Jemma shrugs. “Honestly I don’t know. Children are supposed to be improved by being lied to and lead to believe in impossible things like Leporidae hiding colorful eggs around the yard and magical intruders leaving packages for them. Maybe it’s a religious thing, get them used to just accepting crazy ideas early, though when we grow up we all are expected to learn it’s not true so no that doesn’t even follow.”

“I’d rather believe in an impossible fat guy bringing me stuff if I was good than a very possible blue guy who’d kill you if you were bad,” Deke pointed out. “And lepoardye leaving eggs is weird unless they lay them.”

Typical. Spending time in, well, another time had messed with Deke’s fiscal awareness, and he’d been frustrated at the dramatic increase in price of everyday goods. The bills in his pocket had been enough for a prepackaged salad, a soft drink, and a rotisserie chicken, but not much else. He was still trying to stay off SHIELD’s radar after the self-sacrifice, wanting them to remember him as a selfless guy, not someone who would weasel his way out of trouble after making a dramatic show.

“Really‽” The bottom of the paper bag had split, dropping everything to the ground as he was halfway across the parking lot to the bus stop. “I’m trying to be environmentally conscious here!”

Emma had just arrived at the store. She slips on her jacket over her SHILD polo as she gets out of the car. As she does she notices a Lemmon rolling towards her feet and a gentaman who’s bag had busted. She picks it up and runs over to him. “Sir, can I help? Besides I think this belongs to you.”

“Thanks,” Deke said and put it in his jacket pocket. “I need one of those cloth reusable tote things, I guess.”

It’s no problem. I have one in my car if you like. Emma opens the hatch of her suv and pulls out a cloth bag. He can now see the SHIELD log on her shirt. She turns and hands him it.

I use them for my twins toys but it will work in a pitch she smiles

Deke caught a glimpse of the logo and tried not to react to it.  Had they found him already?  He wasn’t exactly trying to hide, but that was fast.  “Thanks.  Mind if I hang onto this for a while?  I mean, I still have to get home.  I’m not drinking Coke under a bridge,” he said with a nervous laugh.

“Not at all. You can have that one.” She notices how nervous he seems. “Sorry, do I know you? I know that’s a strange question. My husband is kind of famous and well I’ve met some of his friends before. Just thinking you might be one of them. I’m Emma Mackie.”

“No offense, but I’m more than kind of famous, so you probably know me from me being a big deal in the tech world,” Deke said before realizing his shopping didn’t exactly testify to that.

So I think it was [writer] DJ Doyle that pitched a post-credits mini-scene that I was very sad that we didn’t get to shoot, but we talked a lot about it, which was that: Somebody would walk into a S.H.I.E.L.D. office and there’d be the back of a chair, and it would spin around, and it was me with an eye patch… I don’t know if Nick Fury is in this timeline or not. I think [Deke] can still see fine, but it’s just about a power and cool thing.
