“Awwwe, you absolutely reek of curses! Lucky.” The Emperor before him had quite the curse set upon her! Only something Henry could see with those strange, elusive eyes of theirs.

Much like a looming cloud of smoke and fog, curses enveloped whoever was unfortunate enough to contract them like veils. It must have happened during the training session in the towers, right?

“Seems like a run-of-the-mill sapping curse. Eventually it would sap all your energy and you’d succumb to your own body slowly failing and withering away before your very eyes! A little too slow of a curse in my opinion, but I guess a slow demise can be fun? Mm, maybe not.”

Fast and effective was usually Henry’s kind of style, and this particular hex was simply much too slow to be impressive… or entertaining. A short wait time was one thing, an eternity was another–and days? That sure felt like an eternity.

“Here, I can remove it for you if you’d like! It’ll be a snap! Like a neck!”

Ah. A curse, was it? Well... she supposed that was one way to describe her, ah. Affliction.

Truth be told, Edelgard anticipated that something like that would become of her. Lysithea had been through much of the same things she had, and that was the apparent fate she anticipated awaiting her. Naturally, it would make sense for Edelgard to expect the same. Her constitution was already shifting in a direction she couldn’t control; what started as sickness from eating pastries she enjoyed before morphed into days of insatiable headaches, weariness, and bleached hair.

Hubert’s magic and Lysithea’s research could only do so much for her. That being said, Edelgard was content with how her life had gone at this point: she freed her home, her Fódlan, from its ancient shackles and her dreams were on the verge of realization. If the reaper came for her, she had no reason to fear him.

“I certainly welcome your efforts to try.” She doubted that Henry’s magic could really do anything about her crests, but they had been so eager to offer their aid that it felt wrong to refuse. “I do not believe there can be much done about this ‘curse’ you claim I bear, but... as long as there is no harm, I suppose.”

However, it cannot be denied that a ruler of steel cares for their people and their kingdom, and aims to always rule them with strength and with success.

It certainly would be Chrom’s luck to be chosen for a scour mission the moment he felt well enough to do so, wouldn’t it? Although, the Exalted Prince never found himself complaining wordlessly or otherwise once. In fact, it never even crossed his mind to begin with. But what did? How great it will be to get out of the castle.

It came as a relief to him, to have someone he at least knew the face of as a partner for this journey. Chrom didn’t know Edelgard very well personally, at least, not yet… but he was very willing to make this work. They sort of had to make it work, given that they would be out here for an entire 24-hour period…

They had only just started walking through the wildernesses of the area, and the sound of silence for a change was almost foreign. For everything going on in Askr… to find sudden peace by simply stepping into another place could leave one winded. Granted, they were now in a whole other time… but the whiplash still remained.

It wouldn’t last long, no… but they would have to blend in the best that they can for the sake of accurate information.

“Well, well met, Edelgard.” Chrom would be the one to break the silence. It might be a little late for this, but Chrom never was too smooth to begin with, was he. “It will be an honor to work with you, I’m sure.”

Edelgard had seen Chrom around the castle before. From what information she gathered through word of mouth and Hubert’s various investigations into the heroes summoned to Askr, the prince of Ylisse was in every aspect a hero from the way he carried himself to the mark upon his shoulder. She had heard it was a sign from the gods, a symbol binding Chrom to the task of protecting Ylisse and its people. She herself was familiar with such burdens, how fate could force unwitting people into pawns of the gods. 

Now was not the time to think of her own ambitions, however; they would wait for when she returned to Fódlan. The scour mission came first, and she had readily volunteered to take part. Not only would it benefit Edelgard to get a better lay of the land, but it also provided the bonus of escaping Hubert’s overprotective tendencies for a while.

She had just begun to enjoy the silence of their walk when Chrom’s voice broke it. Edelgard was startled initially as she straightened her spine in attention, but upon seeing it was only Chrom she allowed herself the luxury of relaxing.

“The pleasure is mine, Prince Chrom. I’m honored to be in the presence of a hero of your caliber.” There was a sincerity to her tone as she spoke to him, and a slight smile graced her lips. She continued striding forwards, but her eyes glanced in Chrom’s direction as acknowledgement towards his presence.

Chrom was polite enough to have broken the ice; therefore, Edelgard felt obliged to keep the conversation going. “Have you been on scour missions before for the Order of Heroes? I can’t help but notice how calm you seem. Surely traveling to unknown worlds would be an uncanny experience, considering how little experience we have with it in comparison to Prince Alfonse.”

And now, a short list of the names of a few of Edelgard’s various stuffed animals:

The man, the myth, the legend: Chuffles, an oversized tan bear with a big brown bow around his neck. He’s so big that Edelgard can comfortably sleep on him.

Princess Sparkles: red, glittery, with a translucent ribbon.  About the size of a lapdog.

Mr. Muffin, a unicorn given to her during her stay in the Holy Kingdom. The giver has been long forgotten by her.

Ruffinald von Stuffykins, a plush dog and Edelgard’s very first stuffed animal. Well loved and missing an eye.

Neddy, the Armored Bear Stuffy Byleth gifted her. It’s got its own little set of armor, d’awww.

Poe, a plush crow. It was a gift from Hubert.

Finally for this list because the mun got tired, Lady Purrsephone, a stuffed cat and her most recent addition to the stuffed animal family. Currently sleeps with her all the time.

Edelgard learned how to play piano from a very young age. While she doesn’t play as much during her academy days, after the war she picks it back up. On particularly late nights when her nightmares are extra persistent, you can hear something along the lines of this playing somewhere in the ballroom.

She’ll never play for a crowd, no, but if you’re married to her she just might.

Edelgard inherited her taste in tea from her mother. Bergamot was Lady Anselma’s favorite blend, and while she resided in the Empire she was often found drinking a cup with an infant Edelgard resting in her lap. Even when her mother relocated to the Holy Kingdom, assumed the name Patricia, and married King Lambert, Edelgard picked up drinking bergamot tea as a way to retain a connection with her mother despite seeing her less and less.

Even though Edelgard’s memories of her time in the kingdom have grown foggy, she still remembers drinking bergamot tea while waiting for her mother to fetch her for dinner... or for a certain young prince to invite her on an outing with him and his three friends.

Edelgard’s hair was not only bleached to white by the crest experiments, but it also became incredibly brittle and prone to breakage. Dyeing her hair to its original color would be too great a risk; not only would it further damage her hair, but the color wouldn’t stick to begin with. To combat this, Edelgard employs a variety of hair masks and conditioners to strengthen her hair and nourish it in its current state.

Said treatments can take up to three hours and involve a variety of ingredients, from argan and coconut oils to raw eggs, cognac, and brandy. Yes, this includes pre-timeskip. To this day, nobody knows how she managed to fit that into her schedule.

Due to the strain of her two crests on her body and immune system, Edelgard has developed a myriad of allergies over the years, including but not limited to: wheat, nuts, cheap metals, unfiltered tap water, and pollen. All gifts of food go through Hubert before reaching Edelgard so he can test them for not only poisons, but any allergens that could render the emperor ill.

If she does come in contact with one of her allergy triggers, Edelgard will break out into a rash and, on occasion, her eyelids will swell. She will then shut herself in her room for the rest of the day with a healer (usually Linhardt) in order to recover.
