The Competition (Preview)

Written for the @voltronfantasyzine

“I just don’t get it,” James squinted at him, “What’s so great about you?”

Keith had heard this a million times. It was getting old, “Nothing. I’m just a wimp who happened to know one of the instructors. Yes, I know,” he rolled his eyes.

James’ lip curled, “As much as I would love to believe that, it doesn’t add up. I should have beaten you in something by now if you were really leaning on nepotism. Unless….they’re inflating your grades,” he raised an eyebrow.

“Wouldn’t it be obvious if they were doing that? You see me when I take exams. You’d know if I was underperforming.”

That stumped James for a second, and his face scrunched in thought. Then he snapped his fingers, “With spells, sure. But we give potions to the teacher for grading, so I’ve never seen one of yours in action.”

He didn’t have the energy to keep arguing. He leaned his head back against the wall, “And?”

“And so I challenge you to a competition! We’ll both make a potion and see who’s is best.”

“Oh yeah? What potion do you think we should make? I already beat you at all of the ones in class.”

“First of all, that didn’t count because again, they were graded by the teachers. Second, we’ll make…uh….”

Fantasy zine preview!

“shania where is GOW update???”

This is the reason CHECK OUT @voltronfantasyzine bc I’m in it and so are several other AMAZING PEOPLE! And its free so everyone can enjoy it!

Preview:

“We can sneak you out.” His grip, loose in Keith’s hands moments ago, meets Keith’s tightness. “We can bring you to Altea so you do not have to succumb to the gallows.”

“Escaping to…Altea..” Keith tastes the words on his lips, awestruck. He can get out of here. He doesn’t have to serve the Galra anymore. Not witness anymore gruesome deaths, whether they be through slow burning or the draining of a witch’s magical essence. He can practice his abilities, become someone. Maybe, possibly help Lance and the Altean royals in saving the Galra people. Not all are bad. Just the ones holding the throne, demanding ruthless slaughter and an iron fist rather than compassion. To aid the people who, based off tales slaves returned from the Balmeran capital, smuggled out those they can in efforts to secretly undermine Zarkon’s authority.

But as hope blooms within Keith’s cold chest, a revelation hits him. One that leaves him sorrowful, but renews a different sense of ease.

“I…I can’t go with you.” He whispers, avoiding Lance’s pleading look.

“What? Why? Keith, you don’t want to stay here. This could be your only chance.” Lance reasons.

“I know. But there is someone who needs it more than me.”

Can’t decide if I want this with or without the paper texture. The paper overlay makes it a little lighter and gives it a slight glow…. thoughts?

Hello! With the first check-in passed, we’d like to get a list out in the next couple of weeks! We should be sending contributor forms for people to fill out their preferred method of credit soon. :)

hi! what kinds of ideas for merch will there be for this zine?

Hello! Since this is a digital zine, we’d like to have things like icons, maybe a wallpaper or two, or perhaps even a few page dolls! Whatever the participants who’re willing to do merch can contribute! Though we don’t have very many, so we might not be able to put out as much. :)

May I ask how many applications you had and how many artists/writers have been chosen?

We’ve received exactly 100 applications! We hope to have 15 writers and 35 artists, not including the mods who want to participate. :)

That’s the goal, we did run into a small complication with duplicate applications but I’m working on getting it fixed so that I can send out emails!

I’ll be making a post when all emails have been sent, so keep an eye out for that!

Hello there! You’re not bothering us, no worries! Right now we’re a little behind schedule. Some of us have been kind of busy, and writer apps are taking a bit longer to get through than anticipated- but we’re working to complete evaluations as quickly as we can!
