It’s a monsoon out there! Stay dry, Hokies! ☔️ (at Blacksburg, Virginia)

What’s it take to build the world’s smartest solar home? Well, a 100-ton crane for one. As for the rest, ask the dozens of @vtcaus and @virginia.tech engineering students and faculty who are building the aptly-named FutureHAUS. The interdisciplinary team is erecting the floor, walls, roof, and solar panels of the home today, bringing together all the FutureHAUS components for the first time. The Virginia Tech team will compete in Dubai in November as the only U.S. team in the Solar Decathlon Middle East – an international collegiate competition to build the world’s smartest solar home. Nothing quite says “I love what I study” like the moon-patched denim jacket graduating senior Sapna Rao has been known to wear. This aerospace engineering soon-to-be #HokieGrad from Centreville, Virginia is so enthusiastic about space travel, she’s spent some of her time at @virginia.tech lobbying in the realm of space policy through Virginia Tech’s chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS at Virginia Tech). It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that Rao was so enthusiastic about the February 2018 launch of @spacex Falcon Heavy rocket, she traveled with friends down to Cape Canaveral, Florida to witness the launch in person. “Seeing the launch made me think of how I can impact the field of aerospace engineering,” Rao said. “I’ve already gotten so many other students interested in the space travel and craft design, so now I’m thinking ahead. I want to use all the skills I’ve gained to advance the field and perhaps create a company of my own.” In the meantime, Rao is off to @lockheedmartin to work with the @nasa NextSTEP program, and has her sights set on the stars. Congratulations to Sapna and the 1,410 other engineering #Hokies graduating today! (at Virginia Tech)
This soon-to-be #HokieGrad is headed to an internship at @teslamotors after graduation — making it her second time working at an @elonmusk-led company. Read Genevieve Gural’s @virginia.tech story at bit.ly/Gural2018 (at Virginia Tech)
This #HokieGrad is aiming high — like, beyond Earth’s orbit high. Jessica Goeringer, a graduating senior from Springfield, Virginia who studied aerospace engineering, will be working at @ulalaunch after crossing the graduation stage in a few days. She’s prepped for this role in large part thanks to the hands-on experience she had at @virginia.tech through the @vtmotorsportssae team and internships at @generalelectric Aviation, Pratt And Whitney, and United Launch Alliance. In fact, it was the final internship that capped all her previous experiences and that, she said, “reinforced that working on spacecraft is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” She’s headed back to United Launch Alliance soon, and already has major aspirations for her future. “Down the line, I want to be in charge of launch operations,” Goeringer said. We can’t wait to see this #Hokie living out that dream. Congratulations to Jessica and the 1,410 other engineering Hokies graduating in just a few short days! (at Virginia Tech)
Good luck wishes from @vtdeanross with exams! Summer break is almost here ☀️ (at Virginia Tech)
Welcome to the @virginia.tech Ware Lab, Ut Prosim Society! We’re excited to show some of our most engaged #Hokie alumni around this space, which is enabled by philanthropic support like theirs. (at Virginia Tech)
Well, this is a welcome sight. 🌸 (at Virginia Tech)

Over 100 industrial and systems engineering students spent their Saturday at the 2018 Torgersen Leadership Summit, where they heard from influential industry leaders, like alumna Betty Chao, president and CEO at Westich International, Inc. The summit provides students and alumni an opportunity to further themselves as leaders through networking, interactive workshops, and discussion panels to ultimately gain insight into practical applications. It’s a cool 20 degrees out there, #Hokies. Bundle up before you cross the Drillfield! (at Virginia Tech College of Engineering)
