation in his birthday vignette is to be handled in the future)
Takoyaki parties are a common thing in Japan, and Floyd explains that he, Jade and other members of the dorm had enjoyed a takoyaki party where they experimented with weirder and weirder ingredients in a competition to see who would eat the most unpleasant combination (“We started with shrimp and cheese, then sausage and oysters…tomatoes, broccoli, strawberries and cream, chocolate, anchovies, potato salad, konjac potatoes…)
When Azul warned them against wasting food, they ate it all.
Floyd’s unique magic “Bind the Heart” (Japanese: Entwining Tail), is the ability to deflect magical attacks. It is rather peculiar as it will only work if he is in mood for it, and can sometimes fly off in the wrong direction when he is not. It is a “deflecting” ability so the attacker’s magic is not “erased”, merely redirected, as we see in Book 3 when he deflects an attack that gets deflected onto Azul’s safe.
When Azul borrows this ability in Book 4, however, Jamil’s attack does not seem to bounce wildly off to anywhere at all, so it is possible that this defection can be controlled by the magic’s user. Floyd says in a homescreen line that when he first joined the basketball club he was told that his “passes were too strong” as he had trouble controlling their force, so this may be a problem for him in more than one area.
Floyd is uniquely easygoing about his unique magic, willingly trading it to Azul in exchange for a deeper voice in Book 4. When Jade comments that he would worry that Azul would never return his unique magic in a deal like that, Floyd says he does not particularly care about it being returned to him at all.
Some great artists for Floyd fan-art and more (SFW, no story spoilers)

hello! regarding this post - do you mean it should be extracted from criticism-swatters' heads, so they can't use it as a thought-terminating cliche? or that people should simply go back and study on their own? that it's developed into a common conversation-blocking so fans can dismiss (media) criticism as INHERENTLY NEGATIVE!!! instead of. naming it as just another form of analysis? criticism =/= being critical of something! of course. genuinely wondering btw. (also nice chocolate? blog theme. 'tis delicious to witness).
