Well, why not meet future you and the doctor? After all, if the doctor did first meet you in the future, then future him would help you out just like his future self did. Meaning, ask him to teach you how to use the device if the whole thing is a paradox.

Well that was... educational. Well, welcome to the wide world of adventuring! If not in profession then as a hobby. Maybe We'll be able to pass you a few things when you need them most. Of course, that's no excuse not to come prepared yourself; No telling when our connection might flicker. I think a bottle of water would be a good thing to always carry with you, just in case.

Experiment #2! We'll be using a large coil of rope and feeding it through the connection while unspooling it. That way we'll see if it's a matter of being able to fit through the aperture of your device or the overall volume of the object involved. Also potentially we can see if there's any sort of cooldown on how often we can send things through the device. SCIENCE!
